Halloween passed safely in Fethard but it obviously no longer is a child only celebration. With this year’s event spanning over the whole weekend it was certainly the case that more adults were dressed up for ‘Fun & Frolics’ than children were for ‘Trick or Treat’. However, it was all great fun and great crack. Congratulations to all who made the effort to make the weekend special and in particular, all the visiting ‘witches’ who came to Fethard over the weekend!

Fethard GAA Club News
The annual Cumann na Sean Gael awards were held last Sunday in the Dome at Semple Stadium. On this, the 125th year of the Gaelic Athletic Association, awards were presented to Archbishop Dermot Clifford, honoured as Patron of the Association; Michael Hogan (Grangemockler) nephew of Michael Hogan who was shot on Bloody Sunday in Croke Park (1922); Pat Walsh (Carrick-on-Suir) nephew of Maurice Davin one of the founders of the Association in Hayes Hotel Thurles on 1st November 1884.

It was great to see one of our own, Tony Newport, honoured among such distinguished guests for his services to the Gaelic Association both as a player, historian, and contributor to Fethard club and press over the last 50 years. We join in congratulating Tony who accepted his award from Christy Cooney, president of the Gaelic Athletic Association, who took out time from his busy schedule to attend the award ceremony. Tony joins the other ten recipients from Fethard club since its inauguration back in 2002. Again on behalf of club and supporters, congratulations!

Best of luck to our current custodian, Paul Fitzgerald, in his quest for a second Railway Cup Medal when Munster take on Ulster in the Interprovincial Football Championship Final to be played at Ruislip, London, this weekend.

We offer our sincere condolences at this time to the family of Joe Fogarty (Congress Terrace) on their bereavement. Go ndeana Dhia trocaire ar an ainmeachta.

Brothers win at D-rift Championships

Fethard brothers John and Paul McCarthy who both took home Irish Championship cups in the D-rift 09 Championship

On Sunday, 18th October, Fethard brothers John and Paul McCarthy both took home Irish Championship cups as the winners of the pro series and novice series in the D-rift 09 Championship. John finished in 3rd place in the event on the day in his Barry’s Motorsport sponsored BMW M3 and on overall points won the pro series of the championship.

Paul, driving the same car, finished in first place on the day event and also took home the trophy for first place in the novice championship. Both brothers put on a great show for everyone at the event in one of the only non-turbo cars in the series, competing with cars up to twice the power.

Drift racing is one of the most popular motor sports in Ireland today. It began in Japan as the fastest way of getting downhill on mountain roads without using brakes, which means that the car is more often than not travelling sideways! For more information on this sport, check out www.d-rift.ie

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds making their way through Fethard's North Gate at the Opening Meet held on Bank Holiday Monday
Tipperary Foxhounds making their way through Fethard's North Gate at the Opening Meet held on Bank Holiday Monday

A very large crowd of well-wishers and supporters turned out for the opening meet of Tipperary Foxhounds in Fethard on the Bank Holiday Monday. Following the dispensing of the traditional ‘Stirrup Cup’ by Annette and her staff, Huntsman Derry Donegan, with whipper-in Sam Staniland, led off the field from McCarthy’s Orchard.

Ninety-four mounted followers were tallied leaving for Rocklow. Joined by a few late-comers on the Rocklow Road the field totalled just over one-hundred at the first draw. A beautiful day weather-wise provided a typical opening meet day hunting. Short, sharp runs provided a much needed early season pipe-opener for horses and riders. First fox from Rocklow ran down through McCarthy’s bog, crossed the Fethard / Moyglass road and to ground just behind Daly’s fuel depot.

Finding again in Rocklow they ran down again across the Moyglass road and to ground at Ballybough. Rathvin was blank. A small circle was had from Murdoch’s fort, Power’s wood but proved blank. Moving to Ardsallagh they found at the lodge. Hunting around the covert they ran towards the Coolmoyne ball alley road and caught him on top near Ardsallagh back entrance. The Tipps had finished a most successful autumn hunting at Orchardstown on the previous Saturday, 24th October. Hounds were out on forty mornings accounting for twenty brace, twelve-and-a half brace they caught on top.

From Knockgraffon, on Wednesday 28th October, foxes were none too plentiful and hard to find. First draw, at Mr Joe Owens, did hold a brace. First one, however, quickly got to ground, the second being lost after a short circle. Knockgraffon Moate, The sandpit and River Suir bank covert all proved blank as, most surprisingly, did Dr. McCarthy’s plantation. Moving on to Mr Michael Kelly’s hounds found here. After a short circle of the kale they marked to ground in a hedgerow. Here, unfortunately, as huntsman, Derry Donegan, having dismounted received a severe kick from his horse. Whipper-in, Sam Staniland, carried the horn for the rest of the day which finished with a fast twenty-five minutes from close to the New Inn by-pass motorway to beyond Rosemary Clifford’s.

