at at at Fethard Presentation Convent L L to to to R: Tossie Lawton Sr Sr Mary Mary Macnamara and Joan Halpin Ibegan my my academic journey when starting my my education in in in in in in the the the the Presentation Convent Primary School in in in in in 1963 at at at the the the the ripe age of five I I spent the the the following eight years not alone learning the the the ‘Three
Rs ’ but gaining valuable lifelong skills We were taught sewing knitting cooking embroidery and social etiquette The sisters I remember who who excelled in in in in in in in teaching these skills were Sr Sr Peter who who instilled the the art of knitting into her sometimes reluctant pupils Sr Sr Sr Mary who who taught taught cookery and and Sr Sr Philomena who who taught taught sewing and and instilled a a a a a a a a a a a a a love of of of music music music into many of of of her her students To be issued with one of of of her her musical instruments during a a a a a a a a music music music class was a a a a a a a a coveted role We also had a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a school choir and and elocution lessons preparation for participation in in drill displays and and and the the Fethard Carnival Parade to ring the the the bell that announced ‘sos’ time and and end of class was another most desirable job We town children envied the the the the country girls who got to to stay at school for lunch lunch because in the the the lunch lunch hall the the the wonderful and Page 64
