Kintyre Peninsula Barn Owl Project
Eleanor O'Riordan, formerly from Kerry Street, Fethard, and now living in Campbeltown, Scotland, sent us this interesting report published on June 3, 2026, by the Kintyre Peninsula Barn Owl Project – a conservation project aimed at Barn owl population and breeding.
"One of the great things about bird ringing is getting a recovery, especially one that’s a bit unexpected. The chick on the left (above photo) was ringed at a site in South Kintyre in July, 2025. It was the fourth youngest chick in a brood of five. On June 3, 2026, We received notification that it had been found in Fethard, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. The owl was a road casualty, however, it has since been released and is back in the wild. Barn Owls do not usually disperse so far after leaving the nest but a few have have headed south into Wales and England."

Died Recently in Dublin
 The death has occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, of Johanna 'Joan' Aherne (née Murphy) Clondalkin, Dublin, and formerly Fethard, peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Naas General Hospital. Pre-deceased by her loving son Patrick. Beloved wife of the late Daniel and much loved mam to Mary, Donal, Rose, Catherine, Paul and Mark. Joan will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her daughters, sons, sons-in-law, Mick, Liam and Dave, daughters-in-law Lorraine, Mandy, Ingrid and Anne, her twelve adored grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Died Recently
 The death has occurred on June 6, 2026, of Pat 'Pop' Barrett, Comeragh Green, Lismore Heights, Waterford City and formerly Fethard. Pat, retired member of An Garda Síochána, predeceased by his father Michael, mother Ellen and sister Goldie Gahan, is much loved husband of Peig and loving father of Greg, Pamela and Anthony. He will be sadly missed by his brothers Michael, John and Frank, grandchildren Emma and Kate, son-in-law David Walsh, Greg's partner Madeline, Anthony's partner Patricia, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Reposing in Tom Hennessy's Funeral Home, 45A Johnstown, Waterford on Friday, June 12, from 7pm to 8.30pm. Requiem Mass takes place on Saturday, June 13, in St. Paul's Church, Lisduggan, Waterford, at 10am, followed by Private Cremation. GAA Sports Development Lotto Results
Fethard GAA Sports Lotto draw results for Tuesday, June 9, 2026, are as follows: the numbers drawn were: 4, 8, 23 and 30. We had no Jackpot winner and two Match 3 winners, Valerie O'Meara & Sean Fleming, who received €75 each. One lucky dip winner Ursula Bradshaw, received €100. The next draw takes place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, when the jackpot is €11,400.

Parish Church Lotto Results
There was no jackpot winner in the Parish Lotto on Thursday, Thursday, June 4, 2026. The numbers drawn were 3, 9, 11, and 16. The winner of the weekly draw for €30 was Olivia Foran. Next week's draw takes place on Thursday, June 11, when the Jackpot is €5,000.

Died Recently in New Zealand
 The death has occurred on Monday 1st June 2026 of John Culligan, Whakatane, North Island, New Zealand and formerly of Clonacody, Fethard. Deeply regretted by his family and friends in Ireland and New Zealand.

Accepted items are: clothing, including uniforms, paired shoes, belts, scarves, ties, hats, bags, handbags, school bags, sports bags, soft toys, bed linen and curtains (bagged separately).

Faces and Places from the Past
This week we feature photographs from our archives that we have little or only some information for and ask your help with supplying missing names or information where possible. I've also used some more photos taken at the Kilcash Fancy Dress, Baby Show at Field Day held on July 25, 1982, that may have a few local faces included. Other names would be much appreciated.

The late Jack Gunne photographed in his blacksmith's forge on The Green, Fethard, in the early 1970s. It was November 23, 1982 when Jack Gunne last worked in his forge which was located in the Lower Green. He remembers the date well because that night he suffered from a stroke. Very little now marks the site where the smithy on the Green shaped shoes for this horse or that with the aid of his hand operated bellows. Jack was the third generation to carry on the family business and while in the latter years of his life he concentrated mainly on shoeing horses, all types of work associated with the blacksmith was undertaken. Indeed Gunne's forge once had the finest set of dies for miles around. Jack's father Iived in the Back Green and his parents were one of the original families to get one of the new eight cottages in The Green. Jack reckons that he was the second child to be born in the new cottages and when asked who was the first he quickly replied 'the late Jimmy Weston! Jack Gunne died on September 11, 1992, aged 78.

Fethard Coursing Club presentation at Sparagoleith. The 1977-78 Coursing season was one of the best ever, and the highlight of the season was the Inter-County meet between Blackrock Club, Cork and Fethard Club held at Derryluskin on February 28, 1978. The Cork Club came in strength, complete with a beautiful perpetual trophy and after a great days coursing in brilliant sunshine, the Blackrock Club were victorious in the final. A very enjoyable day was had by the 200 people or more who turned, all of whom agreed how well organised the meet was. Hearty appetites were appeased by the kind ladies who supplied tea and sandwiches in the I.C.A. Hall. And then the moment of glory! The presentation of the Cup at the Fethard Arms, where music and frivolity were the order of the day. The P.J. Henehan Cup was won by Michael Flanagan. The Tom Carroll Cup was awarded by Jimmy Ryan. The Beaters Cup went to Michael Croke and the Dick Hayes Inter-Club Trophy went to Tony Flanagan.
