Fethard Macra Notes
Our Fethard team of Pat Murphy, Liam Cleary, David Ryan and John McCormack took part in the recent club 'question time' in Waterford on Saturday, February 19. The Fethard and Dundrum teams were the two to graduate from the South Tipperary rounds, which were held in Grangemockler previously. Sadly, on the night the team was not placed amongst the winners in the regional round in Waterford but well done to all the lads for taking part.

Things are hotting up in drama circles as those involved in this years play are busily preparing under the directions of producer, Michael Manley. The play will be staged as part of the Munster drama semi finals, which this year will be held in the Abymill Theatre, Fethard, on March 19 and 20, with three plays on each night from different clubs around the province.

Keep 'Holy Thursday', April 21, free in your diaries as Fethard Macra will hold a great night of entertainment in Cloneen Sports and Social Club with music by the 'Loose Cannons'. This promises to be a great nights craic.

We offer our congratulations to John Tobin of the Slievenamon Macra club based in Grangemockler who recently was awarded a scholarship from UCD to study abroad. He has chosen to go to the U.S. to study the food industry there.

For more on Fethard Macra or to become a member phone our chairperson, David Ryan on 087 9454384.

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds attracted the largest field of the season of one-hundred-and-eleven mounted followers to their meet at Ballinahinch on Thursday last. Great to see the support for hunting is still so strong in Tipperary. From Camas Stud they hunted down to Ballinahinch Castle and to ground on the banks of the Suir. Kelly's proved blank. Crossing the road they had a very fast run up towards the Main Road where he got to ground. Drawing on they quickly found again and had two good right-handed circles through Dwyer's again marking to ground near where they found.

Moving on to Thompson's they found again and hunted to Lasna Wood. They were hunting strongly here when unfortunately the intervention of fresh foxes caused hounds to split. While no great points were achieved on Thursday the hunting they had was fast and furious with plenty of jumping and most horses having more than enough by the days end and many muddied coats. Some visitors greatly enjoyed the day, one lady taking on Tipperary banks for the first time, bringing up the rear in her own good time, was heard to say, "If I knew what they were like, I would not have come".

Tipperary Foxhound's Children's meet at Kilcooley on Sunday next marks the end of the 2010-11 season. All followers and readers of the column will join in thanking Tipperary huntsman, Derry Donegan, for the great sport shown during the season. Many excellent runs, especially since Christmas, have been enjoyed. Derry says the hounds will be even better next season.

Whipper-In, Sam Staniland, leaves the Tipps at the end of the season. We wish him the best of luck in the future as he seeks fresh fields and pastures new to conquer as he furthers his hunting career. We hope he carries many happy memories of his term with the Tipperary Foxhounds.

With the White Heathers
From Ballylusky on Sunday hounds first found behind Nash's. They hunted back to the Ballylusky – Killenaule Road above Clancy's. Here occurred one of hunting's mysteries which occasionally happen. Hounds were hunting in view to a hedgegrow, here Charlie just vanished. The fox did not go through the hedge and just could not be located. On to Whelan's they found in the Plantation on the right, following a circle from here they crossed the road to the plantation on the other side. This fellow proved a real dodger.

Hounds stuck well to their task in not too good scenting conditions. Crossing and re-crossing the road they eventually forced him away towards Carey's. Scent had improved and crossing the Crohane – Drangan Road at Noonan's they hunted up through Moonverrin and lost him on the road to the Two Trees Cross just above the sawmills. While the first section of that run was slow hounds hunted this fox for over an hour before home was blown at 4pm. The White Heather Harriers have a Lawn Meet next Sunday at Orchardstown House at 11am

Fethard Tidy Towns
The next meeting of Fethard Tidy Towns will take place on Tuesday, March 8, in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm. All are welcome. The committee are also looking for volunteers to help with picking up litter on Sunday mornings. Please contact Joe Keane, Tel: 6131719, or any of the committee members for further details.

Mr Kevin Collins will make a return visit to Fethard at the annual general meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council on Tuesday, March 15, in the Tirry Centre, and will give a very interesting talk and presentation on his Wildlife Survey in Fethard, featuring the river Clashawley. The presentation will take place following the AGM, which starts at 8.30pm. All are welcome.

Fethard U21s beaten by narrowest of margins

Our U21s were beaten by a single point in the South semi-final on Saturday, February 26. The final score was 1-6 to 1-5. This was a disappointing result in a fixture that was well within our grasp against Mullinahone, the experienced South Champions.

Looking the stronger team at first Mullinahone failed to register a score in the first quarter. The teams exchanged missed opportunities until a Cathal Hurley free in the eight minute opened the account for Fethard. More wides followed for both teams until Mullinahone settled and kicked 3 points without reply to leave the score 0-3 to 0-1 after twenty minutes. Fethard then rallied and points from Aaron O'Donovan (22 mins) and Dylan Fitzgerald (27 mins) ensured Fethard were level by half-time.

