Fethard Players will stage John B. Keane's, 'Year of the Hiker', in the Abymill Theatre from Friday, November 11, to Wednesday, November 16. The play is produced by Austy O'Flynn.

This is a beautiful play, with the gags and humour failing to mask the sense of hurt and futile loss of lives not fully lived. If only people could control how they acted - not let pride, shyness, cruel flippancy and jealousy muddle life up and store up future regrets.

The play, first produced in 1964, tells the peculiar story of a man nicknamed The Hiker who returns home looking for forgiveness from the family he walked out on 20 years ago.

The Hiker walked out 20 years ago, without a murmur since, and nobody seems to know why he went after eight years of marriage. Or do they? Hardest hit was Kate who withered in loneliness and shame, and Joe, who recalls the tender patience his father had for him and his devastation at being abandoned by his idol.

The Hiker's departure rocked the family and it was not just the embarrassment and anger that left such a mark. Towards the end of the play the Hiker points out the close proximity of love and hate.
Commencing at 8.15p. Tickets are €12 and booking is now open at O'Flynn's Menswear, Fethard. Tel: (052) 6131254 or 087 1604260.

The children of Holy Trinity N.S. had a very exciting lead in to Halloween this year. On Friday, October 28, the school was overrun with ghastly ghouls and ghosts, wicked and wonderful witches, skeletons and other scary fiends. The hall was a cauldron of suspense as the winners of the 'Don't Waste, Create' art competition were revealed.

This competition was organised as part of the schools efforts to Reduce Reuse and Recycle. We aim to achieve our first green flag by May 2012. Special thanks to all our artists and their parents for the high standard and their wonderful creativity, to Mrs Maher and Ms Looby for engaging in the very difficult task of judging the entries and to Mr MacAdhaimh and Holy Trinity students, Dean and Craig, for organising the competition.

Business & Tourism Group
The next meeting of Fethard Business & Tourism Group will take place on Monday, November 7, at 8pm in the Tirry Centre. In an effort to promote businesses in Fethard and to encourage people to shop here the first hour of this meeting will concentrate on these topics. We would like to invite every business owner in the Fethard area to attend. While we realise that business owners are busy looking after their own corner, so to speak, we believe that if a collective action is started everyone could benefit. Have a think about it. Come along on the Monday night and play your part.

Hunting News
On their penultimate autumn hunting meet, Tipperary Foxhounds had a very good morning at Tullamaine on Thursday, October 27.
A fox found in the main covert was not at all inclined to leave. Hounds hunting well, however, eventually had him away on the Coolmoyne side. Running through Martley's to the Kilbragh Coolmoyne crossroad they hunted left-handed to Kilbragh House and left again back to the Tullamaine covert. Through here after some good hound work they hunted up to Tullamaine motte and from here down to the screen by Coolmore Hayes's barn farm. Here they checked for the first time.
Setting out again they hunted a bit more slowly back to the motte where they lost him. This run lasted just over an hour during which hounds hunted with great cry and drive.

Fethard Scouts
Last weekend Fethard scouts attended the annual county fun weekend in Mount Melleray in very wet weather. However, this was overlooked with a good programme that included: night hike, tag rugby, obstacle course, 'wizards and warlocks' themed campfire, treasure trail and finishing with a 'scout's own'.

Self catering meant excellent fresh food cooked and served from Friday night including Sunday lunch supplied by a brilliant team of four, three from Fethard and one from Kilsheelan. All 135 attendees, in spite of poor weather, muck and many river crossings, had a ball. The scout's motto 'be prepared' paid off. Up Tipp!

November Rosaries in our parish cemeteries

Fethard & District Rugby Club News
On Sunday last Fethard hosted two clubs from Clonmel and Galbally in a mini-blitz in what can only be described as a great morning's rugby. The coaches from Fethard would like to thank all parents for there support and in providing all the refreshments it was very much appreciated from all.

Fethard U7
The Under 7s had a fine morning of Tag Rugby scoring a good number of tries against Clonmel. The team of Luke Fitzgerald, Padraig O'Dwyer, Luke Dolan, Robyn O'Shea, Michael James Phelan, Mark Neville, Tomas Ryan, Paraic Heffernan, David McCormack, Tom Smyth, Louis Ryan, Clodagh Foley, Oisín Ryan and Andrew Wall performed well and improved again showing a great defence.

Fethard U8
In their first game against Clonmel the U8s scored a handful of tries with Michael Long continually tackling and turning over the ball for Ben Ruttle, James Ryan and James McCormack to score. Johnny Gleeson showed determination with Charlie Cummins in tackling and ball recycling particularly in the second match against Galbally. Conor Neville put in fine runs with good passing and tackling.

Fethard U9
The two U9 games were a joy to watch with an excellent level of tackling, running and passing. This team has gone unbeaten this season and playing the way they do it will take a good side to do so. See you all at training on Friday.

Fethard U10
Fethard U10s closely fought match with Clonmel ended in victory with excellent driving, rucking and mauling. The try scorers, Ethan Coen, Darragh Fitzgerald and Angus MacDonald benefited from strong team play.
The second match against Galbally a real war of attrition that kept spectators gripped. Staunch tackling from Courtney Jade, Mark McCormack, Ian Harrington and David Gunn, explosive running with the ball from Eoin Walsh, Dara O'Connell, Jack Hassett, Mathew Burke and Richard Robinson ably supported by Lucy Murphy, Angus, Ethan and Darragh put Fethard ahead by two scores. Galbally rallied in the second half and the game ended a draw.

Fethard U11
The U11s had a great a great win over Clonmel and were narrowly beaten by Galbally. Conor Vaughan, Will Ruttle, Declan Heyes and Gary Delaney had fine performance. Many thanks for all the parents that provided food on the day.

Fethard U12
Fethard U12s proved too strong for the Clonmel team and were beaten 2-1 by a strong Galbally team. This team is improving every week and Joe Carroll, Aaron Delaney, Patrick Scully, Barry McGrath and the Pearson boys, Conor and Oliver, were to the fore.

Fethard U13
Fethard U13s played a team from Carrick-on-Suir and whilst Fethard did not win, the display they gave against a way more mature U13 team from Carrick was outstanding. With the obvious height difference in the two teams, Carrick tried a lot of high ball which was dealt with very well by Fethard. The coaches from both sides would like to thank the parents for the soup and sandwiches.

Fethard U15
Kilfeacle visited Fethard on Sunday morning for an U15's challenge match. Fethard squad did very well in the first half scoring three tries with great performances from Killian O'Dwyer, Darren Prout, Adam Fitzgerald and Jody Sheehan. The pack led by Bill Phelan, Connie Coen and Michael Gaynor fronted up to a larger Kilfeacle scrum but produced clean quick ball to go wide, getting the better of Kilfeacle.
A total team change for the start of the second half ensured that everyone played. We saw a huge effort to retain the lead with a Larry Gleeson try responding to a score from Kilfeacle, but they continued to pile on the pressure and closed the gap on Fethard to within four points as the final whistle went. The return match will take place over the coming weeks.

Fethard J2s
Fethard J2s made the long journey to Newcastle West on Saturday last. Fethard were very slow to start and Newcastle West took advantage of this building up a lead of 26 points at half time. It was only then that Fethard realised they were in a match.
Fethard took control in the second half and played the whole forty minutes in the opposition half, and ran in three fine tries through Philip Ivors, Shane Kavanagh and Keith Brown, scoring on his debut. Fethard will need to produce this display on a weekly basis from now on. Mathew Fitzgerald, Mark Ronan and Kevin Hayes had fine games when introduced.
