Introduction:
This list of Fethard Householders of 1850 has been compiled from the Primary Valuation of Tenements for the Civil Parish of Fethard; a work that is more commonly known as Griffith's Valuation. The local Valuator measured and valued all property in the civil parish between December 1849 and August 1850 for the purpose of having a basis on which rates for the upkeep of the Cashel Poor Law Union could be assessed. This return was the first scientific and accurate assessment of property and housing within the parish and has, therefore, a value above and beyond the genealogical. I have used the civil parish in its entirety rather than the town because the former was generally used in the nineteenth century for official returns and so having it defined could, perhaps, help in other studies.
The Civil Parish of Fethard is divided into eleven townlands of which the townland of Fethard encompasses the town. The townland is the smallest administrative division in the country and has existed since the seventeenth century and, especially in the nineteenth century, was a fundamental in a number of surveys.
The following are the townlands in Fethard's Civil Parish: The Commons (233 acres, 3 roods and 8 perches) which was that area that stretched along the foot of Market Hill; Fethard (533 acres, 2 roods and 35 perches) which lay mainly to the north of the town and included the town; Garrinch (152 acres, 2 roods and 32 perches) which stretched from Garrinch Bridge to the foot of Market Hill and to the left of the Clonmel Road; Gortagea (16 acres, 2 roods and 4 perches) which lay directly south of Spitalfield; part of Grove (219 acres, 3 roods and 19 perches, but not the demesne); Knockboordan (163 acres, 2 roods and 19 perches) which lay between Grove and Knockbrack; Knockbrack (69 acres, 2 roods and 19 perches); Moanbeg (62 acres, 3 roods and 26 perches) which lay between Gortagea and Garrinch; Moanmore (16 acres, 0 roods and 17 perches) which was north of Knockboordan and along the east side of the Grove Road; and Spitalfield (21n acres, 0 roods and 38 perches) which lay to the south side of the Grove Road.
The town of Fethard (in 1850) comprised the following: Main Street which had 80 dwelling-houses and 13 vacant houses; Watergate Street which had 22 dwelling-houses and 3 vacant houses; Moor Street (this was changed to General Thomas Francis Burke Street in 1886) which had 45 dwelling-houses and 7 vacant houses; Abbey Street which had 46 dwelling-houses and 7 vacant houses; The Green which had 97 dwelling-houses and 15 vacant houses; The Rock (which I think is that roadway that lies opposite Kenny's Supermarket and lead to Strylea Housing Estate) which had 23 dwelling-houses and 3 vacant houses; Barrack Street which had 26 dwelling-houses and 3 vacant houses; Coolnamuck (this was, I think, the laneway that led from Barrack Street to the area known as The Back Green) which had 4 dwelling-houses; Sparagalea or Chapel Lane which had 54 dwelling-houses and 16 vacant houses; Old Chapel Lane which had 5 dwelling houses and 4 vacant houses; Kerry Street (in 1850 this appears to have stretched as far as Garrinch Bridge) which had 76 dwelling-houses and 15 vacant houses; Cashel Road which stretched out to the old Railway Station had had 11 dwelling-houses and 2 ruins; Redcity Road which had 4 dwelling-houses and 1 ruins; The Valley which had 71 dwelling-houses and 17 vacant houses; and Jesuits' Walk which had 9 dwelling-houses and 10 vacant houses. Judging from those figures it seems that the civil parish had 18.3 per cent of its housing stock either vacant or in ruins; considering that this was was close to one-fifth of the housing the town must have presented a dilapidated appearance to any observed. The actual housing figures for the civil parish were: 661 houses occupied, 122 houses vacant and 26 in ruins.
I have quoted reference numbers against each name. For example, Ahern, William, Spitalfield, Ref: 70/1b. The 70 refers to the 1840 survey map (Sheet No.: Co. Tipperary, 70) which covers the parish and some of the surrounding civil parishes. The 1b refers to the position, in Spitalfield, of the particular property on the map and also serves as a reference point if the Primary Valuation lists are consulted for the valuations placed on property, which I have not included here.
To help in indentifying householders within the town area I have made use of the following Trade Directories: Pigot's of 1824 (the earliest to mention Fethard); Slater's of 1846, 1856, 1870 and 1894; Guy's Cork Directory of 1893; and The National Directory of 1894. I have used the spelling as given in the Valuation List (for example, Croak would today be spelled as Croke), and where I was not certain of ownership of various plots I have listed each owner even though there may have been duplication the same name. Here and there throughout the list there is reference to ìsmall gardenî. This was a plot of ground which the Valuator considered too small to measure, possibly something under 2 perches. While reading though this list it is worth bearing in mind that there were 40 perches in a rood and 4 roods in an acre.
