Memories of visits from America
The Northern Ireland Census 2021 figures which were published on, Thursday, September 22, 2022, state that Catholics outnumber Protestants in Northern Ireland for the first time since the partition of the island.

Listening to this report brought back a happy memory from the early 1960s when we had a much-looked-forward-to visit from our first cousins in America – both were Sisters of the Ursuline Order based at Blue Point, New York. Sr. Evangelist (Catherine O’Brien) and Sr. Philomena (Nuala O’Brien) were daughters of Katie O’Brien (née Kenny) and Pat O’Brien, who lived on The Green where Mrs Esther McCormack now lives.

Katie O'Brien (née Kenny), who lived on The Green where Esther McCormack now lives, is photographed above with four of her five children L to R: Nuala (Sr. Philomena the middle child born on Oct 25, 1918), Katie O'Brien (mother), Eddie O'Brien (youngest), Ursula Fleming (second youngest) and Kathleen (Mother Evangelist) eldest. Missing daughter from photograph is Mary, the second eldest who lived in England.

SR. CATHERINE O'BRIEN (SR. EVANGELIST)
(Oct 21, 1912 – Jul 20, 1977)

Born in Fethard in County Tipperary, Sr. Catherine immigrated to the United States to enter the Ursuline community in 1927. She went on to teach at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Holy Family High School, and St. Mary’s High School. She also taught and served as principal at Nativity BVM, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Maurice. Sr. Catherine retired to Blue Point and upon her death was described by a former student as “a real mother to all of us.”

Sr. Catherine was joined in her vocation as an Ursuline Sister of Tildonk by her sister, Sr. Philomena. The news report was very relevant to a story told by Sr. Evangelist while on one of her visits to Fethard in the 1960s, a visit that only occurred every 4-6 years as they travelled by ship.

One day while speaking about the partition of Ireland – North and South – she gently explained that there was no need to worry in any way about a divided Ireland, because in 50 years or so, the Catholics will outnumber the Protestants, and Ireland will again be united.

I’m sure she was making her prediction based on the fact that the number of children born to Catholic families at that time, way outnumbered the number born to Protestant families. However, she did maintain it would not happen in her lifetime, but we children had every chance of seeing a united Ireland. Whatever does happen in the future, I’ve never forgotten her prediction and smiled at the relevance of her story after hearing today’s news.

Sr. Evangelist (born Oct 21, 1912 – died Jul 20, 1977) and Sr. Philomena (born Oct 25, 1918 – died Apr 25, 2011) were two of many girls who left Fethard at a very young age to join the Ursulines of Tildonk in New York City. Others who left Fethard included their neighbour Sr. Paula Carey, The Green, (Jul 18, 1919 – Jun 8, 2010); Sr. Monica Kevin, Barrack Street, (Mar 19, 1920 – Mar 24, 2019); Sr. Vincent McCarthy (Jan 8, 1919 – Mar 23, 1999); Sr. Mary Joseph McCarthy (1914-1911); Sr. Mary Rita McCarthy (1916-1957); and Sr. Benignus Power, The Valley and Convent Lodge (Apr 17, 1915 – Feb 21, 1972).
May they all rest in Peace.

In more recent years, Sr. Margaret O'Brien OSU, the eldest daughter of the late Pat O'Brien from The Valley, Fethard, was elected General Superior at the General Chapter of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in Belgium on August 5, 2008.

NOTE - The Census 2021 figures released on Thursday, September 22, 2022, show that 45.7% of the region’s population said they were either Catholic or brought up as a Catholic. The figures for Protestants (and other Christian faiths) was 43.5% while 1.5% were from non-Christian religions. Northern Ireland had a significant Protestant majority when it was established in 1921 as part of the partition of Ireland.

Match Report – Fethard 4-13, Moyle Rovers 2-6

On Wednesday, September 21, at Duneske Cahir, the Hall Alarms South Tipperary U19 B Football Final between Fethard and Moyle Rovers was played at 8pm. Fethard laid the foundation for this win in the second quarter with a display of fast free-flowing football, scoring 2-4.  The difference between the sides was the coaching and the pace Fethard were able to take their scores on the other end.  The full-forward line scored 3-11 between them and were deserving winners on the night.

The first score of the game came after 5 minutes when Keenan Ahearne kicked a point from the 40m line. Then Michael Quinlan scored a point from a free 35m out from his hand, followed by the ‘point of the quarter’ – a counter-attack finished by Sean Moroney – that left the score, Fethard 0-3 to Moyle Rovers 0-1.  Showing great pace, Mark Neville added a point from play. Liam Kiely then raced up field and gave a great ball to Mark Neville, who finished to the net.

