Adult Mindfulness learners celebrate in style

To celebrate the Aontas Adult Learners Festival which ran from February 23 to 28, Veronica Crowe, Community Education Facilitator and local link for the festival, organised various workshops such as Yoga, Art, Mindfulness and Computers in various centres throughout South Tipperary. On Tuesday. February 24, over thirty women got together in the Fethard Convent Community Centre for a Health and Well Being Workshop. This workshop focused on mindfulness, beauty care and cookery, a great healthy start for 2015. The workshop was a huge success and a special ‘thank you’ to Margaret O’Neill, Eileen Bowden and all the adult learners for helping to celebrate the Festival in style. Well done to one and all!

The death has occurred on Monday, March 2, 2015 of Philip Major, Woodstown, Waterford and Clonmel, suddenly, at his residence. Very deeply regretted by his children Simon and AJ, parents Noel and Dick, brother Richard, relatives and friends.
Reposing at his parents' residence, Melview, Clonmel on Thursday from 1pm to 7pm. Funeral arriving at Holy Trinity Church, Fethard at 10.45am on Friday for Requiem Mass at 11am followed by private cremation.
Killusty Tidy Village Development Group
The next meeting of the
Killusty Tidy Village Development Group will take place on Thursday, March 12, at 7.30pm in the school room. The topic for discussion is the 'Tidy Village Plan'.
Great progress has been made following the recent meetings and there was an excellent attendance of local residents supporting this initiative. All are welcome and invited to get involved.

Fethard Choral Society members are currently busy rehearsing for their forthcoming appearance at Limerick Choral Festival which will be held in various venues in Limerick this coming weekend. The Choral Society will be competing in two categories - the choirs unison and choirs parts events - both of which will be held in the Augustinian Church, O'Connell Street, Limerick on Saturday, March 7. The choir have competed in New Ross for the past two years and are looking forward to their first appearance in the Limerick Choral Festival.
The choral group was formed in September 2012 under the musical director Ann Barry, who is also the organist at Fethard Augustinian Abbey, where the choir held their first public performance on Sunday, December 16, 2012. We wish them the best of luck in Limerick.
Tipperary Foxhounds say farewell to Derry Donegan

Derry Donegan has decided to retire from Hunt Service, having completed nine seasons as Huntsman of The Tipperary Foxhounds. On Saturday, February 21, a Lawn Meet was held at Killeens, Ballynonty, kindly hosted by Mr and Mrs Edward O’Grady. The masters presented Derry with an oil painting by the up and coming equestrian artist, Liam Clancy, on behalf of the members, subscribers, foot followers, puppy walkers and friends of The Tipperary Foxhounds, who have all enjoyed the sport he has provided over the years. The painting depicts a scene of a day’s hunting from Ballyluskey. We wish Derry, Wendy and their family all the very best for the future, and we welcome our present whipper-in, Gavin Shorten, as our new huntsman.

The lengthening days may signal the approach of Spring, unfortunately for all hunting people it also heralded the close of the hunting season. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers held their closing meet on Sunday, February 22, at Barne. The White Heathers had a very good season with exceptionally good days from Fethard Rectory on November 23; Rocklow, December 7; Peppardstown, January 4; and Fedamore, January 22. They drew no day blank, perhaps there were days when they took on the elements of driving rain and gale force winds and the elements won and an early finish was the order of the day.
The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers would like to thank sincerely all landowners over whose land they hunted during the season. A special thank-you to all supporters who entertained them so well on invitation meets. Their final fanfare of the season is their annual draw which takes place in the Archway Bar, Drangan, on Monday, March 16. Go dtí an céad lá eile, go Dé sibh slán. (E.A.N.)

Deeply regretted by his loving wife Nora, sons Frank, John, Dan, Jimmy, Brendan and Brian, daughters Rita (Brennan), Castlecomer, Ena (Dunphy), Cloneen, Noreen (White), Clonmel, and Claire (O'Meara), Fethard, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Reposing Tuesday, March 3, in Brett's Funeral Home, Mullinahone from 5pm to 8pm. Requiem Mass on Wednesday morning, March 4, to The Church Of The Nativity, Cloneen, for 12 noon followed by burial immediately afterwards in adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only please. House strictly private on Wednesday morning - Immediate family only please.
Fethard Athletic Club

Fethard Athletic Club enjoyed more success last Sunday in the County Novice B held in Moyne when Joey Feery put in a sterling performance in very testing conditions to finish 3rd in the men’s 6k event. Aine Doocey, Zane Zorina and Nicola Guiry made up the ladies team and all beat their previous times for the Novice A event so a good day for the club all around.
Training continues each Monday and Friday at 7.15pm from the ballroom carpark, new members welcome as always. Walkers and joggers equally welcome to join us.

