Fethard Town Park came runner up in the Community Wellbeing Initiative Category at the IPB Pride of Place Community Awards in Armagh on Friday night, November 10, 2023.

The awards have grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements on the island of Ireland.

Speaking at the event, Maurice Moloney, Director, Fethard Town Park & Coolmore Ireland congratulated all the worthy winners on the night and stated “Fethard Town Park is a collaboration effort of many stakeholders who have shown enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment to achieve the Regional Centre of Excellence in Sport, Health & Recreation we have today”

Director Anthony Fitzgerald, Tipperary County Council, also in attendance at the event stated, “the Pride of Place awards celebrate the very best of communities from around the country. I am delighted that Fethard Town Park has been rightfully recognised for their efforts. At Tipperary County Council we continue to work closely with communities to help them embrace a spirit of pride and to support them in creating transformative impact.”

Accolades also went to Nenagh who took the honours in the towns with a population of over 4,000 people category. Their project, entitled ‘We♥Nenagh’ was a collaboration of Nenagh community representatives, co-ordinated by Nenagh Municipal District, the Silver Arch Family Resource Centre and Clúid Housing.

The awards, hosted by UTV’s Pamela Ballentine, took place in front of 400 community volunteers from across the island. The awards were delivered in partnership with Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council.

Sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place competition was initiated 21 years ago though a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development.

HOW TO BUILD A SHOEBOX

All you need to do is get an average size shoebox (or a plastic storage container would also be great), and wrap it with Christmas paper. This year we are very short of empty shoe boxes and would be very grateful if anyone has some, to please drop them in to Fethard Community Centre.

A time for reflection 'One Day'
Matthew Paul Miller - known by his Hebrew name Matisyahu is a Jewish reggae singer. In 2018 he asked 3,000 Muslims and Jews in Haifa (none of whom had ever met before) to come together and learn the song 'One Day' with him in less than an hour. Not only that, they also learned to sing and harmonise the song in three different languages. The concert that resulted from this brings the spirit of the new era. All one can see then, is the beauty of human beings, trying to bring peace into this world.

County Tipperary Cross Country Novice B
Moycarkey Coolcroo were the hosting club for the Novice B Cross Country Championship held on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at The Turnpike, Two-Mile Borris. A rainbow shone bright over Fethard AC  with the team’s silver and bronze results.

The ladies team of Carol Molloy, Marie Carrol and Paula Hendriksen, taking part in the County Tipperary Cross Country Novice B, at Moycarkey Coolcroo.
The ladies team of Carol Molloy, Marie Carrol and Paula Hendriksen, taking part in the County Tipperary Cross Country Novice B, at Moycarkey Coolcroo.

Fethard had two teams competing on the day. The women’s team were Paula Hendriksen, Carol Molly and Marie Carroll; and the men’s team were Fintan Rice, James Maher, John Needham and John Hurley. With conditions very heavy underfoot due to the recent rain, the trek around the long course was always going to be a test of the runner’s strength and endurance.

The women’s race got underway at 12pm with Paula, Carol and Marie getting down to the task at hand and settled in to the 3k distance nicely, battling their way through the soft turf. They showed tremendous endurance and strength as the race progressed. All three women can be very happy with the combined placings of 4th place for Paula, 8th place for Carol and 10th place for Marie, which saw them secure 3rd place in the team event. Congratulations to the ladies and a 1st Novice medal for Marie Carroll – a proud day indeed for Marie.

The men's team of John Needham, Fintan Rice and James Maher, taking part in the County Tipperary Cross Country Novice B, at Moycarkey Coolcroo.

The men’s race started shortly after the ladies, with Fintan Rice, James Maher, John Needham and John Hurley taking to the line. Again, this was a battle of physical and mental ability. We had Fintan Rice using all his experience over cross country and going off with the lead group as he fought for a podium position. Fintan was well supported by teammate James Maher as they challenged the early leaders. After two laps of this tough heavy course, the gap widened as four broke away leaving Fintan and James in 5th and 6th place, and though they tried so hard to bridge that gap in the closing stages, they came home in those positions.

Just behind we had John Needham in 9th place. John ran very solidly throughout this difficult race, and with all three combined, they won silver team medals for the club. We wish John Hurley a speedy recovery who unfortunately pulled up injured. Congratulations to all who competed and made it another successful day’s outing for Fethard A.C.

Our coaches and supporters were very thankful for our new gabazo, especially for shelter when a heavy shower came in. Thanks to Moycarkey Coolcroo for hosting the event, and the many volunteers of the Tipperary County Board, as without them these events couldn’t happen.

The Shaughraun is Fionn MacCumhaill Players' twentieth anniversary production and their twenty-fourth play to date. The group will go on tour with this classic Dion Boucicault costume play, to various venues in Tipperary. So be sure not to miss this big cast of twenty – including Tatters the dog!

"The Shaughraun' (set in 1866) is one of those sturdy theatrical vehicles that’s hard to resist. The play has healthy doses of comedy mixed in with the melodrama. There’s also action — fights! a jailbreak! — plenty of romance, a bit of singing and dancing, a dog, plots and counterplots, and characters pulled from the trunk of dramatic types."
