Fethard exit County U15 ‘A’ Football Semifinal amid confusion
On Sunday last, May 25, in the County U15 A Football Semi Final played in Cashel ended amid confusion at the end of normal time, over a 2-pointer scored in the sixteenth minute, when Fethard supporter’s scores tally recorded a win by one point, which differed from the referee’s tally, who recorded a draw, Fethard 2-10, to Boherlahan 1-13. The confusion may have been caused by umpires not having orange flags to depict the correct score.
The match went to extra time. As Fethard players were wearing yellow jerseys, the referee asked after the interval, that the Boherlahan goalie – who was wearing the same colour –instructed their officials to put a green bib over his yellow jersey before he restarted the game.
Adding to the confusion, was Fethard played against a strong wind in the opening half and excelled in containing the Boherlahan attack to 0-8 (which included 1 two-pointer). Fethard’s counter attacks included our best player, Daniel Gleeson, scoring three great points; followed by a gem of a goal, when Adam McGarry kicked a great ball over the Boherlahan defence, leaving their goalie fumble the ball, where Dean Moloney was on hand to score a goal in the fifteenth minute.
Thomas O’Rahilly was fantastic in goal saving two point-blank goal bound shots, and a penalty that went wide. During the second half, with the wind in our backs, we struggled to get advantage in the third quarter. The only bright spot was a great goal from the middle of the field kicked by Pa Coffey, who also pointed a free, followed by a point from a free scored by Harry Walsh. Boherlahan added four points to leave the score at the end of the third quarter, Boherlahan 0-12, to Fethard’s 2-5.
We were then dealt a blow when Dean Moloney was black-carded. Our team excelled for ten-minutes, commencing with a great two-pointer from Pa Coffey, followed by two Harry Walsh frees, and a great Aaron Allen point from play. Boherlahan just scored a sole point in that period, leaving the score Fethard 2-10, to Boherlahan 0-13.
As we entered injury time, Daniel Gleeson made a terrific run to score a point leaving Fethard, as we thought, four points up. Then, in the final play, a bundled goal scored by Boherlahan, ended the game in a draw. Our team had given their best and were very weary in extra time. Boherlahan scored 1-6 without reply, hence they advanced to meet Newport in the county final. Fethard’s stand out players were: Thomas O’Rahilly, Billy Hayes, Daniel Gleeson, Conor Prendergast, Pa Coffey, and Aaron Allen.
Fethard team and scorers: Thomas O’Rahilly, Dylan Lacy, Billy Hayes, Zach Ward, Daniel Gleeson 0-4, Joe Purcell, Adam O’Donnell, Conor Prendergast, Pa Coffey 1-3 (1 two-pointer, 1F), Jake Daniel, Harry Walsh 0-3 F, Adam McGarry, Ewan Byrne, Aaron Allen 0-1, and Dean Moloney. Subs were: Eoghan Neville, Harry Ahearne, Gavin Tyrell, Jimmy Higgins, Rory O’Brien, Emre Cicek, and Gus Purcell. Management team: Damien Byrne, Perry Daniel, Conor McCarthy, Edmond Sheehan, and Frannie Tyrell.
The U15 C Football County League semifinal took place on Tuesday, May 27, and finished on a scoreline: Clonmel Og: 8-10, Fethard 1-8. – (Noel Byrne)

Creative Gardening Day in the sunshine Making a 'Hugelkulture' bed at the Creative Gardening Day in the sunshine by Fethard Towm Wall
Fethard Tidy Towns hosted a 'Creative gardening day' at the River garden on Saturday 10th May, which was a free event open to everyone to join in. The morning saw the creation of a 'Hugelkulture' bed, which is a bit like a lasagne! composed of a log base, then a middle of manure and a top layer of topsoil. This creates superb soil conditions so that the plants may thrive over a long period and in addition they should not need watering, as the timber acts like a giant sponge as it slowly decomposes.

In the afternoon, children and families amongst others helped to plant and sow a mix of herbs and dye plants, helping to forge a link between our present day and our mediaeval past.
Callie sowing seeds for the future.
Fethard Tidy towns warmly welcomes any help and new members of all ages. From this Thursday we plan to meet at 7.30 (Ballroom carpark) to do an hours gardening in the valley; on other Thursdays we will garden in different areas of the town. This project has received funding as part of the Creative Ireland programme with support from Tipperary County Council

School celebrates its 25 nationalities
Multicultural Day was celebrated in style at the Presentation Primary School in Clonmel on April 24, 2015. Pupils and staff came to school in national costume or national colours, with many proudly carrying scarves and flags to represent the 25 countries they call home.
Some of the Irish pupils chose to wear the colours of an adopted country. The classrooms and play- grounds were a riot of colour, with many creative designs and patterns. Hats, scarves jewellery and head pieces added to the display as did some very unusual accessories such as an Australian cork hat, a didgeridoo and flamenco shoes.
The Presentation School was delighted with the response of parents, many of whom visited the school to talk about their home country and its similarities and differences to Ireland. Pupils listened in amazement to tales of picking bananas, coconuts, peppercorns and tea or making clay diya lamps for the four-day festival of Diwali in India.
Pupils were fascinated by the thoughts of translucent white lizards and stealthy snakes in Brazil. Some groaned in envy at the information that winter temperatures in Argentina can reach 17 degrees Celsius. Visiting parents kindly explained the significance of particular items of clothing jewellery and body art. Some taught songs or a dance. Many brought food, and mouth-watering aromas wafted around the corridors as pupils and staff happily sampled savoury and sweet treats.
Music and song echoed through the classrooms as teachers taught lessons with a difference. Pupils sang Freres Jacques and danced and laughed their way through the Mexican Hat Dance and an Australian Bush Dance. Artists created intricate henna hand designs and made origami hearts. Many pupils had been busy in the kitchen the previous evening, making traditional dishes including Irish stew, rosó (chicken noodle soup) from Poland, samosas and rice dishes from Pakistan and India, kaiserschmarrn (thick pan cakes) from Germany and sweet puff puffs from Nigeria.
This wonderful Multicultural Day was the highlight of an annual Presentation project called Challenge to Change, which this year (2015) aimed to promote respect.

The entrance to the Sports Centre was the original front entrance to Fethard Barracks on The Square, believed at that time to be the original home of the Everard family. It was later revealed that the Military Barracks in Fethard was one of the oldest in the country. It was built on the site of the original Everard Mansion House which fell into decay c.1740 while Sir Redmond Everard (the last Baronet) lived abroad in France.
In 1752, Thomas Barton of Bordeaux purchased the Everard estate in Fethard, demolished the old Mansion House and erected a new one on the same spot. The Barton Mansion House was acquired in 1797 and converted into a temporary military barracks, lighted by oil, and used to accommodate two troops of Cavalry. It was converted into proper military barracks in 1805.
