Sr Betty Cagney St Bernard’s Group Homes in in in in training for for a a a a a a 600
mile cycle cycle trip from Dinard to to Lourdes to to raise funds for for the Irish Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust (IHCPT) The cyclists will cycle cycle six hundred miles over a a a a a a a a a a a a period of seven days Sr Betty was joined by locals photographed above in in in April 2004 are L to to R: Stephanie Keating Sr Betty Cagney Bridget Fitzpatrick Bobby Power and and Sean Kelly from Carrick-on-Suir and and Garda John Lonergan tears and laughter Her retirement from us us was was the the the more poignant due to to the the the the fact that she was was the the the the last last remaining remaining religious staff employed in in in in in in in St Bernard’s and and to to our knowledge the the the last last remaining remaining sister in in in residential care in in in Ireland In preparation for for this day the the staff were were asked to provide words which which for for them best described Betty and which which were were caring kind dedicated wonderful fun energetic unselfish all heart solid safe supportive loving fearless hardworking and with a a a a a a a a a a a a knack of making things better to name but a a a a a a a few Betty did the the rounds in in in in in in in St Bernard’s working in in in in in in in all units starting in in in in in Short Term Term Emergency Unit then Medium and and Long Term Term Disability and and the the the Therapeutic High Support Service Over the the the years she she worked with lots of young people from infants to teenagers The The way she she cared for the children is truly admirable She had a a a a a a a a a a a a a unique ability to make each unit a a a a a a a a a a feel like a a a a a a a a a a home The children have their own memories she was there through the the the happy sad and tough times It is a a a a a a a a testament to to her her that so Page 91
