Pat’s Tavern by Thomas J. CranePeople said that they were going through officer training at the University of Chicago, but since Enrico Fermi was constructing the first atomic reactor a few blocks away, I believe they were there for another reason because there was also an armory close by. During the Second World War, as an eleven year old, I served as part of a fire brigade under a First World War Veteran by the name of Bill. He had sand in buckets and stores of canned goods in a room in the basement of our apartment building along with steel helmets.
