Photographic Competition Winners

Winners of the senior and junior Fethard Town Walled Town Photographic Competition accepting their prizes of €500 and €200 respectfully from members of the Fethard Historical Society and Fethard Walled Town Committee who coordinated the competition in conjunction with the Heritage Council of Ireland. L to R: Terry Cunningham, Angelico Bano (Junior Section Winner), Dóirín Saurus, Laurence Kenny (Senior Section Winner and runner-up in the national competition) and Pat Looby.

There was a great response to the Fethard walled town photographic competition with over 120 entries. The Clonmel photographer, John Crowley, kindly took on the difficult task of choosing the winners. Larry Kenny won the adult section with his photograph entitled ‘Light on the Past’. This photograph of the wall by moonlight went on to become a runner up in the national competition organised by the Heritage Council. To celebrate, they are making it available in postcard format. The first prize in the under 18 section was won by Angelico Bano, a pupil of Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School, with her photograph, ‘Incrocio’ (Meeting Place). Four runners-up prizes went to Aisling Dwyer, Xuan Wyatt, Andrew Phelan and Katie Butler. All the prize-winning photographs can be seen in a window display at Pat Carroll's framing shop on Main Street, Fethard.

Thanks to all who entered. It is hoped to turn the competition into an annual event and with top prizes of €500 and €200 it might be worth keeping an eye on the wall for suitable photographic opportunities between now and next year's competition.

Fethard GAA News
On Sunday last 11th November the curtain came down on our playing year with the County Minor B football final replay played in Boherlahan and us coming out on the losing side. In a game that could have been saved with a little bit of luck, after missing a penalty and two very scorable frees in front of goal, the game finished on a scoreline, Fethard 0-8, Upperchurch 1-10. Overall Upperchurch/Drombane proved to be a well-balanced opposition in both size, power and football over the 120 minutes.

Our team was: J P McGrath, Gavin Fitzgerald, Cathal Gorey, Ciaran O’Connell, Thomas O’Connell, Christopher Sheehan 0-2 (1/45m), James Kelly, Declan Doyle Aaron Donovan 0-2, Dean Tobin, Eoin O’Connell 0-4 frees, Alan O’Connor 0-1, Ciaran Ryan, Adrian Lawrence and Johnny Fleming. Subs used were: Michael Fleming, Eoin Condon and Ciaran Ryan. Other subs: Ben Walsh, Daniel Hickey and Eoin Healy. To our selectors, thanks for the commitment to our players and thanks for the enjoyment. Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach.

Our lotto jackpot €7,500 was not won. The numbers drawn were 6, 15, 19 and 21. We had two match three winners of €75: Rita Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard), Margaret O’Donnell (Monroe. Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Chrissie O’Meara (Grove Road, Fethard). Thanks to Fethard Wholesale Electrical for supplying the tickets.

Bookings can also be made by ringing Colm, at 086 3502360. To all our absent Badgers, this note is for you too. ‘Kerstin’ 1958 Gold Cup Winner
We received the following request from Margaret O'Doherty for information about the 1958 Gold Cup winner ‘Kerstin’ bred in Fethard.

“Can you help? I know that a racehorse called ‘Kerstin’ was bred somewhere in your region and I am trying to trace anyone who knew of her or maybe had something to do with her. I am the daughter of the owner Harry Moore and this coming year (2008) will be the fiftieth anniversary of the mare wining the Cheltenham Gold Cup. I intend to be at Cheltenham to celebrate what I think was a great achievement for the North of England - Northern owner – Harry Moore; Northern trainer – Verly Bewicke; and Northern jockey – Stan Hayhurst. At the time I was a seventeen-year-old girl and I was not able to see the mare win the race but I vowed then that if I could I would be at the 50th Anniversary.

Well I will be there and hopefully I will be able to meet up with some people who knew of her origins. If you can put me in touch with the stud where she was born that would be wonderful. Many thanks. Margaret O'Doherty” (email: sandmod@talktalk.net).

Slievenamon Musical Society stages ‘My Fair Lady’

Holly Williamson who plays Eliza Doolittle in Slievenamon Music Society's production of 'My Fair Lady'.

