The Fethard Historical Society Annual General Meeting took place at 8pm on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 in the ICA Hall, Fethard. The newly elected committee is as follows: Terry Cunningham, Chairman, Michael Mallon, Vice-Chairman, Mary Healy, Hon. Secretary, Patricia Looby, Treasurer, Catherine O’Flynn, Asst. Treasurer, Mary Hanrahan Asst. Secretary/ P.R.O., Sybil Cope, Liam Gleeson, Tim Robinson, Patrick Phelan, Carol Kenny, Caroline McGrath and Cecily Purcell.
Upcoming Events Outing to Kilcooley Abbey on Thurs, May 21, 2026
The Society has organised a guided tour of Kilcooley Abbey with local historian Liam Noonan at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Car pooling at the Town Hall, Main Street, departing Fethard at 6.30pm or you can meet us at Kilcooley Abbey E41 XN61. Cost of guided tour is €12 including tea and scones afterwards in Hogan’s. Poetry Day Ireland May 28, Fethard Town Hall
Come along to celebrate Poetry Day Ireland at 3.30pm on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in the Fethard Horse Country Experience. Join Mary Hanrahan in what has become a much anticipated annual event in Fethard Town Hall. This year’s theme is ‘Home’, a theme that is resonant with meaning on so many different levels. The concept of home is indeed one of the greatest issues and predominant themes of our times. It is also significant as Poetry Ireland officially opened its new national headquarters and cultural hub at No. 11 Parnell Square East, Dublin.
Feel free to interpret the theme as you wish and come along to read a poem written by yourself or a favourite poet. Or just join us for a coffee and enjoy the spoken word in the wonderful ambiance of the historic Fethard Town Hall. All are welcome to this free event and no booking is necessary. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Holy Trinity National School Parents Association are holding a cash for clothes collection fundraiser from May 11, to June 23. Please support by donating unwanted clothing as listed on poster above, which can be dropped off at the school. Alternatively, contact 087 6918183 to arrange a suitable time.
Accepted items are: clothing, including uniforms, paired shoes, belts, scarves, ties, hats, bags, handbags, school bags, sports bags, soft toys, bed linen and curtains (bagged separately).
Unacceptable items are: No Bric a Brac (toys or books), No dirty/wet clothing, No mats/carpets, No single shoes, No pillows/duvets, No cut-off materials, No cushions, No towels, No blankets. Please place your items for recycling in a black bag.

Request for Information on Michael Duggan?
We have a request for information from Mary McCormack, Tipperary Studies, concerning a Michael Duggan who was a deputy rate collector c.1840-1865. Michael was married in Killenaule and he died in 1875. Apparently he was known as 'The Writer' and did work on the Charter King James gave to Fethard and general research on Holy Trinity Church Fethard and the Augustinian Priory. Mary is unable to source further information and would appreciate any leads that might help discover more information on him. Please contact history@fethard.com

The Clonmel Union of Parishes host concerts
The parishioners of Old St. Mary’s Church are delighted to announce that they will host three different concerts over the next few weeks, all with different genres, with something for all musical tastes. The concerts are always very enjoyable and will enable us to raise funds towards the repairs of the church roof over the chancel area and interior work, both of which are major projects. Old St Mary’s Church has built up a fine reputation for hosting concerts and has outstanding acoustics and a wonderful ambience. The Select Vestry continually work very hard to maintain this building for future generations and appreciate any support that the local community can give.
The following concerts will take place:
On Friday May 29, Belle Voci Choir and the Libra String Quartet will come together for a Night of Stage and Screen drawing on the greatest music from Theatre and film. Tickets will be on sale on the night at the door.
On Sunday June 7, we are delighted to welcome back the Clonmel Concert Band for an afternoon concert of well known music which is always very popular. The concert begins at 3pm and will last approximately one hour. Admission is free and there will be a retiring collection for the ongoing work in the church.

Johnny Sheehan - a living link to the past! Johnny Sheehan (101) looking up the 1926 census and finding himself in the records of a very different Ireland.
The 1926 census was officially released in April 2026 by the National Archives of Ireland, exactly 100 years after it was taken. It is the first census carried out after independence and offers a remarkable snapshot of life in the early years of the Irish Free State. For families and local historians, it fills an important gap between the 1911 census and later records.
The records are available free of charge online through the National Archives website. You can search by name, county, townland, age, or occupation, making it easier than ever to trace relatives and neighbours. Once you find a match, you can view the original household return, which lists everyone in the home along with details such as relationships, religion, occupation, and whether they spoke Irish.
For communities like Fethard and Killusty, the census provides a valuable window into the past — showing households, farms, and familiar family names as they were a century ago. As Johnny reminds us, it’s not just history on paper — it’s living memory, still within reach.
