Robert Prevost was born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, and spent the early part of his career there working for the Augustinians. On June 29, 2005, members of the Augustinian Community, together with the General of the Augustinian Order, Fr Robert Prevost; attended a special Chapter Mass in Fethard Abbey celebrating 700 Years, one of the oldest functioning churches in Ireland.

The largest gathering ever of Augustinians took place in Fethard Abbey on Wednesday evening, June 29, 2005, when over 70 friars broke from their week-long Province Chapter being held at Limerick University and visited Fethard with the General of the Augustinian Order, Fr Robert Prevost, originally from Canada and now based at St. Monica’s Curia, Rome. Chapters are held every four years to deliberate the life and work of the Irish Augustinians here in Ireland and in their overseas missions in Nigeria, Kenya, Ecuador and friars also working in USA. Canada, Australia and England. The Augustinians were also celebrating 700 years in Fethard.

 The death has occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025, of Phyllis Wall (née O'Grady), Fr Tirry Park, Fethard and formerly of Ballinard, peacefully at Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel, surrounded by her loving family. Pre-deceased by her husband Tommy, her brothers Michael and Dick and her sisters Mary, Biddy and Peg. She will be deeply regretted and sadly missed by her daughter May, grand daughter Bernadette and her husband Simon, grandson Michael, great grandchildren Tia, Eoin and Billy, relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Lisa Condon, Pamela Sweeney, Judy Hayes, Dr Carmel Condon and Fr Liam Everard for their friendship and support for Phyllis.

Michael passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family in the exceptional care of Melview Nursing Home. Predeceased by his bothers Tony and David. Survived by his loving wife Noreen, adored father of Ellen. Much loved Grandad of Michael and Lily and father-in-law of Dave. Deeply mourned by his sisters Monica (Anglim), Sr. Gretta and Eileen (O’Keeffe) and his brothers Pat, Austin and Vincent. Sadly missed by his sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

GAA Sports Development Lotto Results
Fethard GAA Sports Lotto draw results for May 6, 2025, are as follows: the numbers drawn were: 5, 20, 22 and 23. We had no Jackpot winner and one Match 3 winner who received €150 each: Rena Sheehan. One' lucky dip winner received €100: Frannie Tyrell. The next draw takes place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, when the jackpot is €30,000.

Self Defence Classes for young girls and women will commence at the Convent Community Hall, Lower Main Street, on Monday, May 12, with a Level 1 Introduction to Self-Defence Workshop. Booking is essential. Contact Jillian at Tel: 086 8482150 for details.
Level 1 Introduction to Self-Defence Workshop will include an introduction to self-defence covering awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, how to protect your personal space and basic physical tips for self-defence.
Level 2 self-defence workshop will include release from common grabs choke holds, methods to escape ground attacks, and potential sexual assaults.
Classes are for young girls and women only, taught by a female instructor, booking is essential as only small groups are taken for instruction.

 The death has occurred on Sunday, May 4, 2025, of Peg Sharpe (née Dooley), St Patrick's Place, Fethard, peacefully in Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel, surrounded by her loving family. Pre-deceased by her husband Bill and her infant children William and James. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Mary and Una and her son Noel, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Tipperary University Hospital and the staff of Sonas Nursing Home , Melview, Clonmel, for their care of Peg in her final days.

