KILLUSTY PONY SHOW 2003

Saturday the 5th July. 2003

Saturday the 5th July. the day of the fortieth Killusty Pony Show dawned clear and cool. The field at Claremore was in readiness and entrants were expected from the four corners of Ireland. A massive entry of 220 ponies were on their way to do baffle for the ultimate accolade of Killusty Champion. Expected too, to celebrate their achievements on our behalf were eight members of the Special Olympics Equestrian Squad. Ten a.m. saw the battles begin. It was unusual to see all the judges in summer finery with straw hats being the order of the day.

The A.I.B. Slievenamon Championship judged by Tom Robinson, the Chairman of the Irish Pony Society, the first Championship of the day in the in-hand ring went to Kerry when Tim Hurley's lovely yearling, Blennerville Paddy, franked the form he had been showing all season. Nesta FitzGerald's Brandon Wayward Angel was a worthy Reserve Champion. Derek Daly & Nesta FitzGerald's Clonross Zinfandel was the best filly and Thomas Griffin's Dan was the best local in this Championship. Sarah Condell was unable to attend but her Seaholm Delight represented her admirably to take the Mile stown Mills Broodmare Championship and the Gus Keane Cup back to Roscrea from Michael Hourigan' s Ahane Sue. Seaholm Delight was then just pipped for the Welsh Championship by Philippa ManserghWallace's Night Shadow. Anne Stanley's Hilltop Festy who had won the Connemara Working Hunter in style made an unusual appearance in the in-hand ring to be Lady Hemphill's Butler Connemara Champion with Mrs. C. Poole's Shroughan Nikki from Wexford in reserve.

At the same time in the Ridden ring the Coolmore Stud Killusty Championship was being hard fought and won by Mrs. Regina Daly of Cork's Hayne Valley Pierre with Mrs. Bernie Leadon-Bolger's Brookvale Snowy River from Wicklow in reserve. Thankfully the decline in ridden show ponies seems to have stabilised for this year at least. There is certainly no shortagew of interest in sidesaddle as ten young contestants lined-out to contest the E.J.O'Grady Silver salver with Basil Brindley's Chantilly Phantom topping the lists and Limerick's Mary Blennerhassett's Moonlight Saunter next in line. The equitation riding classes for the Tate Croome-Carroll Memorial Equitation Cup threw up a worthy winner in Nicola Henry with Emma Kavanagh in reserve.

In Ring 3 where the stars of the future were learning the ropes, the local handy pony class was won by Sean O'Gorman's Megan with Olivia Holohan's Boolagh Ratnan in second place. The Special lead rein class was won by another local when Ben Murray on Cindy topped the line followed by Mrs. Thomas Ronan' s Melody. The winners and second placed prizewinners of four different classes fought out the Mini Championship, with Marie Gleeson's Lechlade Mayflower taking the honours and Nesta FitzGerald and Joanne O'Dwyer' s Larchgrove June in reserve.

The Show Hunter Ring commenced at 10:30 and at the end of the morning Basil Brindley's Chantilly Phantom had emerged victorious in the Tara Bncknell Open Show Hunter Championship for the Drew Gilpin Cup with Suzanne Garrigan's Jenny's Star returning to her first home from Co. Dublin to be reserve. In the afternoon, the Novice Show Hunters went through their paces and Limerick finished very much to the fore with Joanne Rocca's Thorndale Mischief taking the coveted Lady Lloyd-Webber Championship from fellow County man Tony Purcell and Ann Moran's Deerfield Jammy Dodger. The day finished in this ring with the Intermediate Championship. Jenny Shannon who had shown Sarah Condell' s Seahoim Delight collected in her own right with Newstown Phoebe with Hello Foxy in reserve for Tim and Laura O'Brien

Since Killusty staged the first working hunter class to be held at a Show in this country some thirty years ago, the working hunter division has become arguably the most popular of all the disciplines. There were massive entries at Killusty with two rings in operation all day with courses beautifully designed and maintained by Tony Ennis. The novice working hunters tried out the course in the morning and at the finish Phyllis Jones Grange Dolly Sparrow had prevailed over Catherine Rawluk' s Littlejon for the Gain Novice Working Hunter Championship. The Starter Stakes Championship was then judged in this ring with Liam Lynch's Piliheath Strongbow the Working Starter Stakes winner prevailing over Elizabeth Freeman's Ridden Starter Stakes winner Moelgarnedd Dymuniad for the award. The standard in the Open Working Hunters was very high with Suzanne Grrigan' s Inspector Morse taking home the Captain Curtin Cup and the Clonmel Oil cheque from Anne Stanley's Connemara Champion Hilltop Festy.

In the second working hunter ring the Performance classes were going ahead with Suzanne Garrigan' s Inspector Morse prevailing again over Rachael Touzel' s Bay of Clouds for the Championship. The green working hunter Class designed to initiate novice horses and/or novice riders to the Working Hunter ring was well supported with Olivia Holohan's Shangan Chrystal Boy winning from Annette O'Callaghan's Coolmore Slipper. The equitation jumping classes then took place in this ring. In these classes the rider is judged and not the pony giving other young riders an opportunity to show their ability. Emma O'Dwyer, Dearbhla Dempsey, Megan Delaney and Peter O'Donnell came out winners in their respective classes and were a credit to their instructors.

After lunch, our Special Olympic guests who had been presented with rosettes in appreciation of their efforts on our behalf at the Special Olympics, happily posed for photos and autographed a tee shirt which was presented to the best competitor from the Parish of Fethard and Killusty in the Local Handy Pony Class, Seamus Holohan. Not content to bask in the glow of their achievements, they cheerfully helped to set up the Dog Show Obstacle course and cheered the dog competitors on.

After forty years, Killusty Show Committee had many people to thank and had issued an invitation to lunch to all past officers and judges. It was a treat to welcome many old friends back to the Show and have a chance to reminisce about the good old days. The Show has changed over the years as new classes were added and general numbers forced a change of venue but the unspoilt nature of the Show remains with a beautiful field under Slievenamon being transformed annually for a day to celebrate the pony. It could not happen without the volunteers who turn out in numbers to set up the field and, indeed to take it down again. The gatemen, car parking men, stewards, judges, sponsors, catering crew, Committee members and indeed, competitors who all make Killusty Pony Show the institution it is.

KILLUSTY PONY SHOW - DOG SHOW
While the Killusty Dog Show has not been an integral part of the Pony Show for anywhere near as long as forty years, it is a very important facet of the Show. With increased entries every year and enthusiastic participants in all classes, it has become as difficult to win a prize in the Dog Show as in the Pony Show proper. This year it was situated in a very prominent position in close proximity to the horseboxes which added to its appeal. Emily Croome-Graafland had put a lot of effort into making the Dog Obstacle Course a real test and a very colourful one at that. The Judges, Martin Davis and Peter Whyte Ward were most impressed with the quality, standard and indeed quantity of the entries. Mobarnane House very kindly sponsored the rosettes and Larry Kenny of the Centra Foodmarket, Fethard came up with the prizes in kind for all the canine participants.
