Fethard clean-up underway

Fethard Tidy Towns committee would like to thank all who helped in any way so far in litter picking and cleaning along the river bank from the ballroom to Abymill bridge. As this is a part of ‘National Spring Cleanup’ month we ask you to come along and help get Fethard town and area litter free. When you bring your bottles or cans to the bottle bank please put them in the container and don’t expect someone else to put them in for you
Litter picking takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30 and town pick on Saturday and Sunday so take a bit of pride in your area and keep a lookout for the litterbugs and illegal dumpers. Please come along, young and old, all are welcome.
Fethard & District Rugby Club AGM
The AGM of Fethard and District Rugby Club and Co. Ltd. will be held on Thursday 6th May in the Abymill, Fethard at 8pm.
Bric-a-Brac Sale
A ‘Bric-a-Brac’ sale and raffle will take place at the Town Hall, Fethard, in aid of the Presentation Sisters' Mission in Zimbabwe and the Senior Citizens Club, Fethard, on Saturday 24th April from 10am to 3pm. Bargains galore at giveaway prices.

Triduum to Our Mother of Good Counsel
A Triduum to Our Mother of Good Counsel will take place at The Augustinian Abbey, Fethard, starting on Friday 23rd April with Mass at 7:30pm. Vigil Mass on Saturday 24th April at 7.30pm. Sunday morning Mass at 9.30am and 11:30am

Monday 26th April is the feast of Our Mother of Good Counsel, when Fr. Denis Mason OSA will be our guest speaker at a Concelebrated Mass held at 7:30pm.
Trip to Kilcooley Abbey

More than forty people braved the elements — glorious spring sunshine with little or no volcanic ash — to visit Kilcooley Abbey on a trip organised by Fethard Historical Society on Sunday 18th April.
Liam Noonan, local historian, was the guide for the walk. He had arranged for the group to visit the local Church of Ireland, built in 1829, where everyone was greeted individually by Rev Cruikshank. Liam then led the group across a small road that is believed to be one of the last stretches of the medieval route between Cashel and Kilkenny, before we entered the Palatine graveyard. From there we visited the Abbey itself to see that most amazing sight of the tomb with the twelve apostles and the wall that has a carved crucifix, various coats of arms, St Christopher, although now forgotten, still carrying Jesus on his shoulders. Lower down on this wonderful wall is a carved mermaid with her mirror accompanied by two fish. Much of the carving was done by the O'Tunney brothers who achieved fame for their work in Jerpoint Abbey. The examples on the wall here which are somewhat protected from harsh winds and rain, are stunning to see.

The Abbey is well worth a visit not alone for the carvings and the historical interest but the whole setting is very appealing. We then went to see the lake before returning to the car park for a nice surprise of tea and biscuits. Most people headed for home but a few decided to accompany Liam to Grange Village, situated on the hills above Kilcooley, where he led the group to see the old ice house that served the estate. This was then followed by an old fashioned but welcome visit to the local hostelry.

A special thanks to Liam Noonan for his generous time and effort and for imparting in an easy fashion a thorough historical knowledge of the place. It was a great trip and if you are in that neck of the woods instead of up in the sky, go and visit the Abbey for you won’t be disappointed.

Fethard GAA Club News
In the Intermediate South Hurling Championship round-one game we drew with Moyle Rovers on a scoreline of 0-12 each. The Fethard team was as follows: J.P. McGrath, Arron Conran, Michael Aherne, Michael Carroll, John Leahy, Aiden Lonergan, Jamie McCormack, Eoin O’Connell, Dean Tobin 0-1, Tomas Keane 0-1, Kenneth O’Donnell 0-2, Alan O’Connor, Adrian Lawrence, Eoin Doyle, Colin Allen 0-5 (5f), Chris Sheehan 0-1, and Declan Doyle.
In the round-three Minor B Football game the score was Fethard 2-11, Carrick Swans 3-4.
The South Senior Football game against Clonmel Og is due to be played this weekend, possibly on Saturday, also the Minor Football round-four game against Kilsheelan/Kilcash. Check newspaper for fixture details.
Our promoters of the Tipperary County Draw are on the road and we ask you to please support your local club by purchasing a ticket which costs €100 for one year.

Community Council Meeting
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 27th April at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre.
Free Psoriasis Clinic
A specialist psoriasis nurse will attend O'Sullivan Pharmacy on Thursday morning 29th April. If anybody has any concerns about this skin condition please feel free to talk to the nurse on this Thursday morning. She will advise on best ways to help clear the condition and keep it at bay.

Fethard Bridge Club
On 14 April we played the second round of the Club Championship and the results were: 1st Gross, Frances Burke and Breda Walsh; 2nd Gross, Carmel Condon and Brendan Kenny; 1st Nett, Alice Quinn and Berney Myles; 2nd Nett, Rita Kane and Kay St. John.

