Congratulations to the Fethard and Killusty Community Games U12 girls GAA team who had such wonderful games all through the championships, from their first game against Powerstown Lisronagh to becoming County Champions in Semple Stadium and finally representing Tipperary at the HSE Community Games Munster Finals on Saturday last where Glanmire, Co. Cork, finally just proved to be too strong for them in the semifinal. We would like to congratulate all our girls and their mentors for giving us hours of excitement on their journey to Tralee where they were indeed worthy recipients of Munster Certificates.

Fethard sports achievement award nominees for June
The following nine nominations were received for the May ‘Fethard Sports Achievement Award’, promoted by Butler’s Sports Bar in Fethard. The aim is to recognise and reward sporting achievement be it at participation, coaching or administration level. Nominees must be over 18 and from Fethard parish, work in Fethard, live in Fethard (play for Fethard teams) or from Fethard but participate in sport elsewhere.

  1. Cathal Hurley – Nominated because he scored 1-11 during a recent hurling championship game against Carrick Swan. Cathal is a member of a very young Fethard team who hope to do very well this season.
  2. Claire Annan – First person to be nominated in two different sports. Following a very successful point-to-point season she has recently come to prominence in the athletics world winning the ladies road race as part of the Fethard Gathering festival.
  3. Annette Connolly, Mark Prout, Michael Spillane, Jacqui O’Flynn – Coaches and mentors to Fethard U12 ladies football team who recently won south and county titles in the community games. They were narrowly beaten last Saturday in the Munster semifinal by Cork.
  4. Jacqui Stokes Freyne – Recently represented Munster and Ireland in Masters Hockey. She played in all three games during the recent home countries internationals, drawing with Wales and Scotland and beaten narrowly by England the eventual winners.
  5. Coolmore Stud– Local breeders and owners of some of the world’s top thoroughbred racehorses. June was a very successful month with victory in the Epsom derby ‘Ruler Of The World’ followed by four winners at the Royal Ascot meeting.
  6. Fintan Rice – Local athlete again to the fore during June. He won the mens 5k run as part of the Gathering festival weekend and also finished 3rd in a very competitive 10k race in Moyne.
  7. Peggy Colville, Joe Keane – secretary and chairman of Fethard and Killusty Community Games for close to thirty years. This nomination comes following great success for some of their charges recently at county level. Medals were won at athletics, swimming, Gaelic games, art and handwriting.
  8. Bernadette O’Meara, Michael Hayes – Coaches and mentors to a very successful ladies U14 football team. Their team, which includes five girls who played for Tipp, recently won the county title beating Templemore by 3-7 to 3-4.

The June winner will be announced at a function in Butlers on Friday night next, July 5, at 10pm.

Fethard Ladies Football
Hard luck to the Tipperary U14s who lost out to Wexford in the recent All-Ireland final. There were five girls from Fethard on the panel: Megan Coen, Kate Davey, Molly O’Meara, Ciara Hayes and Laura Stocksborough. The girls put in trojan work this year at both club and county level and no doubt will be part of the county set up for years to come.

Our U12 girls played Slievenamon in the county final last Tuesday in Mullinahone and having played some terrific football to get to this stage we were up against a very talented Slievenamon side which proved a step too far for us on this occasion with 2 points separating the teams at the end. This team has come on leaps and bounds this year and it wont be long until they get another crack at a county title. The club would like to thank Sparky for supplying the food after the game.

We travelled to Tralee last Saturday to represent Tipperary in the Munster Finals of Community Games. We played the Cork champs Glanmire in the semifinals and did ourselves proud putting in a great display. Luck wasn't with us on the day and we lost out on a scoreline of 3-2 to 1-2. We came into this game as Tipperary champions and should take great pride in that. A special thanks to Peggy Colville for her tireless work in organising the Tipperary Community Games.
Get well soon to Laura Kiely who fell ill in Tralee and had to spend the night in hospital. Hopefully Laura will be back on the field soon.

A native of Dublin, Mr Britton arrived in Fethard in 1990 and was the first Principal of the newly amalgamated Patrician Presentation Secondary School. With youthful enthusiasm and energy, he oversaw the construction of the new two-storey building on the Patrician site and over the years led a number of building projects in the school. An innovative and creative leader, Mr Britton also blended successfully the traditions of the Patrician and Presentation Orders and helped to create the rich school ethos which exists today.

Significant changes in the secondary education system took place during Mr Britton’s time in Fethard: the introduction of Boards of Management, Transition Year, Leaving Cert Vocational Programme, CSPE, SPHE, School Planning, School Self-Evaluation, Students’ Council and many curricular changes. Mr Britton managed and led all of these changes successfully. Indeed, the school was ahead of the posse in this area as Mr Britton always facilitated and encouraged his staff’s participation in in-service courses and in educational initiatives.
Finally, Ernan excelled where interpersonal relationships were concerned and thus proved himself to be the ideal leader. He was understanding of both pupils and staff and faced the everyday school issues with integrity and fairness. All the staff and pupils will sadly miss him.

Well done Mr Britton on a job well done and a life well lived in Fethard. We wish you a long and happy retirement and we thank you for your enormous contribution to education in Fethard over the last twenty-three years. To quote Kahil Gibran: “All knowledge is vain where there is work and all work is empty save where there is love. And where you work with love, you bind yourself to yourself, to one another and to God”.

On Wednesday, June 19, Killusty Village and surrounding area celebrated Chrissie Byrne’s (nee Shee) milestone 100th Birthday Party with 150 people on a lovely fine day. Commencing with Mass 11.30am, Chrissie arrived to the Church at 11.45am to tremendous applause from all present. Canon Tom Breen P.P. assisted by Fr Anthony McSweeney carried out procedures with a fine introduction of Chrissie’s life and times living between her grocery shop across the road and the Church of the Sacred Heart. Chrissie’s favourite place in the church is the Marian Shrine which was unveiled on the August 15, 1954. On that same day Mrs Barnable also celebrated her 100th Birthday and was presented with a letter from the Presidents.
Following mass Killusty National School pupils sang Slievenamon and then Carri Acheson (Clonmel) made the presentation of the President’s letter and cheque for €2,540 to Chrissie. Her great-grandchild, Freya Byrne and Mrs Frances Harrington, school principal, presented a bouquet of flowers and birthday card.

Chrissie’s son Noel thanked the parishioners for coming and making her day special. He then invited all present to an afternoon in Byrne’s shop across the road for tea and refreshments organised by Bernie Byrne and family members.

A copper beech tree, donated by Fidelma O’Flaherty, Killusty Castle, was then planted to mark the occasion by Noel Byrne assisted by great-grandchild, Ewan Byrne, at the shrine area where Chrissie lived from 1921 to 1924 as Shee’s shop was built in the old school grounds when it was burned to the ground by the Black & Tans in 1921.
A great evening of chat and remembrances was had by all who travelled near and far for the special occasion with Chrissie not leaving the party until 4.45pm. Also present on the day was another parishioner, Mrs Josie Casey (nee Holohan) who will also celebrate her 100th birthday in a few months time.
