Speaking of birds, there are two unusual feathered friends locally at the moment. We have a blackbird with a white head and neck and a most unusual jackdaw. This jackdaw has been with us at least four years and with every moult produces more white feathers. Now it looks more like a magpie than one of its own species. Fethard Open Coursing AGM A Parting Glass! Then they were off again. They had to find a bar in Cork before heading for Sligo and then back to Dublin to get to the three bars that were closed when they started their tour. We wish them well on their quest. Hope they remember some of it. Died Recently in England The Well Golf Society
McCarthy’s Hotel Golf Society Congratulations to the winners in Adare-Brian Higgins and John Hurley in the mens section, Bobbi Holohan and Anne Moloney in the women’s section (1st and 2nd respectively). The fourball matchplay competition is now up and running with first rounds to be completed by April 30th. The full list of rules and playing partners is now available in the Hotel. All those who entered should now check to see when they are playing. It is rumoured that one member of the society had a hole in one on the par 4 fifth hole in Slievenamon recently. Witnesses are thin on the ground, but it is believed that Annette was his playing partner on the day. The identification of this golfer isn’t certain, but information leaking from the course suggests that it may be the man in his late 50’s that was seen doing a victory lap of the golf course with a pint of ale in both hands screaming, “hole in one . . . birthday . . . April 5th . . . more beer . . . hole in one . . . vj . . . etc, etc”. It is rumoured that he is a beginner. Good luck to all in Gowran! Fethard Bridge Club On 19th April we played for prizes sponsored by Nora Lawrence and Madeleine O’Donnell. Results next week. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu. Shooting of Officers in Fethard 1921 A feeling of anxiety still prevails here following the shooting of the three military officers. The people are apprehensive. All business was voluntarily closed down on Wednesday as a mark of respect. On wednesay evening the following notice was posted outside the courthouse: “The Colonel Commanding directs that the shops and places of business (less the creameries) shall be closed from 6 o’clock am on June 23 to 6 o’clock am on June 24 as a mark of respect to the three officers murdered on Sunday last. This is in no way intented as a punihsment, as no such punishment would, of course, be adequate for such a foul deed. J.H. King, Major.” It was estimated on Tuesday morning that the considerable damage had been done by the smashing of plate glass windows in town. Barricades have been put up in a number of cases as a protection against any further outbreak. It is stated that considerably much more damage would have been done only for the promptitude with which the military patrol acted. Windows in the following establishments were smashed:- T. Donovan’s, publican, Main Street; Messers. Tierney’s Drapers; Mrs. McCarthy’s Hotel; Miss Tobin’s, draper; W.Heffernan’s, cycle mechanic; John Fitzgerald’s, saddler; the Convent Laundry windows; Brett’s Drapery establishment; Mrs. Fennelly’s; S. O’Brien drapery; Michael Hogan’s hardware; Edmd O'Shea, Burke Street; P. Flynn’s; P. Doolan’s; P. McCarthy’s; J. Morrissey’s; Mrs O’Shea’s; D. Triprook’s; MacKenzie and Skehan’s. Practically all the windows in Quirke’s Hotel and the windows of the Town Hall were damaged, and a couple of panes of glass in the parish priest’s house (Rev. Father Ryan) were smashed. On Tuesday morning an inventory of the damage was taken by an officer. Since the shootings took place the town is patrolled at night and the inhabitants are obliged to be indoors by 11 o’clock. It is stated that Messers. P.J. Henehan and P. Flynn, members of the South Riding County Council, were ordered to leave the town during the week. On Wednesday their families left the district also. During the week a number of loiterers were commandeered to pack up the furniture of the late Crosbie Boyle, whose dead body, pierced with several bullets, was recently found lying on the roadside, in the Killusty district. Fethard Athletic Club On a separate note, a belated congratulations to Hannah Trehy for her success in both the Munster and All-Ireland Indoor competitions. Hannah won one silver medal (hurdles) and two bronze medals (long jump and high jump) in the Munsters. She went on to win a silver medal in the hurdles at the All Irelands. This is a wonderful achievement for this great all round athlete and well deserved as she trained hard all over the winter months. Well done Hannah. A reminder to all that training continues every Monday and Wednesday in the Community Field from 6.30 to 7.30. All children age 7 (or approaching 7th birthday) and upwards welcome . For those who have not yet paid, the yearly registration fee is now due (€20). Fethard Ladies Football Racing Success for neighbouring families Shane Walsh, from Knockbrack who is currently enjoying a good season in England rode a 33/1 winner last weekend for Ken Clutterbuck and had a second for the same trainer on Easter Monday. Shane has ridden 19 winners this season and has 30 winners overall since he moved to England. Well done to all! Ladies Rugby Fethard Historical Society Fethard & Killusty Burial Grounds Records |
