Frank Patterson sings 'Bring Flowers Of The Rarest'

Happy First of May! we'll share this well-known song 'Bring Flowers of the Rarest' or often referred to as 'Queen of the May' – a Marian hymn written by Mary E. Walsh. It was published as the 'Crowning Hymn' in the Wreath of Mary 1871 / 1883 and later in St. Basil's Hymnal (1889). The hymn is frequently sung during a May 'Crowning Service', one of several May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This alternative version is sung by the late Frank Paterson, from Clonmel. Frank, a world renowned tenor, died age 62, on Saturday, June 10, 2000, in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City.

Bring Flowers of the Rarest (Queen of The May)

Bring flowers of the rarest,
Bring blossoms the farest,
From garden and woodland
And hillside and vale;
Our full hearts are swelling,
Our Glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest
Flower of the vale.

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May,
O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May.

Their lady they name thee,
Their mistress proclaim thee,
Oh, grant that thy children
on earth be as true.
As long as the bowers
Are radiant with flowers,
As long as the azure
shall keep its bright hue.

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May,
O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May.

Sing gaily in chorus;
The bright angels o'er us
Re-echo the strains
we begin upon earth;
Their harps are repeating
The notes of our greeting,
For Mary herself is
the cause of our mirth.

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May,
O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, and Queen of the May.

Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School Transition Year students photographed at their 'Coffee Morning' to raise funds in aid of supplying a supporter's bus to travel to the Grand National Final in Dublin on May 4, where the school's entry 'Golden Future' will compete.

Fethard Patrician Presentation Transition year students held a Coffee Morning at Fethard Horse Country Experience, (Town Hall), Fethard on Friday, April 21. Students worked hard to achieve their goal of raising funds for a supporter’s bus to travel to Dublin on Thursday, May 4, where the regional winning team, ‘Golden Future’ modelled and made by Zoe Prout and Aílise Fitzgerald, will show their costume at the Junk Kouture competition at the 3 Arena. All costumes made by the students this year from the 4th year group were on display for the morning, where people could come and look closely at the recycled materials used by the students and talk about the construction of these outfits.

Thank you to our students who came to support this event, to all the parents who contributed their wonderful baking and to the local community for the kind support given. It all contributed to making this a positive experience for the students. We wish the ‘Golden Future’ team the best of luck at the Junk Kouture Dublin City Final this year on May 4, 2023.

A huge 'Thank You' to everyone who helped make Fethard & District Day Care Centre's 'Preloved Fashion Sale' such a great success on Thursday night last, April 20. In particular to the following who provided prizes for the raffle: O’Sullivans Pharmacy; Kennys' Centra; Daltons' Pharmacy; Minella Hotel; Anita Maguire, Fethard Reflexology; Ger Cahill. Thanks also to the hard working committee and the many volunteers who helped. But most of all, thanks to everyone who attended on the night – the goodwill towards the Fethard & District Day Care Centre was very much in evidence. A sum in excess of €6,000 was raised, for which we are extremely grateful.

Fleming family Information requested
Carolyn Hudson (email: gensnowpalms@gmail.com) is researching the family of James Joseph Fleming, born on February 16, 1893, in Fethard, Tipperary, if anyone can help.

Carolyn sent the following information from a copy of a birth certificate which must have been requested. she suspects it was obtained for proof of birth in order to receive the Canadian Old Age Pension.

BIRTH Name:  James Fleming. Born: sixteenth February 1893, Fethard, Tipperary, Eire. Issued:  02 July 1960. It does not appear to list parents’ names, but there are large black patches over much of the page.

MARRIAGE: The record I have of this marriage is a typed copy of information which appears to be from the original certificate.  Bride: Olive May Clarke; her father George William Clarke (Irish) mother: Emma Richmond, English. Groom: James Joseph Fleming. Date of Marriage:  11 July 1923. Place of Marriage: Fort Erie, Niagara County, Ontario Canada, St. Patrick’s R. C. Parish. Father’s name: John Fleming, occupation; carpenter, horseman; birthplace:  Fethard; Religion:  Catholic; baptised Catholic. Mother’s name:  Catherine Fleming, birthplace: Cashel

Noted on the bottom of this typed copy: Groom’s family: Brothers:  Francis and beside his name 'Frank' is inked in, Michael, William, Steve, John, Richard, Edward. Sisters:     Maria, Margaret, Catherine, two deceased.

Another handwritten notation:  Approximate immigration date – 1918 to Canada (I question this: he would have been 25, to old for a 'Home Child'). I have not been able to find any information from his birth in 1893 until his marriage in 1923, in Fort Erie, Niagara County, Ontario, Canada.

The living descendants of James have very little knowledge of his early life.  Family lore has James coming to Canada as a 'Home Child'. He died in 1960 in Oshawa, Ontario, and is buried in the Thornton Cemetery.  He was a well known and respected resident of Oshawa during the latter part of his life. The family do not know if any of his siblings emigrated to Canada, or if he ever was in contact with them.

If, indeed, he was a 'Home Child', he may have travelled as a young boy with a group of other children who’s families were not able to provide for them. There were many organizations and  church groups who facilitated passage to Canada, where the children would be placed in homes or farms until they reached the age of majority.  (There were thousands of these children sent to Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the majority came from England).

If there are still Fleming relatives living in the Fethard area they might possibly  be grandchildren of James’ siblings. Thank you for taking the time to read through this note, and I would be grateful for any information you might be able to share. Kind regards, Carolyn Hudson, email: gensnowpalms@gmail.com

Faces and Places from the Past

This week we have a selection of photographs from the annual Fethard-London Emigrants Reunion (c.1978). These photographs were taken by the late Nicky O’Shea, Quartercross, Killusty, who died on August 23, 1985, aged 59 years, and is buried in Killusty. Nicky was an active member of Fethard Legion of Mary at the time and had attended twelve Fethard-London Reunions up to 1984 when he was unable to travel due to illness. We have some names but I'm sure many of our Fethard friends at home and away will know some more and help bring back happy pleasant memories. Please send any comments or photo information, names and event, to fethardnews@gmail.com
