On Saturday night last, 25th April, at the Premier Hall in Thurles, Laura Rice from Brookhill beat the cream of the county to win the coveted ‘Tipp FM Premier Star’ award. Over the past few months Tipp FM held auditions in twenty-six secondary schools in the county in search for their ‘Premier Star’. Laura, representing the Patrician Presentation Secondary School, successfully came through the regional heats, singing her own songs on all occasions, and reached the final along with eighteen other top class acts. This was one of the biggest events of its kind ever run by any local radio station in Ireland.

Laura introduced her new song called ‘Four People’ and then stole the heart of the judges with her very original performance. The five judges, Sarah McCormack, representing Tipp FM; Mark Hickey, Premier Music, Clonmel; Fran O'Donnell, Limerick, former entertainment manager University Concert Hall; Denis Allen, singer songwriter; and Joe Gallagher, GAF Studios, New Inn; were very impressed with Laura’s song writing ability and her confidence on stage while performing.

Philip Donnelly entertained the crowd while the judging was taking place. Excitement mounted when the judges returned and awarded their ‘Special Award’ to Debbie Gleeson from the Ursuline Convent, Thurles, before announcing the overall ‘Premier Star’ winner, Laura Rice from the Patrician Presentation Secondary School in Fethard. To loud applause, Laura was presented with a beautiful Tipperary Crystal trophy, a cheque for €1,000 sponsored by Premier Music Clonmel, and a recording contract sponsored by GAF Studios in New Inn. Tipp FM will also give Laura’s song one months ‘priority playlist’ at their radio station.

What do you think of Europe?
Do you have an opinion about Ireland in relation to Europe? On anything? Have the powers that be robbed us of our National identity and turned us into “good Europeans”? Have they over or under regulated us? Could you care less? And why am I asking?
It’s because a reporter from the BBC will be calling to Fethard on Wednesday 6th May to get the opinions of Irish people prior to the European elections. She will be in McCarthy’s at around six o’clock that evening, so if you want to say something to her, come along. It will be broadcast on a number of BBC channels, as well as on their website and on the BBC World Service.

May Procession on Sunday 10th May
The annual May Procession takes place on Sunday evening, 10th May, leaving the Parish Church at 7pm for the Augustinian Abbey grounds. Please come along with your families and keep this local tradition alive. The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary in many cultures and is considered the season of the beginning of new life. This custom originated in Italy and spread widely during the nineteenth century, a century well-known for its monthly devotions (Heart of Jesus in June; Rosary in October).

Fethard GAA Club News
Our Intermediate Hurlers won their second South Championship game on Sunday last on a scoreline, Fethard 2-7, Moyle Rovers 0-7, played in Goatenbridge. Alan O’Connor and Eoin O’Connell very much to the fore in this game with Shane Walsh a tower of strength at centre back. Well done. The Fethard team: J.P. McGrath, John Leahy, Michael Aherne, Declan Doyle, Aiden Lonergan, Shane Walsh, Jamie McCormack, Johnny O’Halloran, Cian Maher, Alan O’Connor 0-1, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-6 (4F), Eoin O’Connell, Benny Hahessy, Eoin Doyle, and Tomás Keane 1-0. Subs were: Alan Burke 1-0, James Kelly, Miceál Spillane and Dean Tobin.

Congratulations to Paul Fitzgerald and Brian Coen who both played a major part in Tipp’s senior football success in Longford at the Division Three football final, when in extra time, they beat Down with a single point to spare. This has been a unique National Football League with Kerry winners of Div 1; Cork winners of Div 2 and Tipp winners of Div 3, all from Munster. The last meeting against Down in a league semifinal was 1973 when Tipperary lost by one point.

In upcoming fixtures we see Fethard play Mullinahone in South Senior Football on next Monday in O’Sullivan Park, Ballingarry, at 6.30pm. The Minor Football team are out this Saturday 2nd May at 2.30pm against Commercials and also out on 7th May against Ballingarry at 7.15pm (venue not known as we go to press).

The County Board Draw will shortly be in full swing with first prize of a Audi A6 car or €50,000. A VW Polo is also a prize in the first draw. Tickets are €100 or €10 a month, please contact any club promoter. Promoters will also be calling door to door in the near future.

Our Lotto Jackpot €10,000 was not won. The numbers drawn were 9. 16, 26 and 27. We had no match three winner so the following tickets won €30 each: Fran Dillon (Tullamaine Fethard), Kaci Condon (Merrys Clonmel), Siobhan Meagher (Baptistgrange, Lisronagh), Rita Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Craig Barry (Merrys Clonmel). Thanks to AIB for providing the tickets.

Jack’s done it again!
Jack ConnollyLess than one week after winning his first All-Ireland title, Jack Connolly, The Green, Fethard, was back in the ring again. This time it was in the Curracloe Hotel, Curracloe, Co. Wexford, for the Ballagh Boxing Clubs annual tournament.

Jack was up against the much fancied Martin Storey (Jnr), a son of the famous Wexford hurler. Well if his father taught him how to hurl, Jack most certainly taught him how to box. Jack fighting on home opposition put on a fine display on how things should be done in the ring. Jack also went on to win ‘boxer of the tournament’ on the night, from a total of 13 fights.

Next up for Jack, it’s back to the National Stadium, Dublin this May bank holiday weekend to compete for the Cadets. The Cadets is Jack’s stepping stone to compete in International and European Competitions. Again Jack well done and best wishes in the Cadets. Watch this space folks.

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
It has been another busy week in the Juvenile Club with matches played at all levels and some with better results than others
The Under-12s are now out of their championship bid with a loss at home to Ballingarry last week. This was a very young team and although the scoreline did not reflect the heart and effort these young lads put into each match they were not to be lucky this time. The club would like to wish Annie Prout a speedy recovery after her injury in last weekend’s match, get well soon Annie.

Our Under-14s they had a very convincing win over Ballylooby last week in the first round of the championship and are home to Kilsheelan on Thursday evening.

Under-16s had the most thrilling game of the season so far when they played away to Kilsheelan on Monday evening of last week. They were down at half time and came back with determination and heart to win. It was a brilliant, skilful game of football and made our spectators proud to be from Fethard. They are now at home to Moyle Rovers. Best of luck!

Well done to Dylan Fitzgerald and Cathal Hurley who represented their club and South Tipp in an Under-15 hurling tournament on last Saturday.

Parents are reminded that some membership fees have not yet been paid. These fees, €10 per member, are needed for insurance purposes. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Under-10 training has now commenced and takes place every Friday evening at 7pm in the school field.

Juno and the Paycock
Juno and the Paycock Poster

Juno and the Paycock the latest production by the Fionn MacCumhaill Players will be staged on 15th 16th and 17th May in Cloneen. This Sean O’Casey classic is a play that has it all so if you would like a good night out get along to Cloneen Hall.

The play is set in 1922 in the aftermath of the 1916 rising when Ireland was in a bit of a recession (what’s new?). The play tells the story of the Boyle family and their ups and downs in life. Captain Boyle is the drunken layabout of a husband who claims he can’t work because of the pains in his legs which miraculously disappear when the pub opens and his buddy Joxer appears. His long-suffering wife Juno works all hours to keep the family together. This could be any family in Ireland at that time and this play caused riots in Dublin when first staged in 1922 because of the references to political themes. Tickets are €10 for all nights. Contact: 086-8871467 or 086-0834208.
