Message from Nicosia-Cyprus
Colette Ni Reamonn Ioannidou contacted us to say her newsletter arrived in Cyprus on January 8, 2025, with the following note:
"Dear Joe and team, with all my heart I thank you for the Newsletter, there is so much to enjoy and absorb. I thank you for including the piece on my mother Bridgid, it brought tears to my eyes to see her there. I so look forward to getting stuck in. Please tell John Fogarty he is a fine writer, with the ability to extract the essence from the ether that frames atmosphere, hold it and share it. The quality of writing in the Newsletter is very high. I've been involved in writing articles, features, and columns for papers here over years and love the craft.
I wish you all and the whole of Co. Tipp every best wish for 2025. All the blessings you all desire. My daughter had a problem with her car recently and stopped on a layby. A young Cypriot man stopped to ask if she needed help. Cypriots are very much like the Irish in that respect. Shared history along with it. Be well and content."

Local resident concerned about sale of Fethard Mart site

A local resident has expressed concern about the 1.2 acre site for sale off The Square in Fethard, stating that over half of this site is surrounded by well preserved, Norman town walls. The first records of the walls date back as far as 1292.
The walls and the site in question feature so much history: it includes a tower (constructed in the late 1500s) from which Cromwell was sighted as he advanced towards the town. The site was part of the Everard family home from the 1400s to the 1700s. Sir John Everard (1550 - 1624) served as a lawyer to the Earl of Ormond from the 1590s/early 1600s. Much of the layout of the town as we know it today was his vision - he is responsible for building the Tholsel and developing Main Street. It also used to be the site of the British Barracks that existed from the late 1700s until its destruction during the Civil War.
Fethard features the second best preserved town walls in Ireland after Derry - thanks to great local effort throughout the years. They are the pride of our town. However, so much of the walls have been lost since the late 1800s and throughout the 20th century - as well as many of our medieval buildings. I would encourage the state to consider purchasing this site and turning it into a historic town park. This would provide a wonderful amenity for the people of Fethard. It may also help to make Fethard and indeed South Tipperary an even more desirable destination for those with a passion for Irish heritage. Consider how the preservation of history benefits both Cashel and Cahir culturally and economically. They are Tipperary's historic centres - Fethard has this very same potential.
Now is a chance for the state to preserve a vital part of both our local and national history. Just to note, I have contacted the OPW about this and await a phone call to be arranged.
If you know of anyone else I should contact regarding this or have any recommendations, I would very much appreciate it. Kind regards, Cathal Maher

Looking at the gate and steps . . . could it possibly be girls working in Fethard Laundry at Lower Main Street?

Fethard Laundry; family, steam, hand, and commercial; also workroom in connection with laundry; shirt manufacturing a speciality; conducted by the Sisters of the Presentation Convent. The following information was recorded by the late Michael O'Donnell, Owning, gathered from his father's memories, while living at their home in Kilnockin.
"Fethard Laundry was in the large building on the west side of the entrance to the parish church on the Main Street. Originally the building had been the parish priest’s residence. The laundry on was the ground floor and the upper floor or floors rented by the Patrician Brothers and used as a secondary school from September 1, 1941, until they built the new secondary school at Sparagoleith, which was opened on October 3, 1946.
According to my father many women worked at the laundry; at the beginning of the twentieth century the weekly wage was two shillings and sixpence. He could not recall shirts ever having been made at the laundry, but according to a 1913 advertisement the laundry made underwear and shirts."
