The autumn outing of the Historical Society takes place this Saturday, 27th September, to the walled town of Kilmallock and to the very old landscape around Lough Gur, both in County Limerick.
Kilmallock has lots of its Town Wall still standing, with a 600 metre run intact all along the southern end of the town. Anyone that has gone through the town will remember the two gateways, Blossom Gate and Kings Castle. There is also the Collegiate Church of Peter and Paul and a Dominican Friary. The group will be taken around by Sarah McCutcheon, the County Archaeologist for Limerick.
After lunch in Kilmallock the tour will shift to Lough Gur which is a very unique landscape indeed. Bring your walking shoes and you will see a Stone Circle, a Wedge Megalithic tomb, the lake of course and a stone formation known as ‘the Spectacles’. Limerick county Council have developed walkways with lovely views across the lake and the guide here will be Michael Quinlan, a retired teacher who is one of the great experts on the area.
The group will leave from the Town Hall in Fethard at 9am; all are welcome and please contact Dóirín 31936, Terry 23402 or Pat 31537 for further information.

Food firm lays off 32 workers
(By Eamonn Wynne – Nationalist 27th Sept 2008)
Dawn Fresh Foods in Fethard, which laid off 32 temporary staff last Friday, has stated that the company will continue to seek ways of improving its competitive position and reducing operational costs in what was a difficult trading environment.
The lay-offs were followed by a report in a national newspaper on Wednesday that fears were growing for the future of 120 permanent staff at Dawn Fresh Foods, which makes soups, sauces and ready-made meals for the British and European markets.
The statement from company CEO Gerry Raftery said it regretted last week's lay-offs. Over the past few years it had been commonplace to have some lay-offs of temporary staff in the autumn. This was due primarily to the natural seasonal downturn in the company's food service business in the UK.
Since the majority of the company's exports are to the UK, they have been adversely affected by the weaker Sterling exchange rate against the Euro, and significantly higher input costs, the statement added.
Dawn Fresh Foods has been in production on the Killenaule Road, Fethard, since 1984. The company is part of the value added division of the Queally Group, Ireland's largest privately-owned agri-business.
