First ever Intermediate Football Final between Fethard and Clonmel Commercials
On Monday night, June 24, in Monroe, we were entertained to a very evenly contested first ever South Tipperary Intermediate Football Final meeting between Fethard and Clonmel Commercials.
With only a kick of a ball separating both sides in the first half, Fethard scored 0-5 to Commercials 1-5. Cathal O’Mahony scoring two great points from placed ball, before having to leave the field due to injury. Brian Healy also scored two points, and another great point from play was scored by our wing back, Liam Kiely. Fethard’s team were very young with eight playing in their first South Intermediate final.
In the third quarter, both teams had one score each, for Fethard, a free scored by Matt Coen. As we entered the final quarter, Fethard gained control and certainly looked like taking the spoils, scoring five points to one – two points from Matt Coen (1 free), and one each from Charlie Hackett, Darragh Spillane and Dara O Meara. As we entered the final minute one point up, it was disheartening to see Commercials draw level. We certainly had many chances to win, but this was a game that got away.
In the first half of extra time, we scored two points from play from Andrew Connorton and Matt Coen to Commercials three points. It was Commercials introduction of Cillian McNamara and Ciaran Cannon that changed the game in Commercials favour, scoring two points in the second half to our one point from a free by Brian Healy. This left us two points down at the final whistle. Final score: Fethard 0-14, Clonmel Commercials 1-13
Those who played well on the night for a gallant Fethard team were: Dara O Meara, Liam Kiely, Darragh Spillane, Charlie Hackett, Conor Neville, Andrew Connorton, and Matt Coen. Beidh la eile, le cúnamh Dé!
Fethard Team: Jack Dolan, Brian Delahunty, Cathal O Mahony (0-2F), Michael O Meara, Liam Kiely (0-1), Dara O Meara (0-1), Charlie Hackett (0-1), Darragh Spillane (0-2), Willie Morgan, Andrew Connorton (0-1), Mark Neville, Jack Purcell, Matt Coen 0-4 (1F), Ryan Walsh (captain), Brian Healy 0-3 (1F). Subs Used were: Conor Neville (0-1), Joedy Sheehan, Paul Moloney, Keenan Ahearne, and Sean Moroney.
