U17 B Hurling South Semiiinal Fethard v Ballingarry
Ballingarry 3-18 (27)   Fethard 4-13 (25)

In Pairc Na Healai, Carrick-on-Suir, on Monday last, September 12, 2022, Fethard U17 Hurling team gave us a heart-warming display in defeat, similar to the County League Final, when they lost out on penalties.  With end-to-end excitement and light fading fast, most people present would have said, a draw would have been a fair result. However, that was not to be, with Ballingarry scoring three points in the final few minutes to emerge victors and go forward to the South Final.

Fethard were very quick of the mark scoring 2-2 to 0-1 in the first 10 minutes. Jack Quinlan scored two points from frees and the first goal was well taken by Charlie Walsh. Jack Quinlan added another point from a free and a great goal, to leave Fethard very well poised at the end of 15 minutes at 3-3 to 0-3 ahead.  Up to half time we struggled, with Ballingarry scoring 2-4 to Fethard’s one point, leaving the sides level at Fethard 3-4, Ballingarry 2-7.

At the throw-in after the break, our first attack yielded a great goal by Jack Quinlan, with Ballingarry getting two points. Jack scored a long range free before disaster struck when Ballingarry scored a goal. However, Jack pointed another free to bring the teams level again at 4-6 to 3-9.  Three further points were scored by both sides, to level the score once again at the three-quarter stage score of 4-9 to 3-12.

The final quarter was hectic when Charlie Walsh got an excellent point from the touchline. Ballingarry bounced back with two points in the 48th minute. Jack had us level again with a 80m free at 4-11 to 3-14. Another great point from Mark Neville let us draw level again in the 52nd minute. Matt Coen got the point of the match from play from centre-back and this was to be our final score with Ballingarry adding 3 points to just edge us out.

Hard Luck to the whole team who were excellent. Stand out player for scoring was Jack Quinlan scoring 3-10 (10F) of our total score of 4-13. Fethard Team: Sam Coen, Michael James Phelan, Liam Kiely, Noah Flynn, Oisín Ryan, Matt Coen 0-1, Rory O’Mahony, Jack Davey, Andrew Connorton, Danny Barry, Jack Quinlan 3-10, John Lacy, Charlie Walsh 1-1, Mark Neville 0-1, and Charlie Hackett. Subs Used: Ben Allen and Danny Shelly. Other subs: Luke Lacy, James Barry, T.J. Keane, and Alex Knightly.

Slievenamon Pilgrimage back after three years
Full group photographed after reaching Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon on Sunday, September 4, 2022.
Full group photographed after reaching Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Maybe it was the change of date, or perhaps the poor weather forecast, but we had a smaller than usual number taking part in this year’s pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon. Nevertheless, after an absence of three years, it was great to see so many familiar faces present and even better to see some new ones. Parents who brought their young children along will instil memories that will last a lifetime.

As is tradition, before the Slievenamon climb begins, we ask our patrons to carry the crosses that will make up the fourteen stations on the way to Holy Year Cross, and this year for the first time we had all female selection of cross bearers, where else would you expect this to occur, only on Sliabh na mBan (Mountain of the Women).

The climb was undertaken in glorious sunshine and when we reached the Cross, we took a moment to reflect and remember all those who were involved in the erecting of the first Cross in 1950. On the walk back we had a slight mist but that only helped to cool us down. When we descended back to O'Donnell’s Field, the sun shone brightly again as Mass was led by Fr Liam Everard P.P., assisted by Fr Iggy O'Donovan OSA, and Canon Tom Breen. After Mass our patrons were treated to tea and refreshments, and it was great to see so many old friends and former neighbours meeting up after the longer than expected Covid layoff.

The first ‘thank you’ must go to our host Keith O'Donnell, who is carrying on his family tradition that was started many years ago by his late parents, Jimmy and Eileen O’Donnell, who opened their land to accommodate the cars, mass and associated celebrations with the event.

Our thanks also to everyone who helped make this the special day that it was, and to all who supplied food, your generosity never ceases to amaze us. Finally to all who took the time and effort to be with us, travelling from far and near, without you we wouldn't have a pilgrimage. We look forward to seeing you all back on the mountain again next year. Until then please stay safe.