The latest production by The Slievenamon Musical Society is starting to hot up as rehearsals are in their final stages and the nerves are starting to kick in. The production will be staged in Cloneen from 22nd November to 25th November.

My Fair Lady the story of a young cockney lass who is plucked from her familiar surroundings and placed in a middle class environment simply for a bet is one of the most loved stories told to us through music. Henry Higgins or should I say Professor Higgins believes he can change this ‘guttersnipe’ as he calls her from an annoying foul speaking creature to a lady. Will he succeed? Well, he has a huge task ahead of him and his challenge leaves this middle-aged man with mixed emotions for this young girl. His feelings take a turnabout, which leave him wondering what has happened until he realises life without her is not the same. A wonderful story; great songs; and a must see! Booking is now open at Tel: 087 7814290 or 087 3283074.

Members of Slievenamon Musical Society take a break from rehearsing their upcoming show "My Fair Lady" to present a cheque to Cuan Saor, part of the proceeds of their recent Fashion show held in Cloneen. "My Fair Lady" runs in Cloneen Hall on 22nd, 23rd, 24th & 25th November. Ticket enquiries to 052 31201.

Fethard Rugby Club
Our under eighteens scored a great away win, in beating Galbally by 12 points to 6. This victory was forged by our forwards who were very strong throughout, particularly effective were David Hall, Dick Walsh, Stephen Healan and Nigel O’Connell. Colin Blackmore and Willie Power were the try scorers and Shane Kavanagh was successful with one of the converts. Darragh Dwyer had a great debut game. This team can go all the way this season when the full panel becomes available.

Our under sixteen’s travelled to Waterpark and were beaten on a score line of 27 points to 19. Our lads settled the better and were rewarded with a well-taken try within 5 minutes, by Ciaran Power after he won the fall from a Waterpark lineout. Waterpark upped the intensity and scored 3 tries and a conversion before the break to leave the score 17 to 5. On the restart the Fethard lads fought back bravely with James Kavanagh, Sam Manton, Matt O’Sullivan and Colm Shanahan putting in the tackles and making the hard yards which gave the platform for our backs to show there attacking prowess with Aaron Conran, Alan Casey and Daniel Hickey being very effective. These attacks and strong forward play gave Ciaran Power a hat trick and Daniel Hickey converted to close the gap to 3 points. Fethard looked to be well on top at this stage with Joe Maher tackling with a ferocity that belies his years. Waterpark got a lucky breakaway try to finish the game. Best wishes to Sam Manton who retired with an eye injury.

Our under elevens travelled to Carrick and though they lost the game, this band of young rugby players did the club proud and showed great promise. Those to impress were Niall Prendergast, Jack Kennedy, Gerard Horan, Charlie Manton and Charlie Carroll.

Our under twelve’s also played Carrick and gave an exhibition of Munster style rugby, rucking and mauling their way to a very exciting draw. This was a game of the two packs and the Fethard pack scored two great tries through Jimmy Feehan and Shane Cleere. The Fethard lads also defended bravely with every player putting their bodies on the line to hold Carrick at bay time and again. Paul Butler and Ciaran O’Connell were particularly effective in defence.

Our under fourteen’s played Clanwilliam and fought back bravely to take the honours. The try scorers were William Croke, Keith Quirke, James Holohan and Colin Maher. Eoin Fennelly gave an exhibition of kicking in scoring all the coverts.

Congratulations to Matthew Fitzgerald, Ciaran Power and Shane Kavanagh on being selected for the under Seventeen Easter-Munster side, with Matthew and Ciaran also making the under sixteen Munster team. This is a great achievement by these young men and reflects very well on the club and the quality of coaching.  Well done to all.

With the White Heather Harriers
The Ballyluskey White Heathers, from Cloneen on Sunday, had a nice run from O’Donovan's Plantation. Following a good twenty minutes covert hunting they ran back to the Glen. Right-handed from here between O’Donovan's and the Cloneen Road they ran right again to Knockroe where they ran to ground in the covert. In the afternoon they ran from O’Halloran’s to the gorse at the Dublin Road side. Some nice covert hunting was enjoyed here where there were at least two brace of foxes on foot. Hounds meet next Sunday, 18th November, at Clonacody and on Sunday 25th November at Grove Gate, both at 11am.