Tom passed away peacefully at his residence, surrounded by his family following an illness borne with dignity and grace. Fethard crowned South Champions after beating Commercials in the South U15 A Football Final
Huge congratulations to Fethard GAA Club U15 Footballers who tonight delivered a performance well beyond their years & in doing so were crowned South Tipperary Juvenile GAA Champions in a thriller against an excellent Commercials team in a rip-roaring game that had all that is good about the game from start to finish.
On Thursday last, May 1, before a great Fethard support for our young footballers in Ardfinnan, Fethard played brilliant Football for the full sixty minutes against a strong Clonmel Commercials team, to win the South U15 A South Final on a scoreline 2-10 to 0-13. This was our first success in this Grade since 1969. The U14 A section was operational from 1971 to 2023, and our last win in U14 A was in 1994. Congratulations again to all involved.
In the first quarter of the game it was all Level at 1-02, a goal from a penalty by Pa Coffey, and points from Ewan Byrne and a Harry Walsh free, to Commercials 0-5. In the second quarter, Fethard upped the ante with Daniel Gleeson scoring a magnificent 3 points from play. Conor Prendergast added a goal, to Commercials 3 points, leaving us 2-5 to 0-8 ahead at the break.
With all to play for in the second half, our team stepped up to the challenge head on, with attack after attack. With scores from Ewan Byrne, Dean Moloney, Daniel Gleeson and Pa Coffey, all points from play. The final score of the game was a point from a free from the boot of Pa Coffey. Commercials were only allowed to score 5 points in this period.

On this display, all 16 that participated on the night must be complimented the way they stuck to their task, with run after run up the field, this was a great result for ‘The Blues’.

There were scenes of great excitement in Fethard on Friday evening when the under-15 juvenile footballers returned home with the County Juvenile Championship trophy won at Cashel, where Moycarkey provided only token opposition.
Fethard gave an outstanding display at bright open football and having led by 5-4 to 0-1 at the interval want on to add a further 4-4 without reply, leaving the final score: Fethard 9-8; Moycarkey 0-1. This was the first time in thirty-nine years that a county juvenile title came to Fethard and it is quite a coincidence that the recipient of the trophy on last Friday evening, Fethard's Michael Kenrick, is son of Jack Kenrick, the man who led the successful side in 1930.
Fethard advanced to meet Arravale Rovers, the urban-rural champions, in the final of Turas na nOg competition and had a four-point winning margin at the final whistle. This victory brought to the Fethard boys the twenty tickets for the All-Ireland football final in Croke Park awarded each year by the Tipp County Board for this competition. Congratulations to the team and their mentors on their win and indeed on their many fine victories throughout year.

Poetry Day Ireland was celebrated once again in the Fethard Horse Country Experience, Main Street Fethard on Thursday, May 1, Mary Hanrahan, Fethard Historical Society, opened the proceedings,
“We have marked Poetry Day Ireland here in the Town Hall since the museum first opened in 2017. This year we come together to celebrate the theme May Day. As always, people are free to interpret that theme as they see fit or, indeed, simply choose to share a favourite poem.” she said. “I would like to thank Olga, Dale and Michelle, the staff here in the Fethard Horse Country Experience, who always make us so welcome. I really appreciate their ongoing support for this annual event. It is always wonderful to celebrate the spoken word in this very special historic building.”

In Ireland, as the midpoint between the Spring and Autumn equinox, May Day is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, including the fire festival of Bealtaine, which celebrates renewal, hope and abundance. May Day is also recognised globally as International Worker’s Day, a time for reflection on solidarity, unity and collective strength. Poetry Ireland chose twelve poems, nine in English, three as Ghaeilge, to be showcased as part of Poetry Day Ireland 2025 and they can be accessed on www.poetryireland.ie

