Fethard Tidy Towns 2010–2014Project 5 – 2014One of the projects for this year was the wall near the new playground at the Cashel road tree park. This was partially completed to enhance the area. The trees planted in the new tree park are now starting to flourish. The colours are very impressive and with the completion of the playground the area is now in regular use and looks beautiful. Work is ongoing in this area of the town. Our town contains some very impressive soft and hard landscaped areas especially at the square. The flower beds enclosed by a box hedgerow are now looking great and we try to maintain these to a high standard .We also cleared areas on the grove road and planted wild flowers in this area. We also set wild flower seeds on the approach roads from Clonmel, Cashel and Killenaule. The committee would like to thank Laurence Kenny for the kind use of his yard in Barrack Street. This has been a great benefit to the town as we now propagate and set our own seeds and shrubs there. We also would like to thank the Henehan family who have giving us kind permission to use the paddocks at the river park beside the town wall. This again will be a great benefit for the setting of plants and we are setting up a harvest water area also. We have also tidied up and enhanced this area which is used by walkers. The town was hit very hard by the recession with a lot of our local small shops not able to survive. With the kind permission of the owner’s art and craft displays were placed in the vacant shop windows which brightened up our town and enlivened the whole main street area.We entered our town in the Tidy Towns Competition 2014 and again we saw a very impressive increase in our results going from 254 in 2013 to 260 in 2014.We were delighted with these results and we have improved every year since starting back in the competition in 2010.Page 20
