The Tipperary Foxhounds held their Opening Meet in Fethard on Bank Holiday Monday, October 27, in Fethard. A special welcome was accorded on Monday last to the two new joint masters, Ms Marion Goodbody and Mr Liam Kearney, who join Mr Paul Ronan and Mr Timmy Hyde in the joint mastership of the 'Gallant Tipps'.

Ms Goodbody is continuing a great family tradition. Marian is granddaughter of Mr Richard Burke, Grove. Mr Burke is regarded as one of the legendary members and huntsmen of the Tipps. Indeed some of the great runs recorded by the Tipps are dating back to his term as Master in the late 19th and early 20th century and are still often spoke of and have become a very large part of local hunting folklore

The new Masters shone in the rather damp day, and McCarthy's Hotel very kindly sponsored refreshments for one and all, which were very welcoming. Derry Donnegan (Huntsman), Charlie Daily (new Whipper In) and the followers moved off shortly after 11am and a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Tipperary Foxhounds held their opening meet in Fethard on Monday, October 31. A very large mounted field of 108 riders turned out on the day. The largest crowd of foot and car followers in recent years were also out enjoying the days hunting.

First draw at McGraths bog held a brace. Hounds hunted from here across the Monroe link road through Rocklow and across the Fethard Moyglass road by Dr. Condon's to Ballybough. Right-handed here they ran down to the Community Sportsfield crossing Strylea boreen to the maize field at the parochial house. Three foxes left here. Hounds hunted one back towards Ballybough but were stopped as they were hunting towards land already crossed.

John Halleys and Rocklow were blank. A fox at Crehane's grove went to ground quickly. Finding at Black's Bridge and hunting with great cry in the thick undergrowth in this small covert, they crossed the road and hunted to Kilnockin Racecourse and back down through Rathvin to Dr. Condon's.

Power's wood and Ardsallagh were also blank and home was blown at 3.45pm. While foxes were scarce on the end of Monday's country the hunting had was first class. The first run and the hunting at Black's Bridge provided great entertainment at close quarters for the large crowd of car followers on the roads nearby. Great to see such support for hunting in the area long recognised as the 'Home of Hunting'.
On Monday last the Tipperary Foxhounds commenced their 191st season. Long may it continue.

On Saturday, October 29, the Fethard Arms was the place to be when Fethard GAA members attended a presentation to Eoin Fitzgerald by Jimmy O'Shea for his active contribution to the Tipperary minor football panel, winners of this year's All Ireland minor football final. Then unbeknown to Jimmy, Patsy Lawrence, chairman of the senior club, presented Jimmy with a token of the club's appreciation for his contribution to the club, which spans most of his life, from player to manager to chairman and to the present as Jimmy is still involved on the senior committee. Dinny Burke gave a fitting tribute to Jimmy, recalling his role in the club and the affect his inspiration has made to members of the club over the years.

Fethard GAA Club will hold their AGM on Friday, December 2, at 8pm in the Tirry Centre, Fethard. Nominations to the executive committee must be with the club secretary, Mary Godfrey, by 8pm on Friday, November 11. Rule 6.2 (Club Constitution) and Rule 7.3 (Club Constitution) applies.

Fethard Juvenile Club's AGM took place on Friday, October 28. It was well attended and very positive feedback was given on the year past. Our chairman, P.J. Aherne stepped down, in order to allow 'new blood' into the driving seat. P.J. has been an enormous asset to the club. He was the driving force behind the development of the new facilities and, more so, a brilliant leader to all our members. Thankfully P.J. will remain on the committee.

We are delighted to announce the Andy O'Donovan has taken up the roll as Juvenile Club chairman, with Mick O'Mahoney as vice-chairman. Ann Fleming remains secretary along with Ronan Fitzgerald as assistant secretary. New to the executive committee is John Neville who replaces Andy O'Donovan as treasurer. John Hurley remains as assistant treasurer as does Eoghan Hurley as our juvenile player's representative. We do, however, need a PRO for the coming year, so anyone who can fill this post, please contact Andy on 087 9882344 or Ann on 086 8963925.

With the White Heathers
Bright warm sunshine, clear blue skies and weather we did not get in June or July greeted the large crowd who turned out to meet the Ballylusky White Heathers at their opening meet in Drangan on Sunday last. Such conditions usually signify poor scent but the exact opposite was the case in Drangan on Sunday. On this very good scenting day hounds hunted well throughout.

A fox from Knockroe ran to Mullally's gorse and away at the top they ran to O'Donovan's, Tullicussane. Hunting two circles of the large plantation they hunted out at the Cloneen-Drangan road and back to the large field of kale towards Gleesons. From here they hunted to the glen behind Michael McCormacks and to ground.

A fox from near Priestown Bridge at Glenmuiladubhe proved quite a good run almost to the Five-Eyed-Bridge on the Mullinahone-Cloneen road. Back to Phelan's, Cappanagrane, they found again. Hunted from here back towards Knockroe getting to ground in a drain under the road by Priestown House. A few hounds, however, succeeded in getting into the drain. They bolted their fox and hunted back to Phelans glen where a halt was called to a very good day.

