Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland Members of Fethard Choral Group taking part in the Christmas Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland on Sunday last. L to R: Geraldine McCarthy, Susanna Manton, Fionnuala O’Sullivan, Anita Maguire, and Marie Murphy.
Holy Trinity Church of Ireland was overflowing with festive cheer and good fellowship at the annual Carol Service on Sunday, December 22. A packed congregation of over 230 people mostly made up of people from the local community came along to sing Christmas carols, listen to music, hear the readings, and enjoy hospitality laid on by the parishioners. The church was adorned with candles, cones and seasonal greenery which befitted the ambience of the Medieval Church.
The service was due to be taken by Heidi Good from Kilkenny but unfortunately, she proved positive in a Covid test that afternoon, so we greatly appreciated that her father stepped in at the last moment to lead the service.
The congregation were delighted that the Strappe family of traditional musicians, came along to perform a combination of Christmas carols and songs which had some of the congregation singing along. Fethard Choral Society with musical director Ann Barry were also present, and sang beautiful renditions of the Little Drummer Boy, God’s Gift at Christmas and O Holy Night, with soloists Anita Maguire and Paul Hayes. We also welcomed young cellist Fiona Barry who played Once in Royal David’s City accompanied by her mother Ann on the keyboard.
Fifteen-year-old James Clooney (right) organist at the Christmas Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland pictured with his father Stuart Clooney, local piano tutor.
The opening music of Handel’s Largo, and all the carols sung by the whole congregation were played on the 150-year-old church organ by fifteen-year-old James Clooney. James, son of local piano tutor, Stuart Clooney, has only taken up playing the church organ in the last couple of years, and this is the first time he has played at our carol service. His playing was very much enjoyed by those who attended.
The evening finished with refreshments of tea, coffee, sandwiches, mince pies, gingerbread men, buns and Heather Bailey’s very popular coffee cake. A wonderful evening in a beautiful church with great acoustics very suited to a Christmas celebration of the Birth of Jesus.
