4th class class then Sr Sr Peter in in in 5th and and Sr Sr Finbarr and and Mother Agatha shared 6th class class duties as as as as they taught students sitting for for the the the the the County Council scholarship exam in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a separate room This was before the the the introduction of free secondary education for all In addition to to these class class teachers Sr Sr Teresita taught taught Catechism and and and sewing to to to some of the the senior classes Sr Sr Assumpta taught taught knitting and and and we also learned to to patch and and and darn We had elocution lessons penmanship embroidery singing and and and and dancing dancing as as well as as preparing for concerts plays plays and and drill displays Mrs LeGere came from Limerick regularly to teach Irish dancing dancing ably assisted by Miss Helen O’Connell Students were entered for singing and and elocution exams individual and and group We also had cookery classes where we learned how to make tarts scones Irish stew and soda bread I also remember some nuns who were in the school but didn’t teach me me me - Sr Sr Redempta and and Sister Marie Stella Sr Sr Raphael taught music to many students both boys and and and girls over the the years as did Mother Agatha and Sr Finbarr In these years the the the the the nuns also also organised entries in in in the the the the the town carnival making many of of the the the the the costumes and and scenery They also also held sales sales of of work and and and jumble sales sales in in the the the convent hall The The vestments made by by by the the the the Altar Society and and overseen by by by Sr Sr Peter Peter were displayed at the the the the sales of of work Sr Sr Peter Peter also raised money for the the the the missions by by by organising the the the collection of of wastepaper and silver paper paper Secondary School 1966-1971
With the introduction of of free education in in in in in secondary schools in in in in in 1967 increasing numbers of of of students meant it it was sometimes difficult to staff schools and some some of of the the nuns nuns taught taught several subjects Among the the nuns nuns I I I remember are Sr Sr Annunciata who taught taught taught Maths and and and and also Irish Irish Irish and and and and Commerce Sr Sr Sr Sr Cabrini taught taught taught taught Irish Irish Irish History and and and and Maths Sr Sr Sr Agnes taught taught taught taught French and and and and and Irish Irish Irish Irish Sr Sr Sr Clare taught taught taught taught Domestic Science Mother Alphonsus taught taught taught taught English Irish Irish Geography Geography and and History Sr Christine taught taught Geography Around this time time the the first lay teachers to to to teach teach in in in my time time arrived in in the the school Miss Moira Cotter (History) Mrs Mrs O’Reilly (Irish) Mrs Mrs Page 25