The Ballylusky White Heather Harriers will meet on Sunday, November 13, at Cloneen; Sunday, November 20, at Loughcapple; and Sunday, November 27, at Ballylusky. All meets at 11am.

Our minor ladies have now played two games in the championship and following last weeks defeat to St. Ailbes, bounced back in terrific style on Sunday with a comprehensive victory over local rivals St. Patricks. We wish the ladies the best of luck in the remainder of the championship.

Our U16 ladies are still waiting to play their County final against Aherlow which looks likely to be played towards the end of the month. This has been a long campaign for the girls who started training in February and great credit to them for maintaining a constant presence at training. Well done girls and keep the effort going now for the final couple of weeks.

Our three All Ireland U14 medal winners will be presented with their All Ireland and Munster medals at a function in Cahir House Hotel on Friday, November 25. This will be a proud night for our club to see Katie, Jessie and Ciara bring three All Ireland medals back to Fethard. Well done again girls.

Fethard Ladies Football Club will hold a table quiz and monster raffle in Butlers Bar on Friday, November 18, at 9.30pm. Table of four will cost €40 or €10 per person. We appeal to all players and parents for their support on the night. Proceeds will help keep the club moving forward given the large numbers we now cater for, so all help and support will be greatly appreciated.

Fethard J2 Rugby
Fethard J2s headed to Kilfeacle to play in the Gleeson League on Saturday night last and came away with a well-deserved victory. The Fethard performance was one of the best this season and many positives can be taken from it.

Philip Ivors at number six was a powerhouse throughout the game and with Seamie O'Keefe at seven and the return of Billy Horan at eight, Fethard were dominating long periods of this game.

Nigel O'Connell, Nicko Hynes and Robert Hall who scored a well worked try and did trojan work in rucks and mauls. The scrums were very solid where Mathew Fitzgerald, David Kelly and Mush Dwyer were to the fore. Declan Doyle landed some great penalties and Chris Large, Shane Kavanagh and Trevor Ivors made some great breaks. his Fethard team is progressing well but much hard work is needed in training. Training continues on Tuesday and Fridays at 8pm. Our thanks to Trevor in Sir Rolands for his hospitality on the night.

Fethard Macra News
The big event of the Macra national calendar was held in cork last weekend. The national rally saw a major crowd of Macra members from around the country convene at the 'Radisson Blu' in Little Island for the three days. A number of our club members attended and we were well represented in the various competitions. Michael Moclair represented us in the senior All-Ireland Sheep Stockjudging whilst Stephen Tierney narrowly missed out on first place in the U23 Beef Stockjudging, coming in a close second place.

The final of the 'Know your Agriculture' quiz was held on Friday night, and being run in conjunction with the Irish Farmers Journal, is always challenging. This is the second time in the last three years Fethard have reached the final, representing South Tipperary. We narrowly missed out on a third place finish on the night. Twenty-one teams took part. Our team comprised of David Ryan, Michael Moclair, Stephen Tierney and Noel Clancy.

Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, officially opened the rally on Friday night after which he held a question and answer session. Though the mood was generally upbeat concerning our agricultural industry there was some concerns shared concerning the current milk quota crisis, the major CAP reforms and the future of our beef, lamb and milk product export markets.

There will be a county Macra meeting in the Pumphouse, Grangemockler, this Friday night, November 4, at 8pm followed by the Individual impromptu debating round.

It's that time of year again for the annual autumn rugby trip to Thomond Park. Tickets for the Munster against Edinburgh game and a night in the hotel will cost €60 all in! Anyone who wishes to go should contact Mickey on 087 7774837.

Now that autumn is here and the nights are drawing in, volleyball has begun again on a weekly basis. All South Tipp members are invited to attend. Games take place every Thursday night at 9pm in Clerihan hall. See you there!

Here at the club we are on a recruitment drive for new members so if you think you would like to join why not come along to one of the many Macra events or to a meeting. There is something for everyone whether it be sport, drama or anything else. For more information or to become a member, phone our chairperson, Liam Cleary on 086 3998711.

Fethard Players will stage John B. Keane's, 'Year of the Hiker', in the Abymill Theatre from Friday, November 11, to Wednesday, November 16. The play is produced by Austy O'Flynn.

This is a beautiful play, with the gags and humour failing to mask the sense of hurt and futile loss of lives not fully lived. If only people could control how they acted - not let pride, shyness, cruel flippancy and jealousy muddle life up and store up future regrets.

The play, first produced in 1964, tells the peculiar story of a man nicknamed The Hiker who returns home looking for forgiveness from the family he walked out on 20 years ago.

The Hiker walked out 20 years ago, without a murmur since, and nobody seems to know why he went after eight years of marriage. Or do they? Hardest hit was Kate who withered in loneliness and shame, and Joe, who recalls the tender patience his father had for him and his devastation at being abandoned by his idol.

The Hiker's departure rocked the family and it was not just the embarrassment and anger that left such a mark. Towards the end of the play the Hiker points out the close proximity of love and hate.
Commencing at 8.15p. Tickets are €12 and booking is now open at O'Flynn's Menswear, Fethard. Tel: (052) 6131254 or 087 1604260.
