Fethard man presented with Donal Walsh Cup

Mattie Burke from Drumdeel, Fethard, receiving the 'Donal Walsh Cup', after he captained Shannon U20s Rugby Team to victory over UCC in a hard fought final played in Tralee.
Congratulations to Mattie Burke from Drumdeel, Fethard, who captained Shannon U20s RFC to victory over UCC in a hard fought Donal Walsh Cup Final in Tralee last weekend. This tight game went right to the wire with the students looking good value just a point behind at 15 to 14 with 10 minutes left, and Shannon down to 13 men. But a gutsy backs to the wall hold out by Shannon saw them turn it around to win 21 to 14. The cup, presented to Mattie, was greeted with a powerful rendition of 'There is an Isle'. The Cut is in memory of Donal Walsh, who was an inspirational young man lost to cancer nine years ago.

Fethard students’ design chosen All-Ireland National Finals in Dublin

A huge congratulations to our Junk Kouture finalists from Patrician Presentation Secondary School, Fethard. This year’s entry in the competition, ‘Golden Future’, created by Zoë Prout and Ailíse Fitzgerald, has qualified to go forward to the All-Ireland National Finals in Dublin in May. With over 1,200 outfits submitted to the competition, this is a remarkable achievement for Zoë and Ailíse and their team, who were one of the sixteen outfits chosen from the overall south regional area.
The winners were announced last week on the Junk Kouture YouTube channel and on TikTok. The school had seven entries this year to the competition, with three getting into the semi-final, which was announced on Wednesday, March 9, students waited in anticipation for the results the next day, March 10, to see if they had reached the final. Well done to ‘Golden Future’. Junk Kouture is an educational platform that offers a creative way to become involved in active climate change initiatives, empowering them to lasting behavioural change. Each student engages with creating an outfit made completely from recyclables.
‘Golden Future’ is made entirely from ‘rubbish’ essentially, all found and ready for the bin. Hundreds of till receipts made into tiny flowers, waste electric wires, telephone cables, insulation for carpets, underlay, and general wastepaper. The idea was to focus on the cost of living. The cost-of-living crisis is making one in every three people fearful or anxious about the future.

The wonderful detail in the making of ‘Golden Future’ dress, created by Zoë Prout and Ailíse Fitzgerald for Junk Kuture.
The designers of this dress wanted to highlight going forward towards a golden future, with hope and a change in appreciation of peoples' lifestyles. Teenagers in this generation will develop a better resilience and be more grateful for what they have after experiencing price hikes and inflation. The design of this dress emphasises that there is hope for a future where society is not dreading the electricity bill or rent hikes, and enjoyed the experience of making from scratch, a fantastic outfit from complete rubbish, and all recyclables!
