Dinny was a son of the late Mick Flynn, The Green, and was an avid reader and supporter of the Fethard & Killusty Enigrant's Newsletter. He was a regular visitor to Fethard and also to his relatives in Cork. A quiet, gentle and very generous man, Dinny will be sadly missed by all his friends in Fethard, relatives in Cork, England and Australia.

May he rest in peace. Funeral arrangements later.

End of an Era for Killusty National School

Mrs Frances Harrington, retired principal at KIllusty National Scholl, photographed with staff members Tracy Wallace (left) and Catriona Morrissey (right).

The arrival of the Christmas holidays was a bittersweet day for the children and staff of Killusty NS and indeed for the whole community of Killusty. It was with much sadness that everyone said farewell to Mrs Harrington who after 38 years of dedicated service is dusting off the blackboard and handing over the chalk!

Mrs Frances Harrington started teaching in Killusty in 1975 when she became assistant teacher, replacing Mrs Flood. She taught in the junior room and was often referred to as, "Our mammy in school", by the young pupils in her care.

She left Killusty and taught for almost three years in England and America. Thankfully she returned again to the valley of Slieve na mban and continued shaping the young minds of Killusty. Frances became principal in October 2002 when Mr Danny Kane retired, and held this position until December of this year.

Frances always showed commitment and dedication to the children and parents of Killusty NS. She was gifted at nurturing children to their best. She invariably had a kind word, a loving smile and a gentle reprimand was usually enough to correct when the line had been crossed! Firm but fair is how her pupils describe her. She had a genuine interest in all the school community and always encouraged kindness, respect and concern.

In 2010 Killusty NS celebrated its centenary and also the official opening of the new school extension. Frances played a huge role in bringing this extension from idea to reality. Thanks to her endeavours and many long working days, Killusty now has a bright, comfortable, child friendly school with modern features such as interactive whiteboards and yet it retains the charm of a country school.
Frances always strove to give every child a safe and happy environment where they could learn and develop to their full potential. Sport, music, drama, healthy eating and care for the environment were actively encouraged. She has been not only a teacher, but a leader, a mentor, a colleague and a friend.

As Frances finishes this phase of her life and embarks on a new one, we wish her the very best. No doubt she will put as much energy into being retired as she did into teaching! We wish her many years of happiness with her husband Noel, her children, her daughters in law and her beloved grandchildren. In the words of the children of Killusty:

Slán go fóill,
Go raibh maith agat,
Tóg sos, cuir suas do chos
Agus ná déan dearmad
Tá tú go hiontach!

Following advise and recommendations it was decided to organise a presentation by one of Ireland’s leading companies, SafeTown, to explain how their security technology works in other towns similar to Fethard. The presentation has been provisionally set for Tuesday, January 28, at 8pm in the Tirry Community Centre. This date has to be confirmed.

The death has occurred in England on November 21, 2013, of Mr Vincent Mullins, aged 79 years. Vince, formerly from Chapel Lane, left Fethard in the early sixties to pursue a career in National Hunt Racing and it was there in Yorkshire that he met and married Gladys who now sadly mourns his loss.

With the White Heathers
Favoured by a good day, the Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers had good hunting following their St. Stephen’s Day meet at Drangan. Finding at the far end of Priestown they ran towards the Mullinahone-Ballingarry road. Turning right-handed they hunted to the Priestown road at Cappanagrane. Back through Gleeson’s the crossed the road towards Knockroe. Swinging left they headed back to Glenmuicaduibhe bridge where they re-crossed the road.

Running back to Priestown to the big cover they marked to ground in the big grove close to Priestown House. This was an excellent hunt with a one and half mile point and certainly double that distance as hounds run.

Fethard seniors snatch victory from the jaws of defeat
Fethard seniors travelled to Richmond on Saturday last and despite been short many regulars put in a fine performance to win by 20 points to 18. William Power scored a try with only minutes remaining after Fethard forwards went through about twenty phases to get into the Richmond 22, when Conor Kavanagh broke blind to feed Kieran Power who off loaded to William who scored in the corner.

Fethard started very well with a great by Kevin Hayes who found Richie Carroll in support and Richie sprinted clear to score, Declan Doyle landed a fine penalty to leave the half time score 15-8 to Richmond. Fethard were now dominating exchanges and a fine lineout move saw Chris Bannister score under the post. Doyler converted to leave the score 15 all. Richmond came back with a penalty but Fethard showed great heart to put the phases together to score the winning try.
Matthew Ryan, Jimmy Pollard, Emmet O’Mahony and John Ryan had fine games for Fethard.

Next week we’re away to UL Bohemians on Saturday, time to be confirmed.

Kennedy information wanted
I am researching my family history and some of my ancestors lived in Chapel Lane, Fethard. I have been told that two of my great uncles (surname Kennedy who lived in Chapel Lane) were members of the IRA and sometime during World War I they were shot and killed by the Black and Tans and their bodies were hung from a bridge in Fethard for several days as a warning to others. The bridge has a plaque depicting this. I wonder if anyone has any information or photos of this bridge? I'm sorry I don't have more information. The only other information I have is that their sister Josephine Kennedy lived in Chapel Lane, Fethard, until her death in approximately 1971.
Any information at all would be most helpful. Thanks.

U14 South and County Medal Presentation
To all parents and players the U14 South and County Hurling Medal Presentation will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2014, between 6pm and 8pm at the Fethard Convent Community Centre. We would also invite all members of the 2013, U12 football and hurling panels, both B and D, to attend. On the night we have two Tipperary GAA guests to make the presentations, Colin O’Riordan of JK Brakens (son of Michael O’Riordan, Fethard & Tipperary), current member of Tipperary Senior Hurling and Football panels and our very own Michael Ryan, manager of back-to-back All Ireland Hurling titles with the Tipperary Intermediate Hurling team. We would ask parents to bring along a plate of buns or a cake to help along with the celebrations on the night. All are welcome young and old to mark this great achievement by this bunch of Fethard boys who made history by landing the first south and county hurling title in the history of Fethard GAA.

John ‘Red’ Kelly
Dear Irish Friends, I was so pleased to find information about Red Kelly on the Fethard website. However, I am writing to you wondering why the old Moyglass church was demolished, and as recently as 1989. Is this common in Ireland?

It seems such a strong draw for the diaspora to return to the church where their great great grandparents were married. Such a strong tourist attraction for Ireland. It’s a pity also and a lost opportunity the church where my some of my great grandparents were married in 1854 was also demolished not so long ago.

Here in Melbourne I can go to St Francis Church and be where Ellen Quinn and Red Kelly made their marriage vows. Two other sets of my Irish great grandparents were married in St Francis Church (then St Francis Cathedral). It is wonderful to be in two times in the one palace as Seamus Heaney once said.

Thank you for all the wonderful work you do. Wishing you all the blessings of Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
Sincerely, Mary Kenneally (email: mary.kenneally@gmail.com)
