Pat’s Tavern by Thomas J. CraneWorking For My Father At His Filling StationWhen I was working with my father in the filling station, he was putting in 10 and 12 hour days. I asked him why he was working so hard and he replied, “I guess that I got it backwards. Most people work hard when they are young in order that they can relax when the are old. I had my good times when I was young and now I am working hard to make up for it.”Another time my father told me that he always wished that he had a job sitting down. He got a job working at the casino where he sat down and got up every once and awhile to answer the door whenever someone knocked. What my father did was lift the little door that opens to see who was there before the heavy metal door was opened. He said that he did this for so long, that he began to wish for a job laying down. “So Tom,” he said, “it just goes to show that whatever you wish for and get, you are never happy.”103
