A very successful fundraiser to aid Cancer Research was held at the Village Inn, Moyglass on Saturday, February 18. The event was organised by Wendy Normile, Maurice Moloney, Gerry Aherne and Tom Lynch. Wendy unfortunately lost her brother Alan, to cancer at a young age last year. In his honour and paying thanks to hospice and all those who were so kind to Alan's family, Wendy decided to ride in the St. Patrick's Derby charity race at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival on Thursday, March 15.

The late Alan and his wife Lucy were horse trainers in Scotland, where Lucy still trains. Alan worked at Kim Bailey's when they achieved the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle double with Master Oats and Alderbrook. Alan was a mad Cheltenham enthusiast and it is fitting that Wendy is riding at this famous track to aid Cancer Research.

Wendy wishes to thank her committee and all those who helped to make the night such a huge success, especially those who bought tickets, sponsored items for the auction, purchased items, auctioneer Johnny Cummins, Sean Ryan who provided music and sound system and her friends who travelled from near and far to support the event.
Johnny O'Sullivan from Fermoy was the prize winner of a trip to Manchester United's home game against Aston Villa.

Wendy is preparing for her big day under the experienced eye of local trainer and Cheltenham specialist Mouse Morris. We all wish Wendy the best of luck in Cheltenham and will be cheering her up that famous hill in what will hopefully be a successful conclusion to her great effort. Donations can be made on line at www.justgiving.com/wendy-normile or sent direct to Wendy at Coolmore Stud, Fethard, Co. Tipperary.

Fethard Ladies Football Club
Starting this weekend, on Saturday, February 25, Fethard Ladies Football Club will be running a 'Last Man Standing' competition as a fund-raising initiative for the club. All entry forms for the competition must be submitted by Friday night to Willie O'Meara. Contact any member of the committee for further information. The more people that enter the bigger the pot is, so your support is greatly appreciated. Updates on the progress of the competition will be posted in the Fethard Notes and on our Fethard Ladies Football Facebook page.

Information Required
I am tracing some family history regarding my great great grand father who came to Australia in 1841. His name was Thomas English whom we believe was born about 1797 in Fethard. He left for Australia from Fethard and his 'reference' to be allowed to make the trip was given by an Andrew Walshe who was from Tullamaine Estate in Fethard. This information is contained on the shipping logs which we have here. Any information please to Matt English, Melbourne, Australia, email: matt.english1@gmail.com

Have you a general interest in wildlife in the South Tipperary area? Are you interested in learning more about birds of prey and the small mammal assemblages in the Tipperary area? Then you may be interested in attending a one-day workshop run in conjunction with Mammals in a Sustainable Environment (MISE), BirdWatch Ireland (BWI) and South Tipperary County Council (STCC).

MISE is a new project funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Ireland-Wales Programme 2007-2013 (INTERREG IVA). Labhaoise McKenna (STCC) will introduce the county’s Biodiversity Action Plan. John Lusby (BWI) will give a general talk on birds of prey and the small mammals that they consume as part of their diet. Peter Turner (WIT) will introduce the MISE project and will talk about small mammal detective methods utilizing DNA technology.
The talks will be followed by a number of interesting workshops including the identification of small mammals from bird of prey pellets, small mammal bait pots for non-invasive surveys and the demonstration of small mammal trapping.

This free day long event will run on Saturday April 21st at Hotel Minella, Clonmel from 10 am to 4 pm. Places are limited and booking is essential. For more information about MISE visit www.miseproject.ie or find us on Facebook. Please contact Denise O’Meara, MISE Project Officer, WIT domeara@wit.ie or phone 051 845514 for queries and bookings.

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds finish their 2011-12 season with their meet at Ballynonty on this Saturday, February 25. They had their best day last week from their meet at Ballydine on Thursday 16. From their first draw they ran from Ryan's towards the Ballydine road. Doing a u-turn here they ran back to cross the Ardmayle-Camas Road to the river Suir across from Clune. Circling again here they re-crossed the road toward where they found.
Hunting well they once again ran back over the road to the river where they marked to ground. Bawnmore held at least a brace. Again hunting well they had a good three minutes around the estate before getting a fox away. He ran towards Longfield but turning left they hunted up to Mr Tom Ryan's and to ground.

They finished a good day with a short run from the bog by the railway. Upwards of two-hundred-and-eighty teenagers of all ages enjoyed a really successful Hunt Ball at Hotel Minella showing once again that there is still very good support for hunting in Tipperary.

Tipperary Foxhounds will add a bye-day meet for the younger members with a children's meet at Kilcooley on Saturday, March 3.

With the White Heathers
The Ballyluskey White Heathers did not have the best of days from their meet at Cloneen on Sunday last. Finding quickly in the moor near the bridge at Garranguile they hunted towards Cloneen. Settling down to what looked like developing into a nice hunt the fox crossed the Fethard – Cloneen road and to ground at the Quarry near the village.

Drawing on towards Rathkenny car followers on the road at Boland's
and Rathkenny reported three foxes on foot before hounds arrived. Scent being not the best hounds could do very little with these, the same applied at the Ballinard side. Foxes in this area having been well hunted during the season are very alert and the sound of horn, hounds or even horses on the road are enough to send them away.

They finished a rather uneventful day drawing Carrigbawn Rock blank. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers finish their season with a Lawn Meet at Orchardstown House on Sunday next, February 26, at 11am. While the season ends this weekend the show must be kept on the road. This entails much work by very few. Hounds have to be fed, kennels kept clean, young puppies looked after, repair work and painting carried out and much more.

The White Heathers are currently promoting their annual draw. Books of three tickets at €5 are available from committee members. Winners of the February draw were: 1st Prize (€200), Ann Buckley, Drangan and 2nd Prize (€100), Pat Carroll, Fethard.
