VOTE FOR 'BRIGHT IDEAS'VOTE FOR 'PUNKTURE'

Congratulations to Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School pupils Junk Kouture entries, 'Bright Ideas' and 'Punkture', who have both qualified for the grand All-Ireland final, which will be held in the City West Hotel in Dublin on April 20. Fethard had 100% success at the semi-finals in Limerick on Sunday, April 1, when both teams got through to the all-Ireland final. Competition was extremely high at the semi-finals from the fifty costumes that were shown on the night from the Munster schools that qualified. Eighteen were chosen to go forward to the all Ireland final.

'Bright Ideas', created by Aobh O'Shea and Danielle Sheehan, is made entirely from crisp bags while 'Punkture', created by Karen Hayes, Michelle Walsh and Svetlana Novikova, is made from bicycle tubes.
For the final, 10% of the voting is online so we are again looking for your votes for this final round. Voting has already begun and lines will stay open until April 13.

We wish both teams every success with their costumes at the final, and acknowledge all the many hours of work put in to their haute Junk Kouture outfits.

Colm McGrath and Terry Cunningham, 'Backs to the Wall Tours', who will give guided tour of medieval Fethard on Easter Monday, April 9, at 12 noon.

A guided tour of medieval Fethard will take place this Easter Monday, April 9, at 12 noon. This historic walk is being provided by the new 'Backs to the Wall Tours' guiding service being jointly promoted by locals Colm McGrath and Terry Cunningham.

The Backs to the Wall tours are normally pre-booked by visiting coach groups or schools but some 'open tours' will be scheduled, especially during holiday periods, so as to give a chance to individuals and families to join in on an historic walk around this unique town. The tour would be especially interesting for any 'local' who wants to brush up on the history of their home place or to visitors who are in the area for Easter.

The tour will begin at 12 noon from the Foot Bridge in the Valley Park and will last one and a half hours. No booking is required, just turn up, the cost is €5 per person and children are free. Further details of the Backs to the Wall Tours programme can be got from www.backstothewalltours.com or by phoning Colm 086 350 2360 or Terry 086 390 53 73.

Fethard Ladies Football Club
The girls Under 12 team played a challenge match on Thursday, March 29. We had a fabulous turnout of twenty-four girls for this match. Based on how all the girls played in this challenge against a strong Commercials side, the Under 12s should do well in the first championship match at home against Mullinahone at 12.30pm this weekend. On Saturday, March 31, the Under 14 team played their first challenge at home against Mullinahone. The girls from Kickham's hometown arrived with only twelve players, so they picked up three of the younger players from Fethard to make up a full team. Both teams were reasonably well matched for much of the first half. But in the second half, the strength of the Mullinahone girls really shone through, and they finished comfortable winners.

Also on Saturday, the Junior Ladies team played their first match of the Junior B League. With a few players absent because of other commitments, we had a struggle to get a full team together for the trip to Ballyporeen. Despite the low numbers available, Fethard matched Ballyporeen for much of the game but just weren't able to get the scores. On two occasions, the Bally girls grabbed a pair of goals in quick succession. But Fethard kept plugging away, and finished the game with a score of 4-10 to 3-4.

On Sunday, our Under 16 Team played Cappawhite and put in a really good performance despite being missing a few key players. Fethard were level with 1-5 each at half-time. In the second half, Cappawhite racked up several scores without reply and eventually finished the game as winners on a scoreline on 2-15 to 1-9. A massive effort is needed at training over the next few weeks to make sure we are ready for a possible semi-final spot later in April.

Well done to all our teams, and best of luck in your championship and league fixtures. The numbers in the Last Man Standing are very easy to count now! Although we have a few results yet to confirm in this round, it looks like there are about four people left in the running. You can follow all our progress on the Fethard Ladies Football Facebook page.

Fethard Historical Society
The AGM of the Fethard Historical Society took place in the Abymill Theatre on Tuesday, March 27, and the outgoing chairperson, Colm McGrath, reported on another positive year for the society and its activities. The annual Tipperariana Book Fair in February was again the main fundraising event of the year and the very successful Medieval Festival last August entailed a lot of planning and work by members of the society.

The future staging of the Medieval Festival was discussed in some length and an application for funding has been lodged with the Heritage Council as a sum of ten thousand euro is needed to organise a festival to the standard of the past few years.

The AGM was also very supportive of the County Council’s on-going efforts, along with the Fethard Business and Tourism Group, to develop the Town Hall as the focal point for the ‘visitor experience’ to the town as well, of course, as an amenity for the citizens of the parish.
The society has been approached by the South Tipperary Tourism Company (set up a few years ago to develop tourism in the county) to see how Fethard can join Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel and Cahir in the promotion of ‘The Butler Trail’ which is one of the company’s main projects for the next couple of years.

A new Medieval Town Trail brochure is needed as stocks of the present brochure are low and also to tie in with the new information boards that were erected last year. An application for funding will be made in the next few weeks to the South Tipperary Development Company (Leader) for help in designing and printing a high quality Historic Town Trail brochure.

A new chairperson, Patricia Looby, was elected for the coming year. Pat is a well-known local teacher and artist who has been central to the success of the medieval festival for the past five years. The remaining officers and committee are: John Cooney (vice-chairperson), Mary Hanrahan (secretary), Anne Gleeson (assistant secretary), Catherine O’Flynn (treasurer), Terry Cunningham (public relations officer), Colm McGrath, Gerry Long, Kitty Delaney, Jane Grubb, Marie O’Donnell, Diana Stokes and Tim Robinson.

Holy Trinity National School, Fethard have been taking part in Spikeball (variation of volleyball) for the past five years, competing at local and county level. This year the hard work and commitment paid off when 6th Class boys became County Champions after a hard fought final with their younger counterparts 5th Class in an all-Fethard affair.
As County Champions, 6th Class went on to compete in the South Regional Finals in Glanmire on the March 2, representing Tipperary. After another successful day at the office the boys went on to beat Limerick to become South Regional Champions, a great achievement, cementing their place in the National Finals as one of only two teams representing the South of Ireland.

On March 27, the boys travelled to Mary Immaculate College in Limerick to compete in the National Finals. Ranking 3rd place after the pool stages they progressed to the semi-finals, easily beating the 2nd ranked team, so an All-Ireland Final beckoned. After a spirited battle, unfortunately the boys came out second best to a highly experienced and skilled Kildare team. This was a huge achievement for the team, school and community to have a primary Fethard team winning All-Ireland Runners-Up medals.

Special thanks to the boys and girls for all their hard work and commitment at training throughout the year, the parents for their support and encouragement and Kieran Butler for the fantastic photographs taken on the day.

With the Patrician Presentation Secondary School current All-Ireland Champions and Holy Trinity N.S. All-Ireland Runner-Up, the future of volleyball in Fethard looks to be in very safe hands!

Our sincere sympathy is extended to his wife and family.
