It’s a Long Way From Tipperary … to PRIA
Professor Pat Guiry, a former student of Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School, presents his Presidential Discourse to mark the end of his three-year term as President of the Royal Irish Academy. This Discourse was chaired by Academy Secretary Daniel Carey MRIA. This discourse reflects on a career path that started in Co. Tipperary and ended up with Professor Guiry’s election as the 58th President of the Royal Irish Academy in March 2023.
It reflects on the role of his alma mater, UCD (BSc and PhD), and the people who helped his career there and elsewhere. There are some chemistry highlights from his research group, focusing on synthetic organic chemistry. Also featured are selected events and memories from his time as PRIA, including the excellent people he has been fortunate to have worked with. The importance of other aspects of his career, such as his involvement in sport and with the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition are also discussed.

Fethard U16s Reflect on Successful 2026 Season

Fethard Rugby Club Ladies U16s have brought their 2026 season to a close following a campaign that started with pre-season last August through to a strong finish in the Munster Plate.
A pre-season outing against Richmond provided valuable preparation ahead of the league, which began in late October. Drawn in Group 1, Fethard faced strong opposition in Dolphin, Cobh and Dungarvan/Waterpark, ultimately topping the group in December after a series of competitive performances.
A challenge match against Bruff in January set the tone for the knockout stages, where Fethard progressed past Bantry/Skibbereen in the quarter finals to reach the Munster League semi-final. Despite leading Clonakilty 12–10 at half-time, the West Cork side pulled away in the second half and went on to claim the title.

Attention then turned to the Munster Cup, where victories over Ballincollig and Shannon saw Fethard reach the Plate semi-final. A determined display secured a narrow win over Ennis, setting up a final meeting with Ballincollig. In an impressive performance, Fethard produced a 29–19 victory to claim silverware and cap off their season in style.

This year marked significant development for the squad, with many players stepping up from U14 level and adapting superbly to the demands of contested scrums and lineouts. Grace Keena and Charlotte Deegan were recognised at provincial level, representing the Munster development squads against Connacht, while several players also enjoyed successes with their schools at various Munster schools competitions
The club extends sincere thanks to the wider community and the many parishes that make up the team. Special appreciation goes to all our sponsors, particularly Daltons Pharmacy for their generous support in providing a new set of jerseys this season. We are especially grateful to the parents and families whose commitment, time and encouragement make everything possible, and to the club committee whose ongoing support underpins the success of the group.

Best wishes are extended to the players moving to U18.5 level next season, and we look forward to seeing their continued progress in the years ahead. The squad will remain active over the summer with fun, recreational touch rugby sessions, new players are always welcome, no experience necessary. Parish Church Lotto Draw Results
There was no jackpot winner in the Parish Lotto on Thursday, April 2, 2026. The numbers drawn were 3, 7, 14, and 19. The winner of the weekly draw for €30 was Pamela O'Donnell. Next week's draw takes place on Thursday, April 9, when the Jackpot is €5,000.

Fethard GAA Club is proud to announce the presentation of their annual €1,000 sporting scholarship to Fethard Patrician Secondary School, supporting the school’s ongoing commitment to developing young sporting athletes and promoting participation in sport at all levels.
The cheque was officially presented by Willie Morgan, Fethard GAA Club Chairperson, at the school on Friday morning March 27, 2026. The scholarship forms part of the club’s ongoing commitment in supporting the school while also continuing efforts in youth development and strengthen its partnership with the local community.
Fethard has a great tradition in GAA and it always places a strong focus on youth development within the club. We are delighted to support the school through this scholarship, which will help students access sporting opportunities and encourage the next generation of players to reach their full potential.
The €1,000 scholarship will be used for bursaries for incoming 1st year students in September who demonstrate outstanding ability in sport and the arts.
Fethard GAA Club extends its best wishes to all students participating in school and club activities in the year ahead and looks forward to continued collaboration with the school to promote sporting excellence and community spirit.
Tom Barry Memorial Tractor Run
Tom Barry was originally from Tullamaine, Fethard, and as we approach Tom's first anniversary, a Tractor Run is being organised in Clerihan on Sunday, April 26, in aid of the Cancer Care Support Centre in Clonmel, which provides support to those affected by cancer in South Tipperary. The C.A.R.E team are fantastic and we want to honour them in memory of our beloved Tom. All vintage vehicles are welcome!
GAA Sports Development Lotto Results
Fethard GAA Sports Lotto draw results for Tuesday, March 31, 2026, are as follows: the numbers drawn were: 2, 8, 23 and 29. We had no Jackpot winner and no Match 3 winner. One lucky dip winner received €100: Karol Maher. The next draw takes place on Tuesday, April 7, 2025, when the jackpot is €9,400.

Roger is formerly from Fethard and was very active in the community when he lived here. He played with the under-age Munster and County winning GAA football team and Athletic Club. Fethard's Community Café outstanding success Fethard Community Café staff and volunteers who provide a fantastic service since opening on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Opening hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm. All are welcome.
Fethard & Killusty Community Council has been absolutely blown away by the support received for our new Community Café, since opening our doors Wednesday, March 18, 2026. We would like to thank all our supporters and volunteers for their support. The Community Cafe project was undertaken after various consultations with other community groups and the Public Participation Network (PPN) that allows local authorities to connect with community groups.
All proceeds from the project will go towards Fethard & Killusty Community Council's various activities to promote Fethard town as a friendly and inviting place to live, and visit, with a caring community supported by a vibrant and sustainable economy built on its local resources. Everyone involved has been so generous with their time, and the atmosphere since we opened has been nothing short of amazing. We hope to see you all again as we slowly extend our services to meet the growing demand. Opening hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm. All are welcome.
'Yellow Forget Me Not' ribbons for Easter As most of you are aware, every Christmas we sell 'Red Remembrance Ribbons' to remember our deceased loved ones over Christmas. Last year we started selling 'Yellow Forget Me Not' ribbons for Easter which was very successful. So this year you can buy an Easter ribbon, and put the name of a deceased loved one you would like to remember over Easter. The ribbons will be hung on the Parish Church railings and will be blessed on Easter Sunday morning.
Annette O'Donovan will be out and about selling the ribbons from this weekend, and Every ribbon we sell carries more than just a donation — it carries a message. The funds raised from the Christmas Red Ribbons and the Yellow Ribbons are given to members of our community who are facing illness or undergoing treatment. While the financial support can help, it’s not the amount that matters most. What truly matters is the reminder that they are not alone, and that they are in our thoughts, remembered, and supported during a difficult time. Thank you for helping us show that kindness, one ribbon at a time.

Opening meet of the Tipperary Foxhounds on Main Street, Fethard, which shows the former site of Aillied Irish Banks in the background. .The Munster & Leinster Bank branch in Fethard, which was built in 1895 became part of the newly formed Allied Irish Banks Limited entity during that time. Allied Irish Banks (AIB) was formed by the amalgamation of the Munster & Leinster Bank, the Provincial Bank of Ireland, and the Royal Bank of Ireland in September 1966.