Fethard were now rampant with Matt Coen scoring his first point from play, then, on winning the kick out, he immediately set up Sean Moroney for his goal. With the wind in Fethard’s favour the kick outs were not reaching the halfway line. Matt Coen kicked over a great point after receiving a pass from Shane Neville. Michael Quinlan then scored a point from a free at two-minutes before the break. Fethard had built a 10 points advantage at the break, leaving the score Fethard 2-7 to Moyle Rovers 0-3.

After the break, Fethard were first out of the block with a counter-attack by Michael Quinlan – the quickest player on the field – setting up Sean Moroney for his second goal. Immediately afterwards, Michael added a point from a free, and Fethard added another point from Sean Moroney and one from a free taken by Matt Coen.  Michael Quinlan added a further point from a free, leaving the score at the end of the third quarter, Fethard 3-11, Moyle Rovers 1-6.

In the final quarter Fethard adding 1-2 from frees, with 2 points from Michael Quinlan and the ‘goal of the match’ scored from an acute angle, after great run and finish by Matt Coen – one of the best players on the night. Fethard used all five substitutes in the last 5 minutes and finished on the final score, Fethard 4-13 to Moyle Rovers 2-6.  Both sides had wides tally of eight misses each.

All Fethard players had a good game.  The stand-out players were Dara O’Meara, Shane Neville, Mark Neville, Liam Kiely, Darragh Spillane, Sean Moroney, Michael Quinlan, and Matt Coen to the fore.  Chairman South Board, Seamie Mullins, presented the new South Board Cup to Fethard captain Darragh Spillane, accepted with great applause. Fethard now advance to the County Semi Final against Eire Og / Nenagh.

Fethard team: Jack Davey, Michael James Phelan, Dara O’Meara, Michael O’Meara, Charlie Hackett, Shane Neville, Liam Kiely, Darragh Spillane (captain), Jack Quinlan, Keenan Ahearne 0-1, Mark Neville 1-1, Oisín Ryan, Sean Moroney 2-2, Michael Quinlan 0-6 (6f), and Matt Coen 1-3 (1f). Subs Used: Andrew Connorton, Jack O’Donoghue, James Barry, Tom Murray, and Michael Flanagan.

A very enjoyable party was held on Saturday night, September 10, in Fethard Ballroom, to celebrate the 90th birthday of one of Fethard and Killusty's favourite sons, Jimmy O’Shea, and to pay a deserved tribute to his enormous contribution to Fethard GAA Club and the community of Fethard & Killusty Parish over a long number of years.

L to R: Gerry Fogarty, Jimmy O'Shea and Adrian Cashin.

Born in Killusty in 1932, Jimmy is perhaps best known for his GAA career which included a twenty-year senior playing career with Fethard and a near fifty-year stint as trainer, manager, and numerous roles in the club, bringing success not known since the 1920s.

Past captains of Fethard teams spoke of Jimmy’s dedication, his motivational skill, coaching and encouragement, and his huge knowledge of players and tactics, plus a commitment to his club, which has scarcely ever been equalled and probably will never be surpassed. Also mentioned was his career as a master mechanic running his own business, with legions of satisfied customers; his long career as an entertainer on stage with Fethard Players and Hogan Musical Society and his friendly outgoing personality which makes him a pleasure to meet at any time.

Perhaps the best tribute paid on the night was by the number of his extended family and friends who travelled long distances to honour a great Fethard character and to wish him, many more happy years in the parish he has served so well.  Jimmy, our thanks from everyone! – (Denis Burke)

All roads led to Fethard on Saturday night last, September 10, for the celebration of Jimmy O’Shea’s 90th Birthday. A wonderful evening was had by all, commencing with Mass at 7pm in the Holy Trinity Parish Church, celebrated by Fr Liam Everard P.P. A great number of friends and family were in attendance both in the church and at the reception afterwards in Fethard Ballroom.

People came from far and near – Wexford, Dublin, Drogheda, Kilkenny, Mitchelstown, Tullamore, Laois, Tramore, Clonmel and Ardfinnan – and a great number of locals from the community adding to the occasion, which was enjoyed by all.

Other speakers present also recalled their joyful playing careers, commencing with Denis Burke who also mentioned Jimmy’s involvement in Fethard Tidy Towns, setting a great example by cutting and maintaining the grass at the Town Wall at Watergate since the 1980s. His love for Horse Racing and Dog Racing was also mentioned, with his knowledge of both unsurpassed. Paddy Kendrick reminded us of his exceptional skills as a motor mechanic, including selling Paddy his first car – a Volkswagen.
Michael O’Riordan, Templemore, and formerly from Barrack Street, stated Jimmy was a great friend when he was starting out in life. Jimmy’s generosity knew no bounds, offering his car, a Volkswagen of course, whenever needed. When leaving the yard Jimmy’s only instruction to Michael was to drive the car as a Volkswagen, not a Mercedes!

