Transition Year student Lily Murphy is raising funds with some other pupils from her school to visit a sister school in Kenya. Lily has financed the trip herself by working in McCarthy’s Bar in Fethard but has to raise €1,500 for the Kenyan school. Her mother Sarah, a ceramic artist, donated the flowerpot in the photograph to be raffled, auctioned, or sold in aid of the fund. She has also organised a raffle for next weekend. There will be lots of spot prizes which our suppliers have donated. Call in to McCarthys to help support Lily and the school in Kenya.

International Women’s Day 2024

Organisers and speakers at the International Women’s Day celebration at held in the Presentation Convent Chapel on Thursday, March 7. L to R: Mollie Standbridge. Kateryna Sherstiuk (Interpreter), Sophie Carpentieri, Dr Carmel Condon, Sinead Delahunty, Hilary Dilworth STDC, Galyna Novikova and Mairead McCormack, Daycare Manager.

A celebration of International Women’s Day was held in Fethard Presentation Convent Chapel on Thursday, March 7,  2024, in collaboration with Fethard and District Day Care Centre Clg and South Tipperary Development Clg. Mollie Standbridge, welcomed the crowd of over 80 and, as Ukrainian Refugee Coordinator, explained that she helps support the 45 Ukrainian women and children presently living in the Convent in Fethard.

Hilary Dilworth, South Tipperary Development Company (STDC) introduced the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme, that works with community groups across South Tipperary providing development support and guidance to many of the Ukrainian ladies presently living in our area.

Local artist Sophie Carpentieri came from Switzerland to Tipperary, where she has lived for 15 years. She continued to describe her own experience of providing short term foster care to babies and children, and the place they now have in her house and in her heart.

Ukrainian refugee, 82-year-old Galyna, told her story through interpreter, Kateryna, saying, “I was born in Siberia, but after the death of my husband, I decided to move to Ukraine and lived there happily for 31 years. My son has lived in Ireland for 15 years and when the war started, he insisted on me fleeing. That trip wasn’t easy. We waited for two days before crossing the border to Poland on foot and another four days for our flight. My son found me a place in this Convent. I did not expect such a warm welcome. I have everything here. I would like to express my special gratitude to the people of Fethard for helping us all.” What Galyna likes most about Fethard is that, even though they don’t know her, people smile and say hello.

Local girl, Sinead Delahunty who told us she went to University College Dublin to study Physiotherapy. Now back in Fethard, she meets people of all ages and is totally inspired by some of their stories, like the 89 year who has orienteered all his life and wants to compete next year in the 90 to 95 age group. Sport can be very inclusive, no matter your age, gender or ability.

Local GP, Dr Carmel Condon said she set up her practice in Fethard in 1984 when it was already a very progressive and inclusive town. Today we honour women all over the world. We recognise the role of men. There is no limit to what women can achieve. Seize the Day! Nataliia, Hanna, Tetiana and Galyna from Ukraine, then sang very emotional renditions of native songs about mothers and women.

Daycare Manager, Mairead McCormack, congratulated the Day Care kitchen staff for the beautiful food; Fionnuala O’Sullivan for the ‘Goody bags’; Mark Fitzgerald for providing the music; Hilary and STDC for their support; the Ukrainian guests for their help in setting up the venue. The celebration finished with Chrissie Finnegan and Susan Meagher leading a rousing rendition of ‘Ballingarry’.
