Once again we were blessed with a beautiful day for our annual pilgrimage to the Holy Year Cross. Ceremonies began at the hill wall where Fr Anthony McSweeney led the prayers and as our cross bearers reached each station they were all in turn blessed by Fr Anthony. At the cross itself people took the opportunity to take a few photos and admire the fantastic views. Then it was back to the Mass rock in O'Donnell’s field where Canon Tom Breen P.P. celebrated Mass assisted by Fr Anthony McSweeney and Fr Gerry Horan OSA.

After mass, Jimmy and Eileen O’Donnell along with their band of helpers served up tea and refreshments to one and all. We must thank a few people for making this day possible, firstly to the O’Donnell family, not just for letting us invade their property but also for all the work they put in. A big thank you to our clergy who give us their time and help keep the tradition alive. Thanks also to all the local lads who answered the call and put in such a massive effort during the last few weeks, while back in the field, Gus Fitzgerald and Christy Williams kept things moving nicely. We also thank Bobby Phelan and Fethard Scouts for their help and use of their marquee. Of course the day would be nothing if it wasn't for all of you who took the time and effort to be with us, especially to all those parents of young children, the religious aspect of the day might go over their heads but the memories will last forever.

A final thank you to all who donated to our fund, every cent will be put to good use. So until next year take care and God willing we will do it all again.

Sr. Monica recalls leaving Fethard in 1935

A photo that appeared on the Fethard website sparked a flood of nostalgic memories for Sr. Monica Kevin OSU who was one of four young local girls, the others being Nuala O’Brien, Kitty McCarthy and Nellie Carey, who left Fethard on August 8, 1935, to join the Ursulines of Tildonk order in New York City.

Sr. Monica, born on the 19th March 1920, in Barrack Street, Fethard, goes on to recall her memories of that eventful trip as she looks at the photograph:

Photographed above are the four young Fethard girls, L to R: Nuala O'Brien, Monica Kevin, Kitty McCarthy and Nellie Carey, leaving on the boat from Cobh to join the Ursuline Order in New York in 1935.

A space of 78 years dims the memory but there is a residual thirst for home in all of us that we take to our graves.

We sailed from Cobh on a tender that brought us to ocean liner, the U.S. President Harding. That short trip is embedded in my memory as a first class wake and tear jerker. Most of the people who were emigrating were crying anyway and the music was no help. We sailed in the dark of night to strains of ‘Come back to Erin’, ‘I’ll take you home again Kathleen’, ‘Molly Bawn’ et al.

The photograph was taken on the deck of the ‘Harding’ in 1935. Life on board was exciting and after the first day we had adjusted to movement, got our sea legs and stopped watching the water. There were lots of activities like shuffle board, horse racing (on a table), some dancing on deck to music provided by a German man who had a concertina. As I recall, the Reverend Mother who was travelling with us was not pleased when she heard I had been dancing. In many ways it was a culture shock that was a good experience for young Convent School girls.

After eight days of sea and sky we approached New York Harbour. To this day the sight of The Statue of Liberty evokes the memories of that day. I knew I was in a foreign land and was determined to make whatever adjustments would be necessary. I had arrived at step number one along my pilgrimage. I knew three years before that I wanted to be a nun. I also believed I was called by God and had a responsibility to respond to that call.

Several other girls from the Presentation Convent School in Fethard had already entered The Ursulines in New York. Cissy Power, a classmate of my sister Mai, had entered a few years before and I recall saying to myself, “If Cissy Power can do it so can I.” I recall Mother Benignus telling me that I would not be lonely, there were so many Fethard girls in the Order. She was shocked to hear my response (from a 15 year old), “We live our own lives.”

The pilgrimage has taken all four of us in many directions always in service to the Church and to the people of God and we thank God for all His blessings that have come our way and for the loving support and friendship of the members of our community — the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk — whose motto is, ‘Ut Unum Sint’, That All May be One.

Major-General Richard Orlando Kellett
One of my retirement activities is researching for PhD through the University of Birmingham. My topic relates to the First World War. More specifically, it is concerned with the role and performance of brigadier-generals during the Battle of Arras in 1917. My thesis will include a number of case studies of individual brigadier-generals, one of whom is Richard Orlando Kellett who commanded 99 Brigade, 2nd Division in 1917, and whose family home was at Clonacody, Fethard.
I wondered if anyone might be able to point me in the right direction. My specific question concerning 'The General' is to establish whether there is a photograph or portrait of him anywhere, whether held locally of in some national archive or gallery. I wonder, for example, if a picture of him might have appeared in a local paper, either at the time of his death in 1931 or sometime before then. Is there a local newspaper which might have an archive of past editions? Is there a member of a local historical society who might have research the Kelletts and who might have a picture/portrait?

I would be extremely grateful for any information or advice concerning possible sources about Major-General Kellett to which you might be able to point. Please accept my thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely, Trevor Harvey. Email: trevor.harvey@hotmail.co.uk
