Hunting News
Last week was what might be called a week of mixed fortunes for Tipperary Foxhounds. Tuesday, from Mullinahone was a completely blank day, no fox to be found. Thursday at Hoare Abbey, huntsman and hounds did their almighty best in the prevailing gale-force winds and driving rain.

Hounds were busy all day but could do very little in the prevailing weather conditions. Drawing the Willow Beds in Fogarty’s, hounds found here, hunted back to Clonbrogan Sandpits where he got to ground. A brace were viewed leaving Clonbrogan before hounds arrived but were too long gone and had to be left. Teehan’s, Knockinglass and the old railway line were blank. Hounds found again on re-crossing the road.

They had a nice hunt from here with some stiff jumping. Running back almost to Knockinglass hounds swung left to the New Line which they crossed below Ms Sue Perry’s. They hunted strongly down to Grant’s where they checked. They were stopped here as they were heading for St. Johnstown, country soon to be hunted.

From Lahart’s Glen, while not the best for the large field out, hounds had an excellent hunt in cover. They fairly rattled their fox around this very heavy covert for thirty minutes but Charlie would just not leave and hounds were called off at 4pm.

From Ballinure on Sunday the Tipps had another fast run from above Knockforla. Running through Fogarty’s they swung left-handed crossing the Silverfort – Moyglass Road down to the rear of the Mushroom Farm where he got to ground.

They finished the day with a hunt from O’Dwyers’s Burnchurch and with a circle from Hassett’s to the quarry where their fox found refuge in a cleft in the rockface.

With the White Heathers
Very poor scenting conditions were the order of the day for the Ballyluskey White Heathers at Loughcopple on Sunday. First fox from Morgan’s ran just a short distance and to ground. College was blank, Blackthorns across the road held a brace, hounds split on these. One lot hunted slowly to Slattery’s where they lost him, these hounds returned, joined the other lot which had hunted back towards the meet.

The united pack hunted again slowly back to Slattery’s and lost him. Hunting from Rathcanty, electric fencing finished a run here. Drawing up the railway line towards Monroe GAA Park they found here, crossing the road to Fortwilliam they found again. Scent had deteriorated very much as the afternoon wore on and hounds could just not hold the line. Home was blown at 3.30pm.

The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next November 21, at Clonacody, November 28, with a Lawn Meet at The Rectory, Fethard and on Sunday December 5, at Ballyluskey. Winners in the November draw were 1st: €200 – Ms Ann Dunne, Milestone, and 2nd: €100 – Paddy Power, Tullacussane.

Funding Badly Needed for Acorn Childcare
South Tipperary T.D. Tom Hayes has called on the Minister for Children, Barry Andrews to allocate funding to Acorn Childcare in Fethard.

“I am calling on Minister Barry Andrews to allocate money to the Acorn Childcare facility. The facility is full to capacity, with children receiving excellent childcare. However, the facilities are not good enough in the Health Centre.”

“The facility was approved for by the Department for improved facilities in the past, but has not yet received funding. The staff of the playgroup, the attention to the children and their environment is second to none. But this playgroup needs the government to match the commitment made to it, and allocate the funding it needs to get a new facility.”

“The children need a ground-floor facility with a play area, to be able to play outside. I have raised this issue with the Minister for Children, Barry Andrews and I will continue to push for this funding to be allocated to Acorn Childcare as a priority.”

Fethard Rugby Club
Last Sunday our minis had a well deserved rest and will be fit and raring to go this Sunday.

Like a wave crashing on the shore is how the Under-9 boys from Fethard broke upon Dungarvan recently. Within two minutes they were two tries in front but were by no means finished. Gallantly the west Waterford crew came back but the lads were merciless.  When Dungarvan probed they were met with rugged tackling best exemplified by the hardy Angus McDonald. Ian Harrington and his good friend Mark combined well with great passing and pace to torment their foes. Jack Hassett created great space in tight areas to push Fethard further on. Matthew Gleeson showed bravery in defence as well as speed in attack.

Dungarvan though had their moments and one quick burst seemed certain to score but for a blistering tackle into touch by Eoin Walsh. The great thing to admire in these boys is their ability to combine neat short pop passing and running with an ability to gain hard yards. Matt Burke was in the thick of it and carried ball and man well all day, with Richard Robinson always on hand to clear rucks quickly the scoring kept coming. With the final whistle came smiles all round for a job well done by the victorious boys of Fethard & District.

Fethard J2s travelled to Mitchelstown on Sunday evening to play a friendly. Mitchelstown another new club like ourselves in just their second year at adult level provided strong opposition in what was a very evenly contested game.

Fethard attacked strongly from the start but good defence from the home side held Fethard out for the first 20 minutes until Fethard were awarded a scrum in the Mitchelstown 22 from which No. 8, Paul Ronan, crashed over for a fine try. Declan Doyle narrowly missed the conversion.

The home team never gave up and took the game to Fethard for the first 15 minutes of the second half and were unlucky not to cross for a try. However, they did score a penalty, which left the score at 5-3 with 20 minutes remaining. The game flowed from end to end and Mitchelstown should have scored when they just knocked on with the line at their mercy.

Fethard continued to spread the ball wide and some great runs from Mush Dwyer, Nicko Hynes, Cian Moloney and Emmet Sheridan saw Shane Kavanagh stopped just short of the line. A few rucks later Cathal Gorey broke the defence to score a fine try, which Declan Doyle converted.

Nigel O'Connell, Paul Scully, Martin Murphy and Alan O'Connor had fine games. Our thanks to Mitchelstown for their warm hospitality on the day, and we look forward to having them up pre-Christmas when our new clubhouse will be in full use. We have Galbally at home next week in the Gleeson League at 2.30pm on Sunday, to be confirmed.
