Under 19 Football ‘B’ County Final
Galtee Rovers 1-9, Fethard 1-8

On Monday last October 31, at the U19 Football B County Final, Fethard faltered at the last hurdle by the narrowest of margins under atrocious wet conditions in Cahir. Galtee took control for a period of 25 minutes, scoring 1-3 without reply. In the final 15 minutes it was score for score, leaving both sides level in the 59 minute and a free awarded and scored by Conall Grogan of Galtee. Fethard also lost last year to Golden in the U17 semifinal.

Luck was not on Fethard’s side. The opening 15 minutes very even at 0-3 each. Matt Coen scored two from play and Michael Quinlan scored one from a free. By the 20 minute we had raced into a five-point lead after Michael Quinlan kicked a 45 over the bar and an excellent worked goal from Shane Neville’s pass to his brother Mark, who put Sean Moroney through for a great goal. The same player added a point from play. Fethard, leading 1-5 to 0-3, however, were left without scoring chances from then on, with Galtee scoring a goal and a point before the interval.

The rain was persistent, and conditions were getting worse. It was Galtee who were making better use of the ball, scoring two points to go back ahead before the 43rd minute.  The introduction of fresh legs for Fethard saw Conor Neville get us back in the game with more attacks. A free was kicked over by Michael Quinlan and we were level for the third time. We drew level again in the 50th minute with another free by Michael Quinlan. We edged ahead with another free from 35 meters out in the 57th minute and after a free for Galtee in the 59th minute we were level again. With conditions disimproving, there were no further scores from play – from then on it was all frees and Fethard were pipped at the post.

Fethard Team: Jack Davey, Michael James Phelan, Dara O’Meara, Michael O’Meara, Charlie Hackett, Shane Neville, Liam Kiely, Darragh Spillane, Jack Quinlan, Keenan Ahearn, Mark Neville, Oisín Ryan, Sean Moroney 1-1, Michael Quinlan 0-5 F, and Matt Coen 0-2. Sub used was Conor Neville. Other subs: Andrew Connorton, Jack O’Donoghue, James Barry, Tom Murray, Michael Flanagan, Declan O’Meara, Michael Lambe, Conor Sullivan, and Keelan Kennedy.  Referee was Tom Loughnane. Changes in our Parish
Due to the diminished availability of our priests there will have to be a change in our parish mass times in the future. Previously our parish was in a group known as the Fethard Deanery which consisted of seven parishes. This did not have any real impact on the day to day running of the individual parishes in our deanery. Our new proposed group is to be called Slievenamon Parish Grouping consisting of five parishes – Fethard & Killusty, Killenaule & Moyglass, Drangan & Cloneen, Mullinahone and Ballingarry.

By working in these new groups our priests will be able to share their workload, but inevitably we will have a reduction in the number of masses in most parishes. Hopefully, if we have less masses, we will have more people at each mass and therefore have a more enriching eucharistic experience.
A meeting about the necessary short term changes will be held upstairs in the Tirry Centre at 8pm on Tuesday evening 1st November. All are welcome.

HOW TO BUILD A SHOEBOX

All you need to do is get an average size shoebox (or a plastic storage container would also be great), and wrap it with Christmas paper. This year we are very short of empty shoe boxes and would be very grateful if anyone has some, to please drop them in to Geraldine McCarthy at Fethard Community Centre.

'A Merry Show' – Fethard Players at Savoy, Limerick
Review from the ‘Limerick Leader’ on Mon. Feb 27, 1950

Continuous Ripples of Laughter
A packed attendance in the Savoy Cinema last night greeted the Fethard Players on their second visit to Limerick, when they presented then hilarious pantomime 'Simple Simon,' for the benefit of the Augustinian Church Debt Fund. The cast of 33 including 11 principals, deserves the highest praise for a well-produced comedy which has been acclaimed by many people as better than last year's show, 'The Erin Curtain'.

Topical Gags
The entire pantomime was seemingly well rehearsed, a feature of the topical gags being the evident pun taken to introduce local personalities and places which drew a round of applause from an enthusiastic audience - While all the principals gave smooth performances, there are a few worth a special mention. Paddy McLellan, in the title role kept the comedy going at breakneck speed and had only to bat an eyelid to send ripples of humour through the house. William O’Flynn is Paddy's stage mother ‘Dame Twinkle’, was another ‘natural’ and was always in the thick of things. As ‘Baron Cufflinks’ Louis O'Donnell gave a lively characterisation and was heard to great advantage in his renderings of popular tunes.

The leading feminine role of ‘Marion’ was capably played by Joan Goldsborough whose pleasing voice can, by the way, be heard over Radio Eireann tomorrow night. An up-to-date pirate Eddie O'Neill gave an unfaltering study of ‘Sam’, and to him also go bouquets for the producing end of the comedy. ‘Slippery’ underdog to ‘Sam’ was another hard part, which a less experienced actor than Ned Maher might easily have failed in.

Other principals were Messrs John Collins, Dinny Looby, Johnny Lyttleton, Tom Barrett, Paddy Morrissey and Misses Helen O’Connell and Betty O’Donnell.

Choruses and Orchestra
The choruses were nicely blended and were enhanced by the Players’ orchestra under the leadership of Mrs Murphy. Staging was well-nigh perfect and the costumes which were made by the members themselves would do credit to any operatic company.

Rev Father O’Flynn OSA thanked the players on behalf of the Augustinian Fathers and the patrons and expressed the wish that Limerick would be afforded the opportunity of seeing the Fethard group in action again next season.

Faces and Places from the Past

This week we have a selection of photographs taken of people going to Sunday Mass in the 1960s. A photographer from Kilkenny was regular visitor to local churches at that time to take photographs and then sell them from a display case outside O'Sullivan's Chemist. Thanks to all who sent information and names for the photographs below, it is much appreciated. Contact us at: fethardnews@gmail.com