Having welcomed everyone, including visitors from Cahir, Canada and points in between, Mary began by reading one of those poems, Hawthorn, which recalls a rural Connemara of days gone by and references the customs of the time. A number of lyrical pieces paid tribute to the beauty of nature including May Morning by Michael Walsh, May Day by Sarah Teasdale and To The Cuckoo by William Wordsworth. Michael Croome Carroll injected a welcome note of humour with Mary Oliver’s Such Silence followed by her whimsical Angels and the wonderfully inspirational I’m Not The River.
Michael Mallon who read Springtime by the late Fr. Brian Power
Michael Mallon read Springtime by the late Fr. Brian Power, a poem written in 2003 whose lines proved eerily apposite for the strange times in which we now live:
It is the springtime
when kings and presidents go to war…
It is the Springtime
when wounded children fight to go on living.
“In religious terms, the first of May traditionally marked the beginning of the celebration of May as the month of Mary.” observed Mary Hanrahan, “Thinking of Mary inevitably invokes motherhood, the theme of the following poems Mermaid and Ordinary Love, both written by Kerry poet Mary Kennelly.” Mother love was also depicted in Thank You, another of the Poetry Day Ireland Poster Poems. Fatherhood proved a popular theme too as referenced in Pull, Granddad, Pull by Michael Walsh and the very poignant The Empty Nest by Terry Cunningham.
Ann Walsh reprised her role from last year and entertained everyone by demonstrating the wonders of ChatGPT - simply by submitting a few words about Fethard, she suddenly had a series of suitably rhymed verses extolling the virtues of the medieval town. While impressed, the gathering still expressed the opinion that ‘real’ writers will continue to outshine their AI competitors. Rose Dougliss read a selection of reflections from A Little Book of Poetry by Athey Thompson, which, as she herself said, could be interpreted in different ways according to one’s own beliefs.
The traditional lyrics of You’re as Welcome as The Flowers in May gave a nostalgic nod to songs of the past and the always hoped for return of the emigrant. Mary Hanrahan then read one of her own poems Throwing Shapes, a portrayal of the different aspects of womanhood.
Local poet Terry Cunningham, a long time supporter of this Poetry Day Ireland event, shared his own writings, the humorous The Man Who Did Everything and the evocative The Birds Knew Me Back Then. Newcomer John Walsh read Unforgotten, a touching tribute to steadfast love by Robert Service.

Before the event concluded Michael Mallon, Fethard Historical Society, took the floor to speak.
“I would like to say a special word of thanks to Mary Hanrahan for the guidance, dedication, inspiration and joy that she brings to our annual poetry event in Fethard, a cherished part of our Poetry Day Ireland get-together.”
Joe Walsh read the final poem of the afternoon The Summer Day by Mary Oliver, leaving everyone with the challenging thought:
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”
Joint Art Exhibition opens at Clonmel Library
'Fresh as Paint' is a joint art exhibition open until May 10, at Clonmel Library featuring work by the following artists: Cecily Purcell, Eugene de Leastar, Millie Philippa, Rosemary Ponsonby, Silvia Tilli, Sisko Raulo, Sophie Carpentieri, and Tim Corballis. Fethard Town Park Car Park Important Notice
Important Notice for users of Fethard Town Park's Car Park. As from Thursday, May 1, the Car Park at Fethard Town Park will be locked with our recently installed barrier, every night at 10pm and reopen again on the following morning at 6am.
Nationwide Rosary
On Saturday May 10, thousands of Catholics across Ireland will gather in their local communities to participate in Rosary Rallies as part of the world’s largest Rosary Rally Crusade. The initiative is sponsored by Ireland Needs Fatima, a campaign of the Irish Society for Christian Civilisation, and has been held annually since 2013 on the Saturday closest to May 13, the anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima’s first apparition.
These Rosary Rallies are a powerful proclamation of faith in a secular world and a direct response to Our Lady’s request at Fatima to “Pray the Rosary every day in order to obtain peace for the world.”
The local site is Our Lady of Fatima Grotto, in The Abbey Grounds, at 4pm. We appeal to all to join us for Rosary, Prayer Intentions & Hymns etc. We are just one of almost 600 sites nationwide.

