Josie’s husband, Bill, is a Londoner and both are very popular in the area. In 2000 they appeared on A BBC show and as a result of their success Josie had Rose named after her, “The Josie Whitney Rose”. They are frequent visitors to Killusty and Fethard and have a grand-daughter living in Carrick-on-Suir. Their family and friends in Killusty and Fethard wish them both many years of good health and happiness. Fethard Historical Society David and his wife, Judith, in response to a request from the Mayor of Tournan, very kindly re-arranged their Sunday schedule to come and meet us during our visit to that lovely medieval town. They have been living in the area for the past eight years and were able to afford us interesting insights into the French way of life and the reality of living abroad. Suffice to say that the French countryside suits them admirably and they have become part of the their local community. Their advice regarding making a success of any such undertaking is to learn the language something apparently which a surprising number of expatriates neglect to do! A heartfelt “merci bien” to David and Judith for their warm welcome to Tournan. Our time with them considerably enriched our experience there. Patrician Presentation Secondary School News Volleyball Awards Day Patrician Bicentenary TY Art/History Trip to Dublin It was a long day but a very worthwhile outing. First stop on this trip was the Hugh Lane Art Gallery with a comprehensive presentation of this Georgian Gallery and its collection of art. The highlight of the visit was the viewing of Francis Bacon’s art studio and the reality of “inspirational chaos”. Next on the tour was the National Museum where the emphasis was on our Celtic treasurers, the Fethard medieval statues and the bog bodies. After lunch in St. Stephens Green it was back to the bus for a visit to Collins Barracks where we viewed an exhibition on high crosses followed by a guided tour of the fashion exhibit, “The Way we Wore”, and a weaponry exhibition. Finally, for many of our pupils, the highlight of the day was the guided tour of Kilmainham Jail where they heard the history of the jail and visited the cells of famous people in Irish history. Business Trip The students travelled first to Gurtnafluer Business Park where they met with business owners, Mr and Mrs Peter Schaerer of the Label Factory and Mr Michael Lavin of the Transport Museum. Then, on to Carrigeen Business Park where they met business man, Mr Robert Jones of Vision ID. Finally they met with Mr Paddy O’Keeffe who gave them a tour of Tipperary Organic Ice Cream after which some tasting of the product was enjoyed. Insight into how each person set up their business, pitfalls, advertising, marketing etc., made the tour very interesting and will hopefully result in the encouragement of an entrepreneurial spirit among these young people. Killusty Soccer Fethard & District Juvenile Rugby Club Under 7 & 8 Mini Rugby have played matches against Cashel, Clonmel and Nenagh in the past two weeks and it has been wonderful to field a squad of 34 players for these. All three games were very tough and it was wonderful to see great improvement from this squad over the past two Sundays. With a large number of rugby debutants it made exciting and interesting viewing. There were plenty of tough tackles, improved passing and great try scoring from all teams. Here’s to an enjoyable season ahead and well done to the following; Jack Ward, Connor Black, Owen Delmacker, Richard Houlihan, Patrick Scully, Ciaran O’Dwyer, Danny Gleeson, Joe Carroll, Darragh Lynch, Joseph O’Connor, Gavin Ryan, Luke Bradstock, Ned Grogan, Lorcan Ivors, David Healey, Harry Butler, Aaron Smullen, Harry Cummins, Dale Murphy, Connor Pierson, William Pratt, Darragh Harcourt, Muirean O’Connell, Oliver Pearson, Tommy Morgan, Ross Mullins, Aaron Ryan, Jack Spillane, Andrew Moloney, Gavin Moloney, Frankie Maher, Mark Heffernan and Jack Dolan. The under 10s were victorious and had a great game. A great turn out was wonderful to see and the team provided excellent ball skills and great tackling shone through on the morning. Players to give a great performance on the day were Harry Tobin, Kerry Purtill, Christian Casey and Ben Murray. Our under 9s had a very hard fought game and came out on top 1-0 against Cashel. There was good play from the whole team and it would be unfair to single out any of the players this week. Keep up the great rugby. With a number of first timers the teaming are working well together and are showing improvement. Next the under 11s played Cashel and the scoring was, Fethard 5, Cashel 2. With two quick tries at the end coming, it made for great Rugby. Worth mentioning Cathal Mahoney and Jack Kennedy who played extremely as well as did Eoin Hurley. It was a very hard fought game with the two even sides providing great viewing. We had a few first time rugby players giving a great account of themselves and the made for a good day out. Moving up the Under 12s, we have a very good team this year and beat Cashel 5-1 with some excellent ball handling skills displayed amongst them. Players to shine were, Jimmy Feehan, Josh Murray and Paul Butler along with Robert Horan. Next week we play away in Nenagh in a ‘Mini Blitz’ for the under 8s, 10s & 12s. Kick off is 10.30am and cars will leave Fethard Ballroom at 9.15am. The under 14s played Roscrea and were victorious on a score 32-7. Jack McCarthy scored the opening try and we went to half time leading 5-0. We conceded an early try to go 7-5 behind and then we took over after that. Keith Guiry scored 3 tries on the trot. Declan Fanning and Willie Croke both got in for tries at the end. David Hayes kicked the only successful conversion of the day. A much bigger effort will be needed next week when we play Dungarvan at home on Sunday, time to be confirmed at training. Our under 16s travelled to Roscrea on Sunday and put in a great performance. Such was the standard of the rugby played by these young men that Eddie O’Sullivan, et al, need have no worries for the future of Irish Rugby. Our young men got off to a flying start with Robert Hall breaking through for our first try, which was duly converted by Daniel Hickey. Colm Shanahan and Matthew Fitzgerald were dominant among the forwards and scrapped for every ball, turning over great ball throughout. Our second try came from our scrum half Conor Kavanagh where passing and decision making continues to impress. Our third try came after a 30-metre break by Seanie Curran, before releasing Tim Donovan to cross the ball. Daniel again added the points. Our fourth try was a classic with our hacker Matt O’Sullivan moving out to create the extra man and release Aaron Conlon into the corner. Aaron’s attacking game continues to improve and he was rewarded with his 2nd and Fethard’s 5th try. Jack O’Connell scored Fethard’s 6th try and Daniel Hickey rounded off a great display with a well taken penalty this was the last action of the game to leave Fethard winners by 39 points to 19 for Nenagh. Their next game is at home against Thurles on Sunday. Time will be confirmed at training this week. Our under 18s did not have a game this week. They play at home Saturday evening at 5pm against Waterford City and the game will be finished in time for the world cup final.
