FETHARD NOTES ARCHIVE

Saturday 29th July 2000

GAA CLUB NOTES
On Friday night, 4th August, our senior footballers will play Arravale Rovers in Cashel at 7.30pm.
Our intermediate hurling match scheduled for last weekend against Cahir was cancelled. No fixtures as yet.

GAA LOTTO
We had no jackpot winner or no 'match 3' winners this week. Five tickets were drawn with each of the following receiving £20: Dick Fitzgerald, John Paul Looby, Monica Ahearn, Kay Williams and Claire Hall. Please continue your support. Next weeks jackpot is £700.

MUNSTER VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS
The Fethard Girls under 16 Volleyball Team won the coveted trip to Mosney for the National Community Games Finals when they retained their Munster title in a fabulous game against Lismore County Waterford in Clonmel last Wednesday.
A packed hall at Presentation Convent saw one of the most exciting finals in many a year which was reflected in the close scoring. Fethard took the first set - 16/14 then a very fine Lismore team got into full stride and 'walked' the second set 15/6.
Everything depended on the third set and the third set had everything. Lismore went ahead from the very beginning and led to the final seconds, they lead 13/9 at one stage and even served for the match at 14/12. Fethard survived this match point and then served four straight winners for a victory made all the sweeter by the quality of the opposition. Lismore were indeed a very good team and the Fethard girls had to dig deep to contain them.
The girls who certainly did their Parish proud and now go to Mosney in September are: Sarah Healy, The Green; Sarah Stanbridge, Knockelly; Evelyn Fogarty, Brookhill; Kelly Ann Nevin, Ballintemple; Mary Gorey, Main Street; Zoe Cooney, The Square; Helen Frewen, Tullamaine; Evelyn O’Connor, St. Patrick’s Place; Ailish O’Connell, Coolmoyne; Aisling McCormack John, Cashel Road; Miriam Carroll, Menlo; and Vanessa O’Donnell (Captain) Monroe
Great credit is due to the Coach of the Team, Bernie O’Connor P.E. Teacher who drove from Kilkenny to train the team, her dedicated efforts are certainly appreciated by all.

SAFE DRIVING
A local motorist with an over 40 years safe driving record is of the opinion that the recent 'Speed Kills' safe driving campaign on the national media was a wasted effort. On a 50 mile there and back journey on our main highway last Sunday, he says, the speed of modern day traffic is unreal. Maintaining a steady 60 mph and driving within the speed limit, he overtook no vehicle on the outward journey and overtook two on the return journey. Passed by hundreds of vehicles of all kinds, he reckons most of them were been driven at speeds in excess of 80 mph. Why ordinary law abiding citizens should want to drive at tis speed is beyond understanding. One thing is certain however, while they continue to do so, we will continue to pay a terrible price.

SOCCER BLITZ
One of the most popular sporting events for local juveniles takes place in Killusty on the August Bank Holiday, Monday 7th, when Killusty F.C. promote their annual soccer blitz tournament for under 14 year old teams. Enrolment takes place in the club dressing rooms between 10am and 11am on the morning of the games. Boys and girls are eligible. Teams will then be drawn before play commences. Upwards of 40 teams usually take part in this competition and the method of drawing teams ensures that all have a fair chance of success. Who knows, perhaps this years competition will disclose another Robbie Keane.
