Mornings in Fethard are buzzing again with traffic and children making their way back to school after the summer holidays.

It was recently announced that Ireland set a new 113-year record last year recording the highest number of births since 1896, despite the clouds of recession. The same trend was certainly obvious in Fethard last week with the large number of Junior Infants starting school in our local Primary Schools. Both Killusty National School and Nano Nagle National School have experienced a significant increase in their numbers this year which augurs well for the future of our schools and community.

Fethard Traditional Community Day
Fethard Community Field will hold its inaugural ‘Field Day’ on Sunday next 13th September at 1.30pm. This non-expensive fun day is planned for all family members with many of the attractions being offered free of charge.

The various clubs involved in the community field are hopeful to put a major dent in the almost €11,000 running cost debt that hangs over the field. The admission charge is €5 per family/adult with all children free. All the fun of a traditional field day will be on offer, such as: Inter-pub Donkey Derby with Tote; Dog Show with three main classes - Best Puppy, Best Small Dog, Best Large Dog; Three Novelty Classes - The Waggiest Tail, Dog Judge would Take Home, Dog and Owner Race. Entry Fee is €5 for main classes and €3 for novelty classes. Cup and rosettes kindly sponsored by Moyglass Boarding Kennels.

We will also hold an Inter-Club Gaelic Football Blitz for Under-8s, 10s and 12s, managed by Fethard Juvenile GAA Club. Many neighbouring GAA clubs are participating. No entry fee.

You can play our ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ with lots of top class household items to win. We have a ‘Cake Competition and Sale’ for adult and child classes. Entry fee €1.

Other Attractions include a Monster Barbecue with cooks drawn from Fethard Rugby Club, Pony Rides, Bouncy Castle, and lots of novelty games etc. DJ Jack Kenny will provide background music while our local stars will play live on the day.

The control of traffic and parking and the collection of the entry fee will be managed by The Badgers Soccer Club. Anyone wishing to help on the day or organise some fun event or sideshow should contact Pat O'Donnell on 087 6256542.

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
Well done and congratulations to our U-14 hurling team who reached a south semifinal but were unfortunately well beaten by a much stronger and bigger Kilsheelan team. Our U-14s consist of a very young bunch of lads and a team to watch. Man of the match performances came from David Hayes, Ger Gorey and William Morgan but all the team gave a very spirited performance. Well done to their trainers and selectors.

Best of luck to the U-16s who will play-off against Ballingarry for a place in a south semifinal.

The Juvenile Club is very proud to be associated with the Fethard Community Field day when they host the inter-club Danaher Cup competition for U-8s only. This cup has been in the club for many years and was always a great day out for the juveniles. There will also be games for younger members. Looking forward to seeing you all there on Sunday 13th September.

The Juvenile Club’s Golf Classic and draw raised a grand total to date of a whopping €12,829. Again we send a heart felt thank you for everyone’s most generous donations and to the people and business of Fethard and surrounding areas that supported us so well. Go raibh míle maith agat.

Parents are asked to note the change of date, time and venue for our AGM. This will now be held on Thursday 24th September at 8pm in the Tirry Centre. This has been a very successful and fruitful year for the Juvenile Club and we urge parents to come along and continue to be part of the clubs future.

Fethard Rugby Club
Rugby training has now recommenced and continues each Friday night at 6:30pm for the minis. Eighty-three young people under-13 trained last Friday evening and this number will grow as GAA competitions come to a finale. Training for all other ages is at 8pm. Full panels also trained at under-15, 17 and 19. We await the return of our GAA stars to fill the under-21 panel.

The J3s had a very impressive work out with twenty participating. Last Friday was a great start to the season with in excess of 130 people learning the skills of rugby, getting fit and having great ‘craic’ into the bargain. All the teams from the under-8s up are expertly coached by at least three people, all of whom are qualified to train at their level.
Membership fees are now due, €30 for all members from under-21s down, €75 for J3 members and €50 for senior members. We ask that all fees be paid by Friday night 25th September.

GAA Lotto Jackpot won
The GAA €10,000 Lotto Jackpot was won this week. Congratulations to Martha Williams, Killusty, Fethard, on winning. Photographed at the presentation of cheque were L to R: Gus Fitzgerald, Jim Williams, Martha Williams, Nicky O'Shea, Denis O'Meara and Mary Godfrey.
Congratulations to Martha Williams, Killusty, Fethard, on winning. Photographed at the presentation of cheque were L to R: Gus Fitzgerald, Jim Williams, Martha Williams, Nicky O'Shea, Denis O'Meara and Mary Godfrey.

The GAA Lotto Jackpot of €10,000 was won last week by Martha Williams, Killusty, Fethard. We congratulate Martha on picking the lucky numbers: 9, 13, 20 and 27. The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Michael Sheehan, Killusty, Fethard.

This week’s €3,000 Jackpot was not won. The numbers drawn were 10, 14, 20 and 30. We had no match three winner so the following drawn tickets won €30 each: Kay Williams, Killusty, Fethard; Garreth Byrne, Claremore, Fethard; Michael Teehan Moyglass, Fethard; Alice Moloney, Red City, Fethard; and R. Kirby, c/o Merrys, Clonmel. The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Philip Butler, Main Street, Fethard. Thanks to Fethard Electrical for supplying the tickets.

With no game last weekend. We resume with Minor Hurling B semifinal against Knockmealdown Gaels on 8th September and the Intermediate Hurling semifinal against Carrick Davins at 6.30pm in Kilsheelan on Friday 11th September. The Junior Football A quarterfinal takes place in Kilsheelan on Sunday 13th September at 6.30pm against Carrick Davins, so we expect a busy weekend on the playing field.