Legion of Mary Rosary Programme for May
The Legion of Mary Rosary Programme for the month of May is as follows:
- May 1st – The Parish Church Grotto and on each Tuesday & Thursday at 7pm.
- May 5th – Killusty Grotto and on each Monday at 8pm.
Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to pray the Rosary during the month of May, ‘When the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary’. All are welcome to join in praying the Rosary with us during the month.
Fethard just about account for Clonmel Og in Round 2 of the U19 A Football
On Wednesday last, April 30, Round 2 of the U19 A Football was played in Monroe with Fethard dominating the first half on a lovely Spring evening. scoring 3 goals in five minutes and leading 3-1 to 0-2 after 15 minutes, with scores from Mark Neville 1-0, Charlie Walsh 2-1.
In the second fifteen minutes Mark Neville scored 0-3 (2F), with a 45 taken by Ben Allen in the final minute of the half punched to the net by Charlie Walsh, giving him a hat trick before the short whistle. With the score 4-4 to 1-4, and the wides tally, Fethard 4, Clonmel Og 2. After the break, Clonmel Og first attack scored a goal and our goalie went down injured in the 34th minute. Alex Knightly went in between the posts and Criostóir Sheehy came on as a sub, Mark stretched our lead with a point from a free and when Jack Davey added a point from a quickly taken 45. Fethard led 4-6 to 2-4 before the end of the third quarter. We added 2 points, 1 from Charlie Walsh the second from Criostóir Sheehy.
By the 50th minute we had a lead of 4-9 to 2-6. Gavin Neville scored a point from play and in the last 7-8 minutes the game nearly fell apart for our team when Clonmel Og substitutions came to life scoring 2-2 just before they were reduced to 13 players when the first red card and a second black card was issued. Mark Neville then came to the rescue with a pointed free leaving just 2 between the sides. The final score was Fethard 4-10 to Clonmel Og 4-8.

School celebrates its 25 nationalities
Multicultural Day was celebrated in style at the Presentation Primary School in Clonmel on April 24, 2015. Pupils and staff came to school in national costume or national colours, with many proudly carrying scarves and flags to represent the 25 countries they call home.
Some of the Irish pupils chose to wear the colours of an adopted country. The classrooms and play- grounds were a riot of colour, with many creative designs and patterns. Hats, scarves jewellery and head pieces added to the display as did some very unusual accessories such as an Australian cork hat, a didgeridoo and flamenco shoes.
The Presentation School was delighted with the response of parents, many of whom visited the school to talk about their home country and its similarities and differences to Ireland. Pupils listened in amazement to tales of picking bananas, coconuts, peppercorns and tea or making clay diya lamps for the four-day festival of Diwali in India.
Pupils were fascinated by the thoughts of translucent white lizards and stealthy snakes in Brazil. Some groaned in envy at the information that winter temperatures in Argentina can reach 17 degrees Celsius. Visiting parents kindly explained the significance of particular items of clothing jewellery and body art. Some taught songs or a dance. Many brought food, and mouth-watering aromas wafted around the corridors as pupils and staff happily sampled savoury and sweet treats.
Music and song echoed through the classrooms as teachers taught lessons with a difference. Pupils sang Freres Jacques and danced and laughed their way through the Mexican Hat Dance and an Australian Bush Dance. Artists created intricate henna hand designs and made origami hearts. Many pupils had been busy in the kitchen the previous evening, making traditional dishes including Irish stew, rosó (chicken noodle soup) from Poland, samosas and rice dishes from Pakistan and India, kaiserschmarrn (thick pan cakes) from Germany and sweet puff puffs from Nigeria.
This wonderful Multicultural Day was the highlight of an annual Presentation project called Challenge to Change, which this year (2015) aimed to promote respect.

The entrance to the Sports Centre was the original front entrance to Fethard Barracks on The Square, believed at that time to be the original home of the Everard family. It was later revealed that the Military Barracks in Fethard was one of the oldest in the country. It was built on the site of the original Everard Mansion House which fell into decay c.1740 while Sir Redmond Everard (the last Baronet) lived abroad in France.
In 1752, Thomas Barton of Bordeaux purchased the Everard estate in Fethard, demolished the old Mansion House and erected a new one on the same spot. The Barton Mansion House was acquired in 1797 and converted into a temporary military barracks, lighted by oil, and used to accommodate two troops of Cavalry. It was converted into proper military barracks in 1805.
