Saturday 12th September 1998

Congratulations to Fethard competitors who competed at the national finals of the Credit Union Community Games at Mosney over the past two weekends. In the Judo event Roy Gorey, Redcity, won a gold medal and Richard Gorey, Moanbeg, won a silver medal. Eoin Sullivan, Barrettstown, and John Noonan, St. Patrick's Place, put in a good performance in athletics, while Cathal Maher, Dun Aoibhinn, did well in art. Alan O'Connor, St. Patrick's Place, had a wonderful entry in the model making event.

Fethard's Tara O'Donnell, current champion lady jockey on the Irish horse and pony racing circuit, was the star of the Caherciveen races in county Kerry on Sunday last. Tara won the open horse race on "Eileen's Pet" riding a superb race on her fathers mare which was third in the Dingle Derby. She followed this with a win in the one-mile confined on “Freddie” and completed her three-timer on “Letter Lady” in the pony race. This performance almost assures Tara of a third champion lady rider title as she had a weekend to remember winning on “Zanussi Belle” at Lisdoonvarna the previous evening. This winner from the leading Northern stable of Eugene Gillen landed a huge gamble in the big race on the card being backed from 6-1 to even-money favourite.
Another very promising young Fethard rider Shane Walsh gave a very competent performance when winning the one-and-half mile open horse race on “Beat for Power" at Lisdoonvarna.

A Coffee Day from 9am to 6pm will be held in the Country Markets premises on Main Street on this Thursday 17 September. Please come along for a 'cuppa' and support this promotion in aid of the Tipperary Hospice.

Tipperary South Riding County Council is concerned about the manner in which some irresponsible people are using the re-cycling facilities in Fethard. Recently a considerable degree of litter has built up at this site. Persons are reminded that these facilities are provided for glass and drink cans and only these items should be placed in the facilities provided. Empty boxes and other litter should not be left at the site. The Council will prosecute persons found dumping in this manner. Our objective is to work with you to make South Tipperary a clean, well presented litter free