The following were nominated for the January and February Fethard Sports Achievement awards: nominations for Jan/Feb.
- Benny Morrissey – recent over-50 winner at a tournament in Fermoy.
- Patrician Presentation Secondary School – All-Ireland Cadet volleyball champions.
- Áine Doocey – bronze medallist over-35 at the recent county masters road race held in Fethard.
- Joey Feery – won a high quality 4k road race in Clonmel.
- Bernard Feery – First over-50 in the county masters road race held in Fethard.
- Scoil Ruain – Munster champions in ladies senior football containing seven Fethard ladies on the team.
- Jodie Sheehan – Captain of Presentation Ballingarry U18 Gaelic football team Munster champions in their section.
- Liz Lalor – Trained one and rode three winners during February, her first winner as a trainer.
- Tommy Anglim and Ben Murray – Members of Fethard rugby club who are doing very well with Rockwell College at Munster schools senior cup level.
- Dean Tobin – Munster champion Junior B with Killenaule.
- Deirdre Goggin – Rode two winners trained by her father at a recent trotting event in West Cork.
- Fethard GAA Club – Nominated for the great work done improving the school field to match standard.
- Fethard Rugby U16 boys team – Just qualified to play in the Pan Munster stage of their competition.
The two monthly winners will be announced at a function in Butlers Bar on this coming Friday, March 6, at 10pm.
Killusty Soccer Club
Killusty Soccer Club will hold a Mass on Wednesday next, March 11, at 7.30pm, dedicated to the late Michael Cranitch and all the deceased members of the club. All players past and present are asked to please take note and come along if possible.

Fethard Fitness initiate starting soon
All are invited to take part in a new ‘Couch to 5K’ fitness training initiate that will commence in Fethard Rugby Club (small field), starting March 20 for eight weeks with a qualified instructor and runner, Biddy O'Dwyer Contact: 087 6410352. Training will take place from 7.15pm to 8pm and is suitable for all levels of fitness even if you never ran before or never want to run, this will still increase your fitness. Remember there is no pressure on anyone to run and walkers are welcome too.
This is a continuation of Operation Transformation and is open to everyone. The weigh-in will take place afterwards for those who wish to keep it up. €4 per session pay-as-you-go.
Fethard starts 18-month water main upgrade

Fethard businesses and traffic are heading for a long eighteen month disruption as Irish Water commence with the long awaited upgrade to the town’s water supply and sewerage system. Work commenced in Burke Street on Monday morning, March 2, and local businesses on the street are feeling the pinch as customers try and find alternative ways to their shops. It is estimated that Burke Street will take two months to complete. The lower end, from the Augustinian Abbey to Emily’s Delicatessen, will be shut off for the next month and the other end for the following month. The local business owners would like to stress that business is open as usual and they, like Irish Water, apologise for any inconvenience caused.
There is no easy way to complete the work but the benefits to Fethard will be well worth the eighteen-month wait. The project will improve water pressure and reduce leakage levels which have been high due to the poor condition cast iron water main and lead services. It will also reduce the loading on the wastewater treatment plant and prevent overflows into the Clashawley river.

The entrance to the Sports Centre was the original front entrance to Fethard Barracks on The Square, believed at that time to be the original home of the Everard family. It was later revealed that the Military Barracks in Fethard was one of the oldest in the country. It was built on the site of the original Everard Mansion House which fell into decay c.1740 while Sir Redmond Everard (the last Baronet) lived abroad in France.
In 1752, Thomas Barton of Bordeaux purchased the Everard estate in Fethard, demolished the old Mansion House and erected a new one on the same spot. The Barton Mansion House was acquired in 1797 and converted into a temporary military barracks, lighted by oil, and used to accommodate two troops of Cavalry. It was converted into proper military barracks in 1805.

Michael Sadlier, Seventh Battalion, Third Tipperary Brigade, killed in action on the Republican side in the Civil War and died in Cashel hospital from injuries received on November 3, 1922. On the left is his brother, Dinny Sadlier, also of the Seventh Battalion and member of Lacey’s Column, who was shot accidentally on June 13, 1921, near Cloneen.
In a statement by Dan Breen he recalls Michael Sadlier’s funeral passing through Fethard: “Commandant Mick Sadlier’s remains were laid to rest beside those of his brother in Drangan. All business was suspended in Fethard and blinds were drawn as the funeral procession passed through the streets of the town. The funeral was of large dimensions, one hundred and thirty-eight cars and sixteen motors testifying to the respect in which the deceased soldier was held by the people of his native district. A unique tribute from the enemy was shown in the flying of the tricolour at half-mast over the Garda Barracks in Fethard on the day of the funeral.”

The numbers drawn on February 25 were: 2, 7, 12 and 21. We had no jackpot winner and three ‘Match Three’ winners who received €50 each: Margaret Maher, Kilboy, Killenaule; Rita Burke, Woodvale Walk, Fethard; and Margaret Dunne, Ballycullen, Mullinahone.

Flood Risk Maps - Public Consultation Day
Draft Flood Maps are currently being produced under the Office of Public Works' National Catchment-based Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Programme. The objectives of the CFRAM Programme are to meet national flood policy needs and the requirements of the EU Floods Directive. The Programme, comprising six regional studies, involves a comprehensive flood risk assessment focused on 300 areas of potentially significant flood risk and the development of long-term, sustainable flood risk management plans.
The Office of Public Works, which is undertaking the Suir CFRAM Study, with the support of the relevant Local Authorities including Tipperary County Council, have produced Draft Predictive Flood Risk Maps for Fethard, Co. Tipperary. To provide an opportunity for all interested persons to view and comment on these maps, a Public Consultation Day will be held in Fethard Convent Community Hall, Fethard, from 3.00pm – 7.00pm on Monday, March 9, 2015. Members of the OPW Suir CFRAM Study project team will be available to discuss and explain the maps to all attending on the day. The Draft Flood Maps will be on display on the date stated and will also be accessible on www.southeastcframstudy.ie from that date. Members of the public may provide observations, in person, on the Draft Flood Maps, at the above public consultation event and/or through the website.
