Rev P P P Corcoran P P P P P P Morpeth Australia who was a a a a a a a a a a a native of of of Fethard gave the the the the community a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a life-size statue of of of the the the the Sacred Heart Canon Cantwell bequeathed the the the the the the sum of of of of £500 in in in 1917 to to be be invested and and the the the the the interest applied to to the the the the the provision of of o money prizes for for for the the the children for for for proficiency on on on Christian doctrine and and for for for regular attendance Miscellaneous Reminiscences of the Presentation Sisters Fethard (Margaret Prendergast)
On discovering an old French text book belonging to to my my late mother Margaret Walsh (née Slattery) I was prompted to to recall some of of my memories of of the the Presentation Sisters in Fethard The text book is is is is entitled ‘Picture Paths to French’ and published by Browne & Nolan Ltd in in 1921 On the the the inside frontispiece my mother had handwritten her her her name her her her school and and most importantly the the the the date on which she began using the the the the book: September 18 1923 My mother was 15 years old at at the the the time Obviously French was being taught in in Fethard Secondary School 100 years ago!
Under the the the guidance of the the the Presentation Sisters my mother became quite proficient in her her knowledge of of of English poetry and often quoted from memory poems which she had studied in in school I recall being frequently treated to her her rendition (by heart) of of her her favourite poem poem ‘The Lady of of Shalott’ (Tennyson) Tennyson’s poems were obviously studied in great detail at at at that time as witnessed by Page 17