Sam again carried the horn at the children’s meet at Grove. The huge turn-out of kids of all ages enjoyed the afternoons hunting around the estate. Another large field turned out at Lisronagh on Saturday. From Quinlan’s hounds ran to the Baptistgrange road, crossed briefly into Lakefield, re-crossed the road and crossed, what is known to generations of the travelling community as, the ‘green road to the old railway line’ at Rathcanty. They finished a very good day with two circles from Ballyhohan, and around Orchardstown marking to ground on both occasions. Derry, we are glad to report, is making good progress from the two broken ribs he suffered in the unfortunate mishap. He will be out of action for a few weeks. In the meantime Sam is doing an excellent job.

With the White Heathers
The opening meet of the Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers at Drangan, on Sunday last, proved somewhat of a disappointing day for the large number of followers who turned out. A fox found in Mr Fred Daly’s ran over the Priestown road to the top of Mullally’s hill where they lost him. Despite Donie’s best efforts this fox turned out to be the only find of the day. However, such is hunting. The atrocious heavy rain of Saturday night, Sunday morning plus the fact that the country had been heavily shot-over early in the day ensured that every self-respecting fox had sought refuge underground. The Ballyluskey White Heathers will meet on Sunday next, in Cloneen at 11am.

The November members and friends monthly draw was held on Tuesday last, November 3rd (results were not available at time of going to print). Winners in the previous months draw were: First Prize (€200) won by Keith Bergin, Kilbragh and Second Prize (€100) by Rita Kelly, Fethard.

Fethard Rugby Club News
The J3s served up a brilliant game of rugby against Clanwillian in the Gleeson League on Saturday night last at home. This panel has grown steadily over the last number of weeks with great enthusiasm in the squad. The set pieces had been causing some problems but great work during training saw John Smullen and Richie Horan propping up the scrum really steady and in the lineout, Nigel O'Connell's accurate throwing consistently found our jumpers Nicko Hynes and Joey Kelly, overall a big improvement in our set pieces.

Fethard started very well and were soon awarded a penalty which Tommy Gahan duly converted. Brian McCormack and Tom Anglim posed a constant threat in the pack and carried the ball forward to great effect. Clan were also awarded a penalty which was converted to tie the game, but constant Fethard pressure yielded another penalty which Tommy Gahan again converted to leave the half time score 6-3.
Tommy had to leave the pitch at this stage following a clash of heads and this lead to the introduction of P.J. Morrissey for his first game of rugby.

In the second half Clan came back to level the score but Fethard rallied again and with John Fitzgerald, Mush Dwyer and Kenny Brown making huge contributions, Fethard were awarded their third penalty which Declan Doyle put between the posts.

The pressure was on to hold out for the last ten minutes and some great tackling by Declan Curran, Shane Kenny and Alan O'Conner left no way through but having tried everything to breach the Fethard defence the Clan out-half took his chance and took a drop-goal leaving the score 9-9.

The last few minutes saw Colm Blackmore and David Kelly get Fethard into the Clan 22 and some great Fethard rucking saw Clan infringe and a penalty was awarded, Declan Doyle struck it well but the wind brought it across the posts, so a great game ended 9-9. This Fethard team with 90% of the players new to the game of rugby is showing consistent improvement and they can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence. Training every Tuesday and Friday night at 8pm.

Our Christmas Party will be held on Saturday night 19th December in the Ballroom, numbers strictly limited to two hundred, so reserve your ticket now at €35 each. Full details later.

Fethard and Killusty Community Games
We would like to remind everyone that the annual general meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Games takes place in the Tirry Community Centre on Thursday 12th November at 8pm.
As stated last week the games were revived in 1985 and children of some of the then competitors are now participating. We are very lucky that Mr Tom Butler, Coolanure, who was responsible for setting up the games in Fethard around 1970, is one of our county patrons and still available with help and advice. Miceál McCormack who played a big role in the games over the years is still doing tremendous work for the youth especially in the field of athletics. Sean Devaney, who was mainly responsible for the revival of rugby in the parish after a lapse of over 70 years, has helped the club go from strength to strength. The current high success results in no small way from the efforts of Sean and the community games.

The handball alley is currently undergoing painting and decorating. Two of our members, Joe Keane and Jim O’Meara, who had many a good game there are hopeful that handball may return to the games.
We would appreciate the support of parents, club coaches, teachers and anyone interested in sport and the welfare of children to come along to our AGM on 12th November.
