Exciting Summer Camp for Youths
There are still some places available on the Summer Camp being organised by Fethard Community Youth Project and Tipperary Regional Youth Services. This camp will cater for young people aged between 12 and 15 years and will take place during the last week of July (Tuesday 24th to Friday 27th) in the Sports Centre and other locations in Fethard.

The main focus of this summer camp will be the preparation of a Medieval-themed act. The organisers are delighted that staff from the Multimedia Department Tipperary Institute have offered their services to produce a DVD of the performance. Additional activities included in the programme for the week include creating and wearing medieval costumes, making and using medieval weaponry, writing scripts and re-enacting battles. And that’s only the ‘history’ bit! There’s also bowling, a fun-sports day, a treasure hunt, remote-control cars, a barbeque and more.

Application forms for this camp are available from the Community Office, Barrack Street and Newport’s Newsagents, Main Street. Closing date for completed forms is Friday 13th July.

Fethard GAA Club News

Liam Connolly RIP (4/7/07)
It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of one of Fethard’s finest Gaels, Liam Connolly. Liam spanned a playing career of 25 years with club and county from 1951 to 1976 as a dual player. No other person in the club won such honours in senior hurling — All Ireland 1958, 1961 and 1962 (sub). Liam also won Munster medals in 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962 Intermediate All Ireland and Munster Medals in 1966, and to finish won a Minor All Ireland title in 1953 with Munster in that grade in 1953 and 1954.

In football Liam wore the county senior jersey for 11 years with no break from 1956 to 1967 without success. He also represented his club at minor in 1954, a feat unrivalled by any other person in the Fethard club.

For his Fethard club Liam holds Senior County Football titles for 1954, 1957, when at age eighteen he won his first. He won South Senior Titles in 1954, 1955, 1957, 1969, 1976, spanning 22 years between his first and last, and also won Tipperary Man Cup Medals during that period.

Having had the privilege to win two South titles with him I can say Liam was a gentleman at all times with tremendous commitment and advice. In junior football he was a member of the Killusty 1956 South and County winning team. He holds a unique record as a Fethard youth when he won a South minor hurling and football title in 1952 with Fethard as a 16 year old, and another minor South football medal in 1951 as a 15 year old.

Hurling was his great love and he holds a South senior medal with Na Piarsaig 1957 and a Group B South title in 1956 with Padraigh Pearses. He was part of the Coolmoyne Junior A South winners of 1959, and later in life was honoured with a Hall of Fame in 1994, and a Cumann na Sean Ghael Award in 2006.

Liam will be sadly missed for his guidance on the field and his ability to read the game his presence will also be a void on the sideline. To his family we offer our sincere condolences at this time. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu.

In intermediate hurling we were defeated on Sunday 8th July in Kilsheelan on a scoreline, Carrick Davins 4-16, Fethard 1-12, with the Davins pulling away in the final quarter. The team was: Kieran Treacy 1-1 (frees), Richard Gorey, Michael Carroll, Niall Hayes, Christopher Sheehan, Michael Ryan, Jamie McCormack 0-1, John P Looby 0-2, John Leahy, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1 Stephen O’Donnell 0-1, Michael Ahearne, Cian Maher, Miceál Spillane, Kenneth O’Donnell 0-6f. Sub used was Connie Flynn. With four games played and three to go our next game is scheduled game is for weekending 22nd July against Cahir.

The Minor Hurling B second round was played last Monday 2nd July, also in Kilsheelan. This was a great game played in ideal conditions with Carrick Swans winning in the final two minutes on a scoreline, 3-12 to Fethard’s 2-12. The team was: Mathew Fitzgerald, Michael Fitzgerald (Red City), James Kelly, Kieran O’Connell, Tom O’Connell, Eoin O’Connell 0-1, Adrian Lawrence, Dean Tobin 0-7f, James O’Keefe, Aaron O’Donovan, Declan Doyle 1-2, Alan O’Connor, Kieran Ryan 1-1, Chris Sheehan 0-1f, and Jonathan Fleming. Our next game in this division is against Fr Sheehys.

Our Lotto Jackpot €5,700 was not won. We had one Match Three winner, Bernie Byrne (Claremore). The numbers drawn were 6, 8, 19 and 21. The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Noreen Maher (Abbeyville). Congratulations also to our County Board Winners €200 John Keane (Tullamore) on 29th June, and Eileen Maher (Dun Aoibhinn) on 6th July.

Foróige Citizenship Regional Event 2007

The after school group in Killenaule which was run by the Fethard Community Youth Project finished up after 4 weeks. Over the 4 weeks the group did a number of fun activities such as drama, art, games and learned how to make healthy snacks. The group was enjoyed by all and unfortunately could only run for a short period of time due to lack of funding for the continuation of the FCYP.

On Saturday 23rd June, members of the Fethard Community Youth Project /Scoil Ruain environment group went to Cork City for the Foróige Citizenship Regional Event. The event was organised by Foróige to award all clubs who had participated in Citizenship Projects around Munster.

The FCYP/Scoil Ruain project called ‘Us the Future’ in which the twelve members, all 1st years in the school, was based on improving the look of the old VEC building in Killenaule. The group decided the best way to do this was to plant flower boxes and hang flower baskets at the school. The aim of the project was for each member to learn how to actively participate in their own communities.

The group with their certificate of achievement at the Citizenship Event

Three members travelled to Cork for the event and to represent their group, overall it was a great opportunity for the group to get recognition for their hard work and dedication. The group were one of three groups that represented South Tipperary on the day, Clerihan Foróige Club and Carrick-on-Suir Neighbourhood Youth Project were also there. The day ended on a great high as the three groups joined forces to win digital cameras each at a quiz organised for the day. Well done lads!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and support throughout my time in Fethard and Killenaule. I had a fantastic seven months and hope that it will not be the last of the FCYP.

To everyone that participated in the groups and to everyone that I met and worked with as Youth Officer for the Project, I wish you all the best and thank you, Suzie O‘Shea (above left).