Old friends meet up after fifty years

During the past week, Michael Kelly from Ballingarry was passing through Fethard and dropped into Burkes Bridge Bar for a pint. After chatting with the bartender, Miceál McCormack, he asked if Tom McCormack was any relation. He then went on to tell of the late Tom’s goalkeeping exploits in the fifties and the enjoyment watching the skill that he displayed.
He then enquired about Jim McCormack and went on to tell of the mighty duels Jim had with Paddy Kenny in the various tournaments of the early fifties that were held in what he called the Barrack Field.
“God”, he said, “I haven’t seen that man since we were gossoons working on the building of the houses in St Patrick’s Place in the fifties."
Miceál made a quick phone call and the brave Jim duly appeared. Both apparently delighted, they just stood looking at one another before having a pint together again after 58 years. They then recounted all the old times and stories from their youth.
A chance meeting, that ended shortly afterwards when they both left in different directions, maybe never to meet again.
Fethard Athletic Club Notes
On Friday evening last the club went back to winning ways at the indoors at Nenagh when Derek Zulu had a double win in the 60mtr and long-jump. Veteran Miceál McCormack made a comeback from injury and had three second-place results in the 60 mtr, 2000 metre walk, and the long-jump.
The previous week Derek had a wonder full win in the Munster long jump at the indoors and a silver in the 60 mtr.
Training continues on Monday and Thursday nights in the community field at the usual times and Kilkenny track on wed nights. We also have a ladies section who train for fun on the allotted nights and anyone who wants to come along are more than welcome - strictly fun.
On Monday 10th May our Athletic Development Fundraising night of nostalgia and music show will take place in the lovely Abymill Theatre where Denis Allen of ‘Limerick you’re a lady’ fame will front a lovely night of music and fun. Tickets are now on sale at Carroll’s Picture Framing, and Reflections hair dressing saloon on Main Street, also from committee members or ring Miceál on Tel: 087 9775096. More details nearer the date.
Died Recently
 The death has occurred on Monday 19th April of Mr Pat Murphy, Monroe, Fethard.
Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.
Ar ‘Cock’ ar Buile
This is one definitely for ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’ series.
While engaged in some landscape gardening work at Rathvin last week, Frank Fogarty was, believe it or not, violently attacked by of all creatures, a cock pheasant. Despite his best efforts to fend off the aggressive bird with a rake, it continued its attack undeterred.
Being off-season, Frank did not wish to ‘polish off’ his assailant so he took refuge in his car hoping it would desist. The bird then circled the car in fighting cock style continuing its attack.
Eventually with some assistance the bird was captured. Kept under cover for a while it seemed to cool down and when released it flew to the nearby ring-fort.
Frank says the bird is on a ‘yellow card’ and if he repeats the offensive it’s a straight ‘red’ and season for pheasants, in or out, it will be suspended — from a meat hook in the back kitchen.
Can anyone explain the pheasant’s unusual behaviour? Local gun club members and wild life experts are also baffled. However, it is strictly one for the birds!

Drumdeel Clean-up

On the evening of Tuesday 13th April a group of residents from the Drumdeel area near Lisronagh gathered at 6.30 at Sladagh Cross, to get their marching orders, yellow bags and gloves. Their mission was the annual cleanup of the roadsides and ditches of this beautiful neighbourhood. The event, which has been running for three years in this area, is part of the national An Taisce 'spring clean' event, and is assisted by South Tipperary County Council who supply bags and gloves, and who also collected the huge mound of bags and a collection of extraneous items, including this year a fridge/freezer, metal sheets and assorted car parts.
There was a great turnout with about thirty men, women and children literally ‘mucking in’. Refreshments including homemade cakes, coffee and tea were served afterwards at a 'street' party where the chat went on till after nightfall. The weather had been superb and all agreed that the event was a great success. One of the highlights of the evening was the social aspect; these days it can be very difficult to catch up with neighbours and even to meet them in the first place! The kids really enthuse about the event; it’s amazing where craic can be had!
Of course there is a darker side to this annual event which is reflected all over the country of Ireland, and that is the shameful fact that we remain one of, if not the dirtiest nations of the world who appear to believe that it's ok to dump bags of household rubbish in ditches rather than paying for their disposal. All too many of us fail to appreciate that cans and bottles can be recycled for free at local outlets.
It's a pity that the 'litter issue' is not more widely discussed. Dumping in beauty spots and widespread littering along our motorways and country roads is not a good look, either for us, or for tourism.
Burning of litter is a common but very serious matter, since it not only adds to our CO2 levels, but the burning of plastic emits toxic fumes which are carcinogenic. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to be seen as an anti-social behaviour; more a clever idea to avoid paying bin charges. However, when looking after ones health these days must be a top priority, such behaviour should be outlawed. Lets clean up our act!
Juvenile GAA Club

U10: Training is on Saturday at 11.30am (not 11am), your coaches are, Shay Coen, Eddie Crotty and Tom Anglim. We are looking for more U10 boys and girls to join. All information from our Secretary Ann, on 086 896 3925.
U12: Training at 6.45pm in GAA field on Monday and Thursday, unless otherwise informed. Coaches are Willie Morrissey, Willie Quigley and Jamie McCormack. If you are not receiving text from club, please let Ann know.
U14: There seems to be a couple of fixtures this week. Well done on your win against Fr. Sheehy's last Monday. Coaches are John Hurley and Tom Anglim.
U16: We have made it through to the semifinal, even though a couple of matches were awarded, it is definitely due to the fantastic display of teamwork and leadership shown by coaches, Jimmy O'Meara, Michael Quinlan and Steven O'Donnell.
Our Cul Camp takes place from Monday 23rd August to Friday 27th August. Registration closing date is 30th April 2010, after this date we cannot guarantee kit package on day of Cul Camp. You can register through the club or online at www.gaa.ie

We are delighted to announce that we are to facilitate this very important GAA code of Practise & Child Welfare Workshop. All those in our Club who have already taken a GAA coaching course, at any level will need to take this workshop in order to be fully accredited by the GAA. Well done and congratulations to Dylan Fitzgerald who represented his club and wore No. 10 jersey for the South in Clonoulty over the weekend in the inter-divisional under-16 hurling competition. The south made it into the shield final but were not lucky on the day.
