Friday 27th October, heralded the arrival of Awards Day for Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School a day in which achievements both great and small, in the academic world, sporting, prowess, attendance, business, art, personal skills and social skills are acknowledged in a very special way. In the early afternoon mass was celebrated by Fr. Tom Breen P.P., assisted by Canon Jim Power. To all assembled Principal, staff, ancillary staff, representatives of the Board of Management and Parents’ Association, friends, parents and most important of all, our student body, it was a memorable occasion. The choir was accompanied by Kevin Hickey, with soloists Laura Rice and Aisling Dwyer, and a very welcome and appreciated instrumental on guitars was played by four young 1st Years, Noel O’Brien, Ted Barrett, Tony Myler and Garreth Lawrence.
Our guest for 2006 was Billy Slattery, formerly from Drumdeel, a past-pupil who has travelled much of the world in his career since leaving us some twenty odd years ago. He spoke of the value of achievement, no matter how small, and encouraged the student body to source and enjoy a career in which they would find happiness. He spoke of how the new school had developed since his days spent with us, and how luck the present generation were to have such excellent facilities, particularly the refurbished science block in its present ‘state-of-the-art’ structure. The Principal, Mr Ernan Britton, addressed the assembly. He thanked all who had helped in any way with Awards Day, particularly the team of Mr Michael O’Gorman, Mr Richard Prendergast and Mr Denis Burke for organising the event. To Mrs Margaret Prendergast and Mrs Marian Gilpin for their respective contribution of the lovely altar and the rehearsals for the choir. He thanked Kevin Hickey for his musical contribution, Fr Breen and Canon Power for the Liturgy, the readers, Connie Sullivan for his hard work in preparing the hall, and the very valuable asset of a dedicated staff. Mr Britton particularly thanked the parents, the Parents’ Association, and all members of staff who had worked so hard to make the Golf Classic of May 2006 such a huge success. Without their diligence and hard work, and without the support of the community, we would not have the beautiful science labs we have today. Me Britton paid special tribute to the achievement of our maths students of last year’s Leaving Cert who came third in the finals of Ireland's Team Maths competition held in Trinity College on 4th March a huge success for both them and their teacher Ms Lysaght. Our volleyball teams also did us proud by winning two all-Irelands under the coaching of Ms Bernie O’Connor and Mr Denis Burke. They also achieved silver and bronze in Mosney.