Willie Morrissey praised Jimmy for his coaching skills, and his dedication be being first into the field for training every training session. At one stage, Jimmy put a rub on his back, that ended up burning other parts of his body, making him forget where he got injured. Brian Burke praised Jimmy for his outstanding commitment with a story of when he once got injured, his body needed assistance to recover, Jimmy brought him to a physio for laser treatment that was used on greyhounds. This brought great cheers from all present.

Fethard win South U13 C Hurling Final
Fethard 3-6,  Grangemockler/Ballyneale 1-9

On Saturday last, September 17, 2022, in Páirc Na Healai, Carrick-on-Suir, Fethard played their hearts out to take the Austy & Mary Godfrey South Tipperary U13 C Hurling title and now advance to the County Semifinal next week.

Grangemockler, with a first class display by all the team in a first half, scored 1-6, with 1-5 from one player. Fethard’s Patrick Coffey scored a great point from play and Danny Gleeson scored a point from a free, while Ewan Byrne took his opportunity to score a goal and then added a point from play not long before the short whistle.  With a great tenacity, Fethard’s defence kept the score down with particular emphasis from Joe Gaule, Joe Purcell and Pa Coffey clearing their lines. Jimmy Higgins also stood up to his task against an opponent who stood over 6ft tall.

After the break Fethard battled in all parts of the field, with their running and commitment a joy to watch, and holding their opponents to 0-3. Danny Gleeson scored a point from a free that was followed shortly by another great goal from Ewan Byrne. Then Jason Trehy added another goal, our ‘gander was up’ with Danny Gleeson adding 2 points – one from a free and our last point from play – leaving the final score, Fethard 3-6, Grangemockler /Ballyneale 1-9. With fierce excitement expressed by all, Fethard won their first South Title of 2022. The whole team and management must be complimented on the victory.

Clashawley River Walk with Dr Fran Igoe on Tuesday September 13.
Fethard Tidy Towns organised another successful outdoor event on the banks of the River Clashawley last week. Dr Fran Igoe, Regional Coordinator of the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) led a large group on a fascinating walk from Madam’s Bridge down to the Abymill on a golden September evening.

Fran is an expert on river health and has a background of working with Inland Fisheries as well as leading a number of community river projects. He demonstrated ‘kick sampling’ a technique used to assess the health of a river by agitating the river bed, then collecting the invertebrates and other river creatures which are disturbed into a special net. He identified these in a collecting tray, and the numbers of creatures such as Stonefly and Green Caddisfly were compared with the numbers of Watersnails and Waterlouse  to give an overall score of river health. The first group are more vulnerable to pollution and so bigger numbers of these are a good sign in a river. Fran’s diagnosis of the Clashawley in Fethard from his kick sampling was that it’s in ‘moderate’ health only and needs careful monitoring and some remedial work.

He told the audience that the River Clashawley is a key spawning ground for fish including Atlantic salmon and trout and despite very low water levels each summer, it plays a vital role in the ecosystem of the area, providing a habitat for a wide range of birds (eg kingfishers, dippers, martins, grey wagtails, herons), invertebrates (eg moths, butterflies, mayflies) and plants (eg iris, loosestrife, willow herb, water mint). However the river currently has an official status of ‘moderate’ quality and is significantly contaminated by nitrogen  and phosphates which are due to leaking septic tanks and agricultural run-off of slurry and fertiliser. These excessive nutrients are the main cause of the heavy vegetation in the river bed which is so evident in the summer months. But Fran also agreed with the conclusions reached by Dr Mieke Muyllaert who gave a talk in Fethard a few weeks ago, that on balance, the vegetation is actually providing a useful service in the river at present. Because the water tends to disappear in the summer, they prevent drying out of the river bed mud in our increasingly extreme weather patterns, and are therefore allowing organisms to survive these drought conditions.

Dr Fran Igoe, Regional Coordinator of the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) led a large group on a fascinating walk from Madam’s Bridge down to the Abymill on a golden September evening.

Fran suggested that it would be a wonderful project for a local community group to engage with all the relevant stakeholders including the local authority and land owners to look at ways of improving water quality which might include wider buffer margins of trees and uncultivated land along the river bank and a range of other measures. Such a project would be eligible for funding, including from his LAWPRO organisation.

As evening fell, the walk reached Watergate Bridge and Kevin Collins from Birdwatch Ireland demonstrated a bat detector device which picks up signals emitted by these wonderful creatures as they flit past. He was able to confirm the presence of at least two bat species, the ‘Soprano Pipistrelle’ and a rarer water loving bat, the ‘Daubentons’ bat.

The walk concluded with a big ‘Thank you’ to Fran from Tidy Towns secretary Mary Healy. Fran responded with a very kind offer to help fine tune the proposed plan for the river walk in the town which is soon to be drawn up. BACK TO CURRENT NEWS
