'Willie and the Poor Boys' on Stage at the Barbecue

The fundraiser for the Acorn Project to build a dedicated childcare centre in Fethard was an overwhelming success. A large crowd turned up in McCarthy’s Hotel on the bank holiday Sunday for the barbecue, which was blessed with a dry summer’s night. The crowd were entertained on the night by a rocking ‘Willy and the Poor Boys’ and by the dancers who were strutting their stuff at the end of the night.

Thanks to South East Scaffolding for building the stage for the night, to Brian from Kellett’s for organizing the food, to Joe Kenny for the publicity, to Premier Music in Clonmel for the lights and to all of those who helped make the night a success. The organizers would like to thank all of those who bought tickets from the committee and turned up to support the night.

Lord Lonergan does it again!
‘Lord Lonergan’ lived up to expectations on Monday night, 2nd June, in Youghal where he won the Track Supporters Club Stakes worth €1,600 by almost ten lengths. Following a pile up at the first bend, ‘Lord Lonergan’ was lucky to break away and win in a time 29.43. The drinks were flying again at Lonergan's Bar on Monday night for the owners and supporters. His next outing is at Clonmel Track on Sunday next.

Emergency Services Sponsored Cycle
The emergency services of South Tipperary have come together for the first time to hold a fundraising cycle on Saturday 21st June. Each year a different charity will benefit from funds raised. This year’s charity is South Tipperary Autism School Fund. The cycle is a fun cycle and not a race and consists of a 13 mile cycle from Carrick-on-Suir to Clonmel, and for those who want a challenge, a 65 mile cycle starting in Clonmel and passing through Dungarvan, Carrick-on-Suir and finishing at Kickham Barracks Clonmel where all the participants will be treated to a BBQ.

The Fethard cycling club are looking for ladies and gents to participate in the cycle. Training takes place every Tuesday night at 7pm from the car park in Fethard (except for Tuesday 10th June meeting in Tesco car park Clonmel to meet other participating cyclists).

To get involved please contact Noel Blake 086-8586456 or Janette Blake 087-2281900.

The Man from Mayo
Vincent Doocey
Staff members at Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School photographed with Vincent Doocey and family on the occasion of his retirement from teaching. Back L to R: Fr. Front L to R: Fr. Gerry Horan, Ernan Britton, Margaret Doocey, Vincent Doocey, Marian Gilpin and Aine Doocey.

On the seventh of September 1970, from under the shadow of Nephin Mor in the county of Mayo, Vincent Doocey walked into our lives, and our Patrician Brothers Secondary School, to teach Woodwork and Technology. Quiet spoken and deeply philosophic he has indelibly printed his demeanour and personality on all of whom he has had contact with since.

This year of 2008 sees Vincent retire from teaching, and it is with regret, and yet pleasant nostalgia, that we bid a fond farewell to him. Vincent first lived in the Convent Gate Lodge, and then moved to Abbey Road, where he now lives with his wife Margaret; the family grown up have flown the nest. Perhaps he will return to his stunning roots between mountain and sea, but wherever he goes we will always remember him.

Visit to Fethard by Fermoy-Ploemeur-Nowa Deba Group
A group of over sixty visitors was welcomed to Fethard on Friday 9th May 2008 where they enjoyed a very informative and interesting visit.

The group, who arrived in Fethard in the early afternoon (following a visit to the Rock of Cashel en route) came from Fermoy in County Cork. The visitors were not, however, all Fermoy people as the group included forty-two French and six Polish visitors. They were visiting Fethard as one of the tours organised by the Fermoy-Ploemeur-Nowa Deba Twinning Committee. Fermoy has been officially twinned with the Brittany town of Ploemeur since 1983, and the inclusion of Nowa Deba, Poland in 2005 completes the tripartite arrangement. The visitors arrive to Fermoy every alternate year, in May, to enjoy a week of cultural and social events. Fethard was selected as a destination for a one-day trip this year.

On arrival in Fethard, the first stop was McCarthy’s Hotel and Restaurant, where the travellers enjoyed a delicious lunch. The pub was of great interest to all the first time visitors and the stories of previous ghostly visitations on occasion only served to add to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the place.

Lunch was followed by a whistle-stop tour of medieval Fethard, time constraints allowing only for a brisk walk over Madam’s Bridge, access beside the Ballroom onto the Clashawley banks, down to the town walls, over to Watergate Bridge, a brief history lesson, a good look at the Sheela-na-Gig, which inspired great interest, and back to the bus which was parked at the GAA car-park.

The next stop on the itinerary was the world-famous Coolmore Stud. The visitors were each presented with a copy of the 2008 Coolmore book as a souvenir of their visit; and were accorded a very interesting and informative tour of the entire complex, mostly conducted through French, courtesy of Mathieu Alex, which delighted the group immensely. Everyone was more than impressed with Coolmore, and were awed by the extent, the efficiency and the sheer beauty of the farm and its hinterland.

The trip ended with the bus taking the group back through Fethard via Burke Street, so as to see the Abbey Church, and down Watergate and up the Valley as a last look at the town before departing for Fermoy, and afterwards to France and Poland.

Fethard looked wonderful as the sun graced us with its presence for the day and the new green growth of early summer was in evidence everywhere. With beautiful Slievenamon in the background, the town, its environs, Coolmore and the countryside looked at their very best and were much complimented and enjoyed by all the visitors, who we hope will visit Fethard again.
