Big Picture – Millennium Pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon 2000
Millennium Pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross 2000
The largest crowd ever turned out to take part in the annual pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon on Sunday, May 21, 2000 – a date chosen to coincide with National Pilgrimage Day in Ireland. The ceremony concluded with mass in O’Donnell’s field followed by much appreciated refreshments served by a local committee. Fr Sean Ryan c.c. was spiritual director, and amongst the pilgrims who completed the journey to the cross, was sprightly octogenarian Fr John Meagher OSA.
To mark his fifty-years unbroken association with the Slievenamon pilgrimage as general administrator and co-ordinator, a presentation was made to Christy Williams of a beautiful, framed picture of the first sunrise on Slievenamon of the new Millennium, photographed on 1st January 1, 2000.
