Mission accomplished as Fethard Athletic Club’s Emmett McNamara and Louis Rice help Tipperary to win gold at the Munster Senior Cross Country Championships held on Sunday, November 12, at the Turnpike, Two-Mile Borris.

Fethard Athletic Club were very proud to have two of our senior athletes, Louis Rice and Emmett McNamara, represent us today over the 10k course. Both went into this race with the intention of helping the Tipperary team gain Munster Inter-County honours. Right from the gun, a small group of six athletes – which included eventual winner Michael Harty of East Cork; Jake O’Regan St. John’s; and Declan Moore, Bilboa; – leaving Tipperary’s Kevin Moore and Stuart Moloney fighting to hold on to the leading group.

Just behind this group were our own Louis Rice and Emmet McNamara, along with Barry Hartnett, Dundrum. These three Tipperary athletes were being chased hard by three East Cork athletes in a fight for the inter-county team medals. It was fantastic to see these athletes fight for their county as they worked together, lap after lap, on the energy sapping turf. On the final lap Emmett McNamara proved to have a little bit more in the tank as he pushed for home impressively and finished in 8th place overall.

Barry Hartnett and Louis Rice were just behind as they crossed the line in 9th and 10th positions, respectively, with Conor Keating of Moycarkey Coolcroo AC, in 15th place. This gave the Tipperary team a total of 51 points, winning the inter-county gold from Cork on 61 points and Clare on 96 points.

It was a very proud and historic day for the Fethard club having two athletes score on a winning Tipperary team at this level. The last time Tipperary won the team prize was in 2015 at The WIT complex in Waterford. This is the first time in the modern era that Fethard AC had athletes scoring on the senior team. Our athletes were well supported throughout the field by our chairman John Hurley, Theresa Hurley, with committee members Fintan Rice and Susan Laste.

'Star of the Show' – ninty-one-year-old Peg Brett with her daughter Mary – performing their Beyoncé celebrity act and bringing the house down!

Our local celebrity performer on the night was 91 years young, Peg Brett, who along with her daughter Mary and granddaughter Niamh, gave Beyoncé a run for her money with their fantastic lively performance of single ladies. Peg Mary and Niamh had literary put their performance together in Mary's kitchen three weeks before the show. When Peg agreed to be our local celebrity act, these ladies nearly lifted the roof off the Minella with the standing ovation they got. Thank you Peg – you’re an inspiration to us all.

Thank you also to everyone who helped front of house and behind the scenes with props and costumes, ye made the running on the show go so smoothly.

There’s no stopping this committee, and rumour has it that plans are already been hatched for Fethard's 2024 Community Fundraiser!

The wake scene of 'The Shaughraun' that plays in Abymill Theatre Fethard, E91 A471, on this coming Friday, November 24 & Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 8pm.

This is a classic Irish play by Dion Bouchicault and is set in 1800s Ireland in a small town in Sligo called Shuilabeg.
Conn the Shaughraun, is a vagabond, a story teller (mostly exaggerated), and the love of Moya Dolan's life. When he disappears, the town wonders where he is and think it's most likely jail, for poaching or drinking, or God only knows what.

In the meantime a regiment of English soldiers are looking for a local Irish rebel named Robert Ffolliott, who has escaped penal servitude in Australia and is back in Shuilabeg looking for justice. Lots of action with a big cast in this play with a mix of squires, landowners, who have lost their households and a few lovely lady villains and even a couple of nasty pirates.
Don't miss it!

Ringing the Bells for Peace!
Local people from all faiths gathered together on November 11, at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Fethard for silent reflection while the Bells for Peace were ringing in the church tower.
Local people from all faiths gathered together on November 11, at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Fethard for silent reflection while the Bells for Peace were ringing in the church tower.

The call from Most Rev Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan DD, Bishop of Waterford & Lismore, to ring the bells of churches throughout the area was answered at 11am on November 11, at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Fethard. Local people from all faiths gathered together, united in hearts and minds, in the spirit of fellowship with the hope for peace throughout the world. In particular, their thoughts were for innocent victims of these terrible conflicts.

The bell in Holy Trinity can only be accessed from the tower so the task fell to Stuart Clooney to strike the bells while the people stood in silent reflection in the churchyard. When the toll of the bell ceased, prayers were said inside the church, and this was followed by a short organ recital by James Clooney. It was truly an ecumenical occasion and so relevant in the times we live in. The morning finished with teas and coffees served by Heather Bailey.

Upcoming Carol Service