In the second half, a Frankie O'Donovan and Eoin Fitzgerald move led to a point kicked by Fitzgerald. Mullinahone kept on the pressure and their persistence paid off after ten minutes when confusion in the Fethard full back line allowed Mullinahone a well finished goal.
Competition was fierce at this point and the score remained at 1-3 to 0-4 points for the following five minutes. Mullinahone were then awarded a penalty and a chance to put the game beyond Fethard's reach but this was stopped by goalkeeper, J.P. McGrath who made a fine save. However, Mullinahone were rewarded with a point from the rebound.

The Fethard team then dug deep and a move involving Aaron O'Donovan and Tom O'Connell led to a penalty which was slotted home expertly by Cathal Hurley. This set up an exciting final ten minutes with the teams tied at 1-4 each. Mullinahone's experience at this grade then began to tell and they scored two points. Fethard came back with a Frankie O'Donovan point before the final whistle leaving Mullinahone with a one point victory. Best of luck to Mullinahone in the South Final.
This young Fethard team can be proud of themselves as they put up a great fight to a much older and more experienced Mullinahone side. With the majority of this team eligible for minor this year, we hope to see success in the year ahead.

Team: J.P. McGrath, G. Maher, E. Dillon, K. O'Connell, B. Delahunty, G. Fitzgerald, C. O'Meara, D. Fitzgerald (0-1), T. O'Connell, E. Fitzgerald (0-1), C. Hurley (1-1 pen/free), C. Ryan, F. O'Donovan (0-1), A. O'Donovan (0-1), C. Sheehan. Sub used was T. Sheehan for C. Ryan (22 mins). Substitutes were: Tommy Sheehan, Jerome Ahearne, Matthew Fitzgerald, Johnny Fleming and Joe Fogarty.

The club would like to thank Tommy, Buddy and Jamie for their hard work with this years U21 team. In a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract volunteers, we are lucky to have the three lads whose experience and dedication is invaluable. Go raibh maith agaibh.

Juvenile training nights for U16s and Minors are Monday and Thursday at 8pm. U14s Monday and Thursday at 6.30pm; and P12s on Wednesday at 7pm. U6, U8, U10s will start back training on Saturday, March 12, at 11am. All newcomers welcome.

Our U16s play their first football fixture on Saturday, March 12, in Fethard against Ballingarry at 4pm.
Our Juvenile Club church gate collection will take place the weekend of March 19 and 20, please give your support.

Cúl Camp bookings are now being taken, to reserve a place, please text your child's name, age and contact number to our Juvenile secretary, on Tel: 086 8963925.

Michael O'Mahoney was been elected the Juvenile vice-chairman at our last meeting and we take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome Michael.

Our GAA Lotto numbers drawn this week were: 4, 10, 14 and 27. There was no Jackpot winner or match three winner. The following five tickets drawn won €30 each: Michael Clarke, Merry's Clonmel; Tom Kearney, Killusty; Josie Fitzgerald, Kiltinan; Anne Butler, Main Street; and Stephen O'Donnell, Derryluskin. The €50 Lucky Dip winner was: Nellie Ryan, 46 St Patrick's Place. Our thanks to Clonmel Oil for sponsoring the printing of the Lotto Tickets.

We are appealing to all club players to please return any club jerseys as soon as possible. We are missing a number of jerseys which has resulted in us not having complete sets.

Our sincerest condolences to the family of Willie Crean, a past player. Féadfaidh Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.

Juvenile Rugby News
Fethard's U7s played an energetic Cashel team in a game of Leprechaun rugby with T.J Murphy, Charlie Cummins and Padraig O'Dwyer all showing great speed and agility to each score tries. James McCormack came on and picked up loose balls for Ben Ruttle and Connor Neville who worked well together with their passing and looping resulting in a try. Their second game of rugby was full contact and Fethard acquitted themselves well against a fine Kilfeacle side.

U8 team of Tom Hayden, Oisín Smullen, Shane Neville, Eoin O'Dwyer, Robert Wall, Connor Walsh, Eabha Fitzgerald, Joshua Rowan, Sean O'Dwyer and Oleg Shabza met with two well tuned sides in Cashel and Kilfeacle and had tough games. Cashel in particular should be commended for having a great team that worked well together and Fethard will learn the importance of passing and tackling from this game. Oleg Shabzat played a fine first game for Fethard.

Thanks once again to all the mothers who provided wonderful food for the teams and visiting families.

Our under 12s also played two very good teams. Cashel won the first game with a very good all round display of rugby. Fethard had a bit of soul searching to do as this was a well below par performance. The second game was a far better game with some good performances against a very good Kilfeacle side, with the visitors just getting the better of Fethard by one score.
