U19 A Football South Semifinal Fethard v Moyle Rovers match report
On Wednesday, September 4, we were served up with a thrilling South U19 A Football semifinal in Ned Hall Park, where both teams, Fethard and Moyle Rovers gave it everything from heart-stopping courage, thrills, misses, great runs and brilliant scores. After 36 minutes play in the second half, Ballyporeen referee, Sean Lonergan, blew the final whistle after Moyle Rovers fluffed their final free from 50 metres out that would have brought the game to extra time. Fethard ended up winners by a single point and will now play the winners of Kilsheelan and Commercials.
The game play . . .
Within the first minute, Moyle Rovers had scored a point from play. Fethard team settled into the game scoring two points from frees by Charlie Walsh and Matt Coen. Moyle Rovers attacked and tapped in a goal by the end of the first quarter. Fethard were back level with two points – one from play by Gavin Neville after a great run, and the second from a free by Matt Coen.
Both teams missed 45s within two minutes. Fethard drove on in charge during this quarter, scoring two points from Matt Coen (1 free), Charlie Hackett scored a point from play, followed by an excellent goal from Jack Quinlan after a brilliant run from John Lacey. Moyle Rovers replied with a point from a free, leaving the score at the short whistle, Fethard 1-7, Moyle Rovers 1-2. Fethard’s wide tally was 5 to 2.
On resumption, our first attack from Matt Coen at point blank range was saved by the goalie and on the rebound, Jack Quinlan struck the upright on the counterattack. Moyle Rovers scored a point after five minutes. The ‘score of the match’ was from Charlie Hackett, when starting on our goal line, made his whole way up the field, and following a ‘one two’ exchange with Matt Coen, kicked an excellent point making it 1-8 to 1-3 by the end of the third quarter.
Moyle Rovers closed the gap scoring three points, and Fethard added two from a Matt Coen free and one from play by Jack Quinlan, leaving the score, Fethard 1-10, Moyle Rovers 1-6. At this stage Alec Knightly came on for an injured Jack Stokes. During the following 10 minutes, Moyle Rovers roared into the game with attack after attack, and added 1-2 leaving the score one up, Moyle Rovers 2-8, Fethard 1-10. Fethard pulled out all the stops to curtail this onslaught with points from Jack Quinlan, and two from Matt Coen, one from play, to lead by two. As we entered extra time, Moyle Rovers scored from a free, leaving their final attack squandered, and Fethard the victors by one point: Fethard 1-13, Moyle Rovers 2-9.
Best for Fethard on the night were: Michael J. Phelan, Charlie Hackett, Noah O’Flynn, Liam Kiely Andrew Connorton, Matt Coen and Jack Quinlan.
Team and scorers: Ben Allen, Jack Stokes, Michael J. Phelan, Ronan O’Mahony, Charlie Hackett (0-2), Noah O’Flynn, Liam Kiely , Gavin Neville (0-1), John Lacey, Matt Coen 0-8 (5f), Jack Davey, Charlie Walsh (0-1 f), Jack Quinlan (1-2), and Danny Barry. Subs used: Alec Knightly for Jack Stokes, other subs: James Barry, and Sam Coen. –(Noel Byrne)
Fethard bow out of County Intermediate Football Championship
On Sunday, September 1, Fethard bowed out of the Intermediate Football Championship when Thurles Sarsfields scored a goal in the final minutes to secure a victory in the Round 3 game played in Littleton. Fethard failed to get going in this fixture that allowed Sarsfields score two points in the first 10 minutes. This set the tone, and it was twenty-two minutes before Fethard got going with a Matt Coen free, shortly followed by a Dara O’Meara point from a free. Fethard held the edge when Cathal O’Mahony scored a goal, and finishing the half with a point from a Matt Coen free.
Going into the break the score was, Fethard 1-3, Sarsfields 0-2. That is as good as it got, with the second half totally belonging to Sarsfields, who scored 0-6. Fethard added points from Charlie Hackett and a Matt Coen free, bringing the sides level. Everyone was happy before disaster struck when Sarsfields scored a goal – game over – on the final score, Sarsfields 1-8, Fethard 1-5. Fethard ended up at the bottom of the table.
Team was: Jack Dolan, Michael O’Meara, Cathal O’Mahony, Brian Delahunty, Joedy Sheehan, Dara O’Meara, Liam Kiely, David Hayes, Ryan Walsh, Conor Neville, Brian Healy, Jack Purcell, Matt Coen, Jack Quinlan, and Darragh Spillane. Subs used: Charlie Hackett, Andrew Connorton, and Shane Deville.
